      I had one of those "growing up" Skipper dolls as a kid and I loved her. Maybe I was oblivious, but I really don't remember much to do made about it at the time, but I do remember that eventually they added a little sister and Skipper became a younger teen sister.

      I don’t either. I made some of my Barbie’s as rich and upscale. I also made all my blonde and Caucasian Barbies as Southern Belles! So much fun. But Midge is my favorite. And having a woman have a baby is so sweet and should be seeing as normal. Women get pregnant and give birth.

    • @niabelizaire3596
      @niabelizaire3596 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      @gbear2253 It’s the same thing with Growing Up Skipper. Both puberty and pregnancy are crucial stages in life and are a part of the human cycle. Growing Up Skipper is teaching children about the different developmental stages of their bodies from pubescent to teen to adulthood, whereas Pregnant Midge is teaching children about pregnancy and birth. In no way, shape or form were the dolls trying to encourage girls to become pregnant teenagers or attempting to sexualize themselves. Parents were just being overly sensitive.

    • @ericahyland1624
      @ericahyland1624 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The Problem many people had with it was that the Doll it self was modeled after a Teenager. Like 15-19. The Taboo is born when you combine Pregnancy with 15-19 year olds. the whole "Teen Pregnancy Bad" It's encouraging Promiscuous Behavior. The Difference between "Pregnant Midge" and Your Friend's Mom was Your friend's Mom was Married. Midge was seen as the Girl who engaged in risky behavior with her boyfriend and then they were forced to give up their early adult lives and get married because they had a baby to look after because they made poor choices even if that wasn't Mattel's intent, many people thought Mattel was promoting Unhealthy habits. Trust me I think it was an over reaction too. I wish I had that doll. Call me a Perv if you want but I loved Playing Mommy and Daddy with my dolls as a kid. I always made them married and the Doll was always appropriate age. It was my imagination. I imagined my barbie dolls to be in their 20s not mid to late teens. Is that weird? No

    • @declaracionespolemicas
      @declaracionespolemicas ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@ericahyland1624 But where did the idea of her being 15-19 years old come from? Apparently Midge was meant to be married to Allan and already had a toddler with him, I would expect that they would at least be represented as being on their early to mid 20s. Nothing disgusting about it, and even if she wasn't "married", she's just a doll 🙄 goes to show there were always Karens wanting to complain about everything.

    • @ericahyland1624
      @ericahyland1624 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@declaracionespolemicas I know it's crazy. I guess the misconception that Midge was supposed to be a teenager came from the fact that Barbie was a Teenager and they were supposed to be best friends back in their home town. We're never told how old Midge is so people assumed she and Barbie were the same age. However it is possible for say a Sophomore in High school to be Friends with a Senior or even a Freshman to be friends with a Junior. It just means that one party is slightly older then the other. If they were childhood friends

    • @ericahyland1624
      @ericahyland1624 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Than it stands to reason that Midge was probably 2-4
      years Barbie's Senior.
      If That's the Case Then If Barbie is about 17 or 18 as we know her, That would make Midge between 20 and 23, Perfectly acceptable age to be a mother and in this case in marketing, Have a 3 year old son and a second on the way

      I look at it differently than some people. The Pregnant Midge doll and overall Happy Family line is showcasing Midge’s milestones and not following in the footsteps of her famous friend. While Barbie is continuing to build her resume with a plethora of careers, Midge is experiencing significant changes in her life such as tying the knot and starting a family. Critics are neglecting the fact that Midge actually did get married back in the nineties and that in the Happy Family line of dolls, she is a married adult and instead of acknowledging that, they’re deeming her as an "unwed teenage mother”. Although the pregnant Midge doll and the Happy Family line came out in the early aughts way before I even existed and I was born in ‘06 and if I was ever born in that time period that the Happy Family line came out, my mother would have no problem buying me that doll at all. Like Growing Up Skipper, Pregnant Midge isn’t that deep because these dolls are teaching children and generally young girls that puberty and pregnancy are a part of life and that we can’t eliminate those things out of the equation because it happens to everyone 💯

In the original set the kids were twins, but there were later editions where Mom (they were never given first names) was “pregnant” and came with a maternity outfit that converted to a post-maternity outfit after she “gave birth” to the included newborn.

    Interestingly, Ken's first foray into facial hair was 1973 Mod Hair Ken. He came with a sheet of flocked facial hair pieces that could be applied to his face. The adhesive was supposed to be reuseable, and the pieces included sideburns, moustaches, and a goatee. This concept was reused in 1976 for The Now Look Ken. These Ken dolls were paired with the Quick Curl and Deluxe Quick Curl lines of Barbie dolls, respectively. Needless to say those flocked stickers were not really a great concept, and 1980 Sport 'N Shave Ken was the next evolution of the idea. Instead of stickers, he came with a brown marker, and the doll's owner could draw facial hair on the doll that could be 'shaved' with water and foam 'razors'.

    I still have pregnant Midge with baby and a ton of adorable tiny accessories. My husband got her for me when I got pregnant for the first time. I guess that would make him Allan, haha. It was so clear on the box and on the store shelves that Midge and Allan were married and there was a whole family, even grandparents. My first Barbie was ballerina Barbie and I loved her so much. I wanted to be a ballerina very much, and she inspired me. My sister had hairstyle Barbie. You could cut her hair and then pull more out. She came with a hair dryer, curling iron, and all the hair accessories. I was jealous, but not when she eventually ran out of hair and went bald. We also had a fake "barbie" who was very ugly. She was thick so she didn't fit the regular clothes, her limbs didn't bend, and her hair was dark and poufy. Sadly, she didn't get much attention once we got our "real" ones. My daughters had the roller skating Barbie from the movie, a hand-me-down from their cousins.

      @ricochet9288 Exactly! We’re not trying to make math more difficult than it is, some of us have trouble comprehending, solving and retaining these complex mathematical concepts. Math isn’t for everyone. I know a lot of girls and women that find math hard and I know a lot of girls and women who are mathematicians. I’m not good at math and my mother isn’t good at math either. So I don’t think the Teen Talk Barbie is being stereotypical. Math is an essential yet difficult subject to learn, especially for me. I just think that parents are being overly sensitive and can’t handle the truth about it.

    The idea for Barbie was based on a German adult comic strip about a saucy dominatrix named Bild Lily. A doll was made and sold in adult novelty shops. A wife of one of the partners of Mattel saw the comic strip and doll, realized that girls were making their baby doll act like grown ups and presented the idea to Mattel. It was an uphill battle, with minimal production. This is why the first year dolls are so collectable and expensive. Mattel bought the rights to Lily, didn't really change her look and Barbara Millicent was born as a teenager.

      That’s fair feedback but again, the real problem in most of these is the fact that adults are giving feedback based on their adult minds instead of looking at all of these dolls from the perspective of a child. Nearly anything can be turned into something “dirty” when we look at it from our adult perspectives. Kids minds won’t go there unless they have been taught those things somewhere & that’s a sign of a bigger problem going on. Adults are always judging kids & their toys from adult perspectives.

    The fuss over the pregnant Midge was more about the lack of being able to see a wedding ring on the doll's finger. Some were concerned it would sanction teen pregnancy. What it really showed was, people don't read/pay attention before they act since the back of the box had pictures of Midge and Alan's wedding and their older child, Ryan. Mattel released several dolls in the bridal party including a six dolls set with Midge, Alan, Barbie, Ken, Kelly (renamed Stacie in that size and Kelly became the name of the toddler sister), and Todd (a reuse of the name of Tutti's twin) about 1990.

The skipper doll is a great way to show puberty in young girls, the dog mom dolls are a great way to teach responsibility with pets, the midge doll is a great way to teach about babies, how to handle them etc.
