    Ferrous particles can penetrate the paint and create corrosive compounds that eat deep into the paint’s sub-layers if left untreated. An iron remover contains unique ingredients that effectively dissolve the sintered iron by forming a water soluble iron complex.
    Iron removers open the pores of the paint and remove the root of the problematic ferrous particles. Claybars alone can only shave off the top of the iron particles, so you need the chemical decontamination to remove them from the paint.
    Also, I highly recommend that you watch my Detailing 101 series for beginners, where I explain different steps like iron removers, clay bar, polishing, protection, etc. It's super simple once you understand the basics, and your car will look and feel 100x better!

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Glad I could help! To that, I would also add that a new car is never new until it's properly detailed.
      - at the factory, the paint defects are often corrected quickly by rotary polishing which can leave marks and holograms, so polishing corrects those, before you lock that in long term with a ceramic coating for example.
      - vehicles are then transported by truck, train and boat so they are exposed to the elements, industrial fallout, brake dust, rail dust, etc
      - vehicles are often left at boat docks (when transported by boat) or in exterior parking lots for weeks or months, again being exposed to the elements
      - at the dealership, the vehicles are almost always poorly prepped using the same dirty water that was used for all the cars on a given day, and poor washing and drying methods leading to swirls and scratches
      - at the dealership, a layer of cheap wax or paint sealant is usually applied to attempt to make the paint glossy prior to delivery. It's crucial to remove any previous protection before you apply a ceramic coating, as coatings need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat.
      If you only plan on applying a regular carnauba wax or paint sealant though, you could decide to skip machine polishing, as those protectants can be applied over existing protection and it's not as crucial to prep the paint as well.
      I explain all of this in this popular video: th-cam.com/video/QgoyrC-5CMc/w-d-xo.html

    Cheers for that, Pan. Always a worthwhile step, although I would do the tar removal stage first, since tar would be flung on top of the fallout which was there from new. Decontamination always brings out the best in the car's base colour, as well as unlocking the shine in the clear coat.

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Thanks. Tar removers are generally way more aggressive chemically compared to iron removers, so I would only use tar removers when needed, meaning when you have actual tar deposits. And I would focus the tar remover on the spot with the contamination, I wouldn't necessarily spray the entire vehicle surface.
      And yes you'd do the tar removal before the iron removal.

    I love that you’re still responding. I have a three year old car that has some bad contamination. Don’t think the previous owner ever did this. Is this doable with a hose and a bucket? I don’t have access to to a power washer or foam cannon. Would the best process be wash, dry, iron decon, rinse, dry and wax?

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Yes you can still use a garden hose to wash a car, no problem. A pressure washer just makes things more efficient, all while using less water. There are many ways to wash and decontaminate and protect a car. What you wrote is ok, but you can step it up a notch to remove even more embedded contamination if you never did that.
      1) Wash the car thoroughly. You can use a stripping soap to get a deeper clean. Like this: bit.ly/41Y6hke
      2) Rinse the car, and you can either dry it at this point, or leave it wet. Spray the iron remover generously on the surface. Don't work in direct sunlight and don't let the product dry. Let it dwell for the amount of time recommended on the product label. Each product is different.
      3) Rinse. Then use a clay lubricant (or soapy water as a clay lube) and a decontamination towel like this: bit.ly/3WsWdPJ
      That step will remove any other contaminants from the paint and make the paint glass smooth.
      4) Rinse and dry the vehicle.
      5) If you feel you need to remove swirls and scratches, this is when you'd do machine polishing. This is optional. This step also greatly improves gloss, much more than applying a wax or sealant.
      6) Optional step is to use a paint prep spray to remove any residue or oils left, to ensure a better bond of the paint protection. A paint prep spray like this: bit.ly/3UAZZ6S
      7) Apply your protection.
      Those are optimal steps. But the bare minimum would be to wash, iron remover, clay, apply the wax.

  • @silo_fx3182

    Great tutorial. Bet that was the first chemical decontamination ever on that car. Thank you for adding info on coated cars also. Its good to know the differences in approach and products. Note to readers, don't clay bar your ceramic coating 🙂.

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Chemical decon steps are always preferred on coated cars. I would recommend the following steps:
      1) Wash the car with a decon shampoo like CarPro Descale. It's slightly acidic pH will help remove minerals and water spots.
      2) Rinse it, then use a tar remover if you have tar deposits.
      3) Rinse it, then use an iron remover to remove brake dust and industrial fallout.
      4) Rinse and dry the vehicle.
      5) Then use the water spot remover, which will also help to remove any minerals left on the coating that perhaps are masking its properties. Rinse, and wash the car again.
      The coating's properties should be restored at this point, assuming the coating is in good shape and was applied properly and is still within its claimed durability.
      Also, clay bars are abrasive by nature, and again, not recommended on coatings as you would damage the coating and potentially add some marring to the paint.
      If maintained properly, you shouldn't have much embedded contamination. In some rare cases where you might find some contamination left after all the chemical decon steps, like a bit of grit in the clear coat, you could use a synthetic clay towel (that uses a different clay media compared to traditional clay bars) and lots of clay lube, in order to lightly clay the surface. A clay towel like this one: bit.ly/43nrfce
      Or this one: bit.ly/43y0Mss
      So perforated synthetic clay decontamination towels can in theory be used to clay a coating, but test on an inconspicuous area first!

    I just want to add that CarPro Trix which is IronX + TarX combined is a bit harsh on plasti dipped surfaces. I plasti dipped my rear diffuser (in black) and when i had CarPro Trix sitting on there it caused some light blue-ish stains. I followed instructions to the tee, not letting it dry and working out of direct sunlight but still it stained the plasti dip. I had to repaint the diffuser after which wasn't a pain to do for me but just something to be aware of if anyone is going to be using CarPro Trix. Not sure if IronX on its own will do the same but getting a bottle in future as IronX on its own is apparently much better than the two products (ironx + tarx) combined in CarPro Trix.

    Thanks again for all your work and vidéos ! A question there : does it replace à claybar or is it complementary ?

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      This does not replace the clay stage. Iron removers only do one thing: remove iron particles (brake dust, rail dust, fallout). You must follow with a clay stage (clay bar, clay mitt, clay towel or clay scrub pad) to remove other embedded contaminants.
      So the iron removers and tar removers are a part of the chemical decon. The clay bar is part of the mechanical decon.
      But you would only clay paint that needs it, meaning if you feel grit or contamination on the surface. You wash the car, and then run your fingers especially in the lower parts of the doors and if you feel grit or contamination, it's time to clay.
      I highly recommend that you watch my Detailing 101 series for beginners, where I explain different steps like iron removers, clay bar, polishing, protection, etc. It's super simple once you understand the basics, and your car will look and feel 100x better!

      You found the right channel to help you learn everything about detailing.
      A new car is never new until it's properly detailed.
      So you can better visualize the new car prep process, here are the steps I perform on a brand new car for my customers:

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Merci!

Polissage, j'imagine.
      Encore merci.
      Je m'abonne, ça c'est clair. ;-)

    what is the difference between iron remover and rim cleaner? the reaction looks the same

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Iron removers do just one thing: help remove iron particles. Wheel cleaners that have iron removing capabilities have other things in their ingredients to also remove the grime, oils films, and other dirt on the wheels.
      I wouldn't use an iron remover to clean wheels. I see this done way too often, people (even pros sometimes) use pure iron removers to clean the wheels... That's not what they are truly designed to do.
      I'd clean the wheels first with a wheel cleaner, and then use the iron remover. Or, use a wheel cleaner that has iron removing capabilities built in to save a step. Something like Koch Chemie Magic Wheel Cleaner, Gyeon Iron Wheel Cleaner, etc.

    I recently went to my local ppf dealer where we discussed the process of decon. He mentioned about iron removal but wasn’t keen on claying the car when I mentioned glide and nano skin pad. He argued that instead of using any type of mechanical friction which would increase the chances of marring the surface, it is better to just let the chemical do the work and simply spray and repeat the process until there is no color change. Thoughts on this and what is the best process for decontamination?

    What is your take on where in the washing routine to put the iron remover on? I've seen a lot of videos (mostly from Sweden) where people put the iron remover on as part of the pre-wash (usually tar/salt remover first, then iron remover, then alkaline degreaser, then rinse off). Should one do it like in this video, AFTER both the pre-wash and handwash?

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Always use the iron remover AFTER you have washed the car. If you spray the iron remover before washing, the chemical needs to fight all the dirt and grime and won't necessarily reach all the iron particles under the dirt. So wash the car, and then use the iron remover.

      Koch Chemie only talks about wheels for this on their website and product label. But they do give a warning that states "Do not use on hot painted surfaces". So that likely means it could be used on a cool painted surface, but you'd have to confirm with the brand directly.
      They have a product called RRR (Reactive Rust Remover) that's meant for that purpose.

    how come these iron particles don't come off during the contact wash and would these particles be the cause of swirling?

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      They don't come off during the contact wash because they have embedded themselves deep into the clear coat. If you look at brake dust under a microscope, they have jagged edges, like fingers grasping to the clear coat's peaks and valleys. The iron removers modify the surface of those iron particles to make them rounder and smoother, so they can be flushed by rinsing once the chemical reaction is done.

      Either or, it doesn’t really matter. Some say applying on dry diluted the product less, but the dilution is minimal. Don’t overthink the moment.

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      Yes all iron removers smell like rotten eggs because of the active ingredient (thioglycolic acid). That’s normal. You wash your car first, then use iron remover. After the dwell time, rinse with a pressure washer or garden hose, it doesn’t matter.
      No need to wash the car again after that.

      Salut Sebastien.

      After the 1st layer, you wait 45-60 minutes and then apply the 2nd layer. Then wait 48 hours without exposing the vehicle to water or rain for that specific coating. And then I recommend waiting 2 full weeks before washing the car again.
      A new car is never new until it's properly detailed.
      So you can better visualize the new car prep process, here are the steps I perform on a brand new car from two of my customers:
