I prefer the auto mode. From the video you can see that the photos look closer to the scene in terms of shadows and what you can see. Oppo's colours in auto mode are also less saturated than the likes of the Xiaomi 15 series which I prefer (still much more saturated than an IPhone 16 pro though). The biggest reason though is portraits. This phone at 3x takes great portraits with relatively good skin tones and much more natural textures than the x200 pro for example, which has much more sharpening
Thanks for you review. I'm actually looking at possibly buying this phone to shoot video, and I welcome any advice here. I've used Canon DSLR cameras and an iPhone 13 Pro to previously shoot on, and found the iPhone was a really comfortable way to shoot, especially in tracking shots where it's stabilisation while walking was really awesome. I've now got an important job coming up and I need a versatile camera to work under all sorts of conditions for stills, but mainly video, with the need to quickly change lenses, and based on the easy and flexibility of the iPhone, and reading quite a few reviews on this Oppo, I'm edging towards the Oppo X8 Pro. I'd be keen to hear any thoughts from others with experience here, as this phone seems to tick an awful lot of boxes, especially if used with a phone cage and attachments, etc. Thanks for any feedback here.
Thanks Jermaine ... I ended up buying the Oppo , mainly over the OnePlus due to it being so similar but feeling as though it had additional features over the OnePlus , including the camera and zoom. So far I'm very happy with it , it's silky smooth , fast and responsive , and i enjoy using the camera . I'm actually using the master mode right now and swing the real differences it makes ... Great fun to try out . And i can see where you mean , master mode ( raw , not jpeg ) gives a subtlety to a lot of the shots that look very impressive indeed . Thanks again . How's your car ?
Hell, I also have the X8 pro for a few weeks now and I think is very good. Master mode is interesting but by using it you give up on the Ultra HDR/ Proxdr features that very often looks great on the phone screen and I think will be more valuable in the future when screen tech will feed to computers and monitors too. I agree that sometimes using Matser mode gets the best result in terms of realism. So far I enjoy discovering the best way to capure pics in various conditions. I hope to get updates to improve the highlights management and also the white balance that I agree is too cold in indoor pictures for example.
Thanks for the video! I love my Oppo phone, but I agree with the processing. It's too much in a lot of situations and the AI zoom enhancements are quite extreme, but also can look quite impressive with the right subject.
I have the X8 pro. I really like the pictures in auto mode. They have a clarity, sharpness and color that is perfect for me. I don't think the pictures are too processed. So far, every viewer of the pictures has been impressed. When taking pictures in the evening or at night, I sometimes used exposure compensation and reduced the exposure by one or two stops to get the evening mood right. I don't like master mode so much. I like to use xpan mode for impressive black and white shots.
I'm not the biggest fan of the too bright, sharpened auto mode. Most of the phone is great overall. Same thing with the older model I'm using. And for some reason the main sensor (on older) has sub par fine details; you take a pic in Lightroom camera and see what the sensor should be picking up.
I kinda agree. As much as I want to justify my newly bought Oppo Find x8. The auto mode's processing isn't really to my liking. It looks too processed. And as someone who has a mirrorless camera, that over processed "smartphone" look is more noticeable.
Thanks for the first impressions. I've had the X8P for a month now and your findings reflect my own. Auto has good HDR but a tealy tone that's too cool, while Master Mode gives me very realistic colours, but is otherwise quite close to the Xperia 1VI it replaced for me, in terms of details on the main sensor, though I think Sony's AF is better. As a pocket computer, however, the Oppo blows it away. As a camera, if Sony up their sensor game on the VII, I can imagine myself going back to it. I like the Oppo - it gives me the best social-ready HDR shots and realistic Master shots - but the Sony felt more real.
@ThroughJermainesLens agreed. This bizarre experiment with the motorized optical zoom - it's interesting and innovative but comes with too many compromises. I also think they'll have to sacrifice some of that svelte form factor to up the sensors. They can't keep ploughing the same furrow for what would be the fourth iteration of that periscope.
Very similar to me! I went to OX8P from a Sony Xperia 5 IV. I really miss the focusing system and the neutral processing, but the phone felt dated, fingerprint sensor failed and 12mp just doesn't cut it in 2024/5. As a phone the Oppo is far superior and am really happy with the clarity of pictures, but the processing is quite different. To combat the processed look in 'auto' I use the 'natural' filter with -0.3 EV and it looks more subtle 👍
Master mode is amazing , auto mode is disappointing, this is an example of hardware optimization and high end hardware doesn't equal good pictures if the software isn't good
