I used a plastic snap lid container from Walmart, and an aluminum turkey pan to focus a external antenna wifi device to shoot wifi over to my aunt’s house next door. It worked so well that you could still get signal on the other side of the house!

I never had range problem with 2.4 GHz (my house is small), but had a lot of Bluetooth interference with mobile devices. Two phones that I own from Xiaomi and Samsung shit themselves when Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz WiFi is used together.
Also many routers allow you to individually name each band. if you name them both the exact same name, your phone will only see one network and pick what it believes to be the best connection
Also use Wifi Analyzer on your phone, go through the areas in your home where you most often use the connection and change your access point to channel(s) that are least used by your neighbours.
Nah screw your neighbours change your channel width to 80mhz and they can just suffer XD
@@r4z0r84 Yes, may the strongest antenna survive :) Still even at 80MHz you should target the main channel to the least congested one and the extension channels in the least congested direction from that channel (up/down), assuming your AP alows that level of tuning. The difference in range and bandwidth will probably be marginal but it's free and every % counts.
@@the-niker oh of course I was joking haha going for 80mhz when you have more than like 2 devices is a terrible idea, always better to just select uncontested channels and sometimes if in a high density area like an apartment building going down to 20hz channel width might make your wireless more reliable though slower. Range itself though is mostly to do with the power output and overlap if using multiple AP's but eh this might help some people if they just want notifications on their phones lol

I'm seriously considering switching to a mesh setup instead. I'm currently having connectivity issues in meetings depending on where I am located in my apartment.
Google wifi worked well for me. I have a 3,200 sq ft house and the mesh system worked great out of the box, even better with a little tweaking about with the dns in the settings
Deco mesh is cheap and great value for money. I got one recently and it has moda a world of difference. Just make sure not to get the E4 model because that's limited to 100 mbps.
It could be as simple as changing channels in your router.
You should aim for 30% overlap if you have just turned everything up to max TX/Rx/power they'll be overlapping too much so you'll stay connected to the bad reception, devices usually switch over at -75dba you can get an app to test the wireless signal for free and use that to work out where your -75dba is majority of the time you've got too many too close together and they need to be turned down, or its way too far away and you just completely drop out, staying connected at a low signal is the most frustrating, you can also turn on aggressive roaming on most devices which forces them to always select the highest signal but they don't always work well.
@@Xfade81 agreed, seen so many people install extensions and giving them a different ssid they all need to be the same ssid and password or they fully disconnect between them.
A friend of mine recently got 2.4 GHz only wifi dongle and at certain times of the day it was just unuseable... 2.4 GHz is soooo convoluted this days (almost every wireless gadget uses it) that I'll be surprised if it works better than 5 GHz anywhere other than wasteland 😄

Did your friend check all channels?
In my experience most people use the same channels so you always will find a non convoluted one.

Maybe that's the worst case scenario but I just wanted to point out that while it's worth to try 2.4 GHz if you have issues with 5, be ready to be disappointed eventually.
@@Gurj101 It's not just smart gadgets, Microwaves, remotes, keyboards, mice, key fobs, %75+ of internet enabled devices and anything with Bluetooth.
Microwaves is a good one.. it'll jam the whole signal until the sodding thing has finished cooking.

Bold of you to assume that we have 5 GHz enabled routers. Our ISPs only give 2.4 GHz enabled routers, sometimes they aren't even gigabit ethernet enabled.
Your issue is using your isps router and paying monthly for it. Waste of money, buy your own and forgo the isp router

@@fungo6631 depends on your isp and situation. All I had to do was connect the router you buy using Ethernet to the ont box that is usually located within your house or somewhere. Then depending on the isp, you’d have to call them and let them know that you want to switch your ONT from coax to Ethernet. Then the service rep should handle releasing the IP address from your old rented router to the newly bought one that you’re not renting. That’s pretty much it. Buy router, connect it via Ethernet from ont box. Call isp and tell them you want to switch from coax to Ethernet. You’re all set
Sounds like a lot but it really isn’t and it’s pretty easy. You save money and you have your own router and not your isps. The only thing that sucks is calling but depending on who your provider is can be easy or a hassle
Most people don't even realize they only need 2-5mbps speeds for their zoom chats, youtube and netflix sessions.
Not if you want to stream FHD 60fps to 4K 30fps, then you'll need like 15mbps

Besides that most people who would watch 4k content use ethernet on devices that would be streaming 4k video. You can on mobile but lets be honest you can bare tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on those tiny screens. 4k is best on a 30" or bigger display
I'm going to transmit 2,4GHz Wi-Fi signal using an high gain antenna pointed to an 1,7m diameter old TV parabolic antenna which will have a normal Wi-Fi router in its focal point. Wish me luck, guys!
If you're trying to shoot your wifi far you could get some ubiquiti nanobeams or if you're on the same power grid out to a shed or something you can use network over power ethernet plugs which is effectively ethernet over power.
@@r4z0r84Thanks, It could be perfect, but I don't have enough money to buy good things like that. My plan is use what I have: two places, one internet point, a lot of tabs about electromagnetic propagation and a brazilian thing called "poder da gambiarra".

Would love to see full sized video about different ways to extend wifi coverage, like using coaxial cables, power lines extenders, etc. In most cases running a cat cable between rooms is just not an option 😥
Another suggestion, set up a spare router as a wireless client, then you can plug anything you want up to it, even another router run as a new WAP and personally the basic wifi extenders are good enough as long as you're ok with at most half bandwidth.
Also, would like to point out that you don't need a cat cable to go through walls/ceilings/floors or anything, you can get flat cables and they easily fit through small spaces like above/underneath a door crack for example, as long as you have enough length you can get a little creative with them and run them around all kinds of things.

when you say coax, do you mean like running low loss cabling so that you can extend your router's antennas? or more along the lines of moca?
power lines extenders are terrible. it's LAN or Mesh. everything else sucks.

The USB WiFi adapter I got is light years better than the integrated.
2.4ghz is a great idea. Except when you live in a congested area like apartment complex or city, especially with Comcast so anyone who has a rented modem is forced to also broadcast public hotspot (even when disabled) and it also broadcasts hidden diagnostic and home security networks. So 1 person ends up broadcasting (between 2.4 and 5GHz) 4-6 WiFi networks x how many other people are around you… ONE router can hog every 2.4 non-overlapping all by themselves…
You don’t even need to be in a congested area, just having a few gadgets at home running on 2.4 GHz for WiFi, Bluetooth, wireless speakers, wireless mice and keyboards, gaming controllers, microwaves, etc, and a single dwelling can already saturate 2.4 GHz.
Buy a cheap router, connect it to the modem disable wifi on the Comcast, configure your router as you see fit, problem solved. It is not rocket science.
@@tz-pw6uv yes, tell that to every neighbor in your apartment complex. My old place in Comcast’s footprint had over 500 networks visible in my unit. New place im at maybe 40.
That would be great if my router gave me the option to choose between 2.4 and 5 GHz instead of it deciding for me.
Mine has one! If you access your gateway you can create a separate SSID and password for the 2.4 Ghz band and it'll show as another network.

@@bytesizedmediaprod not all ISP-gateways have that option. I know multiple ISP's in the Netherlands block it and only allow for bandsteering. That works fine for me most of the time though.
Look for an option called "Band Steering". Turn that off.
Why does this video assumes that most people are on 5 GHz when in reality the vast majority of people are on 2.4?
because linus' viewer demographic is full of tech enthusiast/gamers. dual band wifi is one of my criteria when shopping for cable modems or motherboards.
My 60 year old relatives use 5ghz on their spectrum modern/router.. it's pretty common

Connect to 2.4 GHz Wifi and watch my phone shit itself when also connecting to my Bluetooth earbuds. Used to have to use my PC WiFi as a hotspot to broadcast 5 GHz WiFi. Life is much easier now that I bought a dedicated router.

I extended my range by putting my router in my attic where it only has to penetrate one wall (ceiling) to get into any room and that wall is only 1 set of drywall instead of 2. My entire house has 100% full strength coverage.
To get a better range, disconnect the cable that is behind the router, it interferes with the waves with its electric radiation

All my neighbours use 2.4 so I'm thinking there's a lot of interference, I'm just planning to switch to 5 to see if it's better. Plus Bluetooth is also 2.4ish, so there's interference with that too.

@@muzlee7479 do you prefer analog or digital antenna television? Digital can send 4 crystal clear channels but with a super unreliable signal that constantly drops out after a few kilometers while analog can send 1 snowy channel more than 100 kilometers with no signal drop out.

It’s cool how most smart Wi-Fi routers and access points are able automatically move devices between 2.4 and 5.0GHz channels based on strength, speed, and range. Nest Wi-Fi does this, as did the original Google Wi-Fi models.
Eh. All better wifi networks won't have separate 2.4 and 5GHz options and your client will automatically switch between them depending on what's better at that time.
Except for it doesn't always choose the best one, my 5GHz is never selected because it has a much lower signal strength in my office, that being said the 5GHz is about 3x the speed of the 2.4GHz band even with the degraded signal strength.
All better routers (or maybe even every single one) have the option to enable separate 2,4 and 5 GHz if you like.

5ghz is just better in any case. Even far away with low signal it's better. 2 bars 2.4gz I get 2mbit and it's unreliable af, 5ghz same spot I get 1 bar and get 30mbit out of 50 and it's reliable.
Just gotta have the same ssid and password and even a $69 modem router will do it well

Hey. I'm on a quest to future-proof myself against becoming an elderly person who's struggling with technology. I'm fine with casual use of smartphones and computers but since i'm very frugal then i'm a bit worried about over time falling out of the loop. Following local&(inter)national news is nice and all but it doesn't do a whole lot for keeping me up to date when it comes to new options/capabilities that have entered the budget price range via software/devices of various kinds. I just hate opting out of options/possibilities simply because i'm not even aware of their existence. How good is this channel for avoiding that ?
This channel is probably more for someone who's already very interested in technology and wants to hear a simple explanation of certain protocols or very new technology that might not even exist yet. If that's you, great! Welcome aboard. Even so, it's great if you want to learn and a certain topic, but other videos might just be too involved to follow. Hope this helps!

"tech news" seems to be too broad as it applies to options outside of my price range and even news at the manufacturing level of the topic.
You can also get an app on your phone to test wifi signals and majority of modems/routers/wifi only shoot 2.4ghz in one direction (back and forth) or (left to right) you can sometimes extend the range within your house by turning your wireless modem 90°. I did this for my sister's house as she didn't want to spend any money and the reception in the baby's room for the baby monitor went from -76dba(terrible) to -58dba(excellent) just from turning her modem/router :)
Try tune down your band width also ;) 40MHz will more likely to be affected by interference than 20MHz
Yes. You must remember that your router will send at 40/80/80+80 MHz, but it will also RECEIVE on a channel that wide. There could be a lot of interference there... By lowering your channel width and selecting spectrum out of the way from your neighbors, you can actually increase reliability and speed of your connection by using a LESS wide channel in particularly noisy environments.

Actually it's smart to use separate SSIDs for 2.4/5 in houses with multiple routers. Use same SSIDs across all routers but separate 2.4 from 5. If not you will end up connected to a 2.4 for extended periods of time without switching to a 5 that has a slightly weaker signal than your 2.4 but a lot more speed and any packets dropped due to weak signal will be fully compensated and then some by the extra speed.

Of course. Devices still suck when it comes to switching between the two bands.
I prefer switching manually instead of having always a bad connection.
Better advice: Get a range extender. Even better advice: Pay for ethernet wiring to be installed if you're allowed to do so. Won't help with wireless devices like phones, but will help with consoles and PCs.
And you could directly install a range extender or mesh node onto the Ethernet and get faster speeds instead of a normal extender.
Would fitness watches or lights even support a 5ghz connection? Out of all the diy stuff ive done only a handful of gadgets did support it cause its not exactly essential for most of these simple devices
Perks of the third world: almost nobody has 5Ghz capable devices, and our internet speeds aren't capable of getting close to max the 2.4GHz speeds

5GHz is there even on budget phones nowadays. It's pretty common on new Routers.
But 2.4 is crowded when you live in the city, in an apartment building, with about 100 neighbors within 20 meters.

@@RyuuzakiRue definitely. Almost everyone in an apartment complex uses the same channel because they don't know to change it. There's always been wide ranges of traffic free channels in my experience.
If you live in an apartment you won't have trouble with your 5ghz unless you installed your router in a faraday cage.

I had absolutely no idea, that is super helpful to know. Still, my biggest problem is my router is in my room and my new PC on the opposite side of the room consistently disconnects even though it's less than 15 feet away with no obstructions. That's on my provider though rather than anything else I think.

In big cities your are surrounded with 2,4Ghz Routers, so it’s most of the time the best idea to have more access points with 5Ghz, not just one router.

Lmao as a veteran tech I've said this same thing a billion times to clients.
Usually from my experience 2.4 and 5GHz are the same SSID, and the device just swaps between as needed. This would presumably only apply to people who have manually set a different SSID for their 2.4 and 5GHz radios on their hub.

2.4 GHz helps when the Wi-Fi signal has a lot of walls to pass through. That said though, the best way to improve Wi-Fi signal is investing in a Mesh Wi-Fi system. I have a Netgear Nighthawk Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi system, and it gives me excellent coverage throughout my entire house. It's to the point that there's no longer any part of the house where I don't have a full Wi-Fi signal, and devices like my Oculus Quest 2 benefit from being in the same room as one of the Mesh Wi-Fi Satellites. Wi-Fi 6 in general just greatly improves Wi-Fi performance overall, especially with multiple devices.

2.4 is slower and way more susceptible to interference from common everyday devices. Range does not Trump speed. I normally don't downvote LTT but if you don't have enough 5ghz coverage you just need more.

You could also just set your ssid and password to be the same on both your 2.4ghz and 5ghz wireless networks and it will automatically roam to the 2.4ghz. the only issue you get doing this is stupid 2.4ghz only smart devices have to have 5ghz turned off during setup but once they're connected bam doesn't matter anymore

I bought more routers, now I have full 5ghz signal in any spot of the house

God this is genuinly so useful. My router is in my room which is at one end of the house and my dad complains how his TV goes off in his room which is all the way on the opposite end of the house. I'll have to try swapping his TV to the 2.5ghz wifi.

Before we changed our spectrum plan we had a 5G and a 2G connection from 1 router and modem. Now that it got changed we’re stuck with just 1 internet source now and it don’t even seem to touch my room because of how many walls there are.
Shouldn't a decent, modern device and router automatically work this out based on the signal strength and distance?

Nowadays Android doesn't let you control which frequency to use anymore... at least that's the case for my Xperia since 2018. You used to be able to select 2.4 or 5GHz
