Just climbing my loft ladder over here || DIY rustic milled cedar loft ladder build.

  • Struggling is my middle name, but we all know that by now! 😝
This idea of turning a slab of cedar into a loft ladder came to my head, and even though it didn't quite come to fruition the way I had hoped (with this particular live edge cedar), I know the concept will work and I hope it inspires you to maybe do something similar! There was an itch I needed to scratch, so executing this material into a loft ladder just had to happen. Will it match the rest of the cabin? Dunno, but I kinda didn't care at that point.
One thing I always need to remember is that working with live edge, rough-sawn material (without fancy tools) is always harder than just going to the lumber store and buying dimensional lumber to build something. This way lends for a very unique and rustic look, which is amazing, but it always ends up being harder.
But I legit think this turned out SOOOO cool; better than I thought it would, and I'm happy I took the chance on it and struggled my way through to see what my brain told me would look neat. 😬
Now the tung oil - I normally don't like too much finish on my wood projects - I really like things to stay calm and natural. But I also know that this needed something to seal it, and secure it, so I tried a new product. I always like to try new ways of doing things/finishing things, and I do like the outcome on this. This particular cedar is super aged and 'handsome' - the finish brought out the nice rich browns in the wood, not so much the orange and yellows of other woods. yay!
No surprise, it all took me just a bit longer than I thought it would, which meant that this video is only a ladder build and not a delivery and install day too, so I will see you next week for that video.
Stay tuned until the very end - for all the pet lovers out there, your heart will melt 💝
Thanks so much for watching, and see you in the next one!
    Michelle 💕💕💕💕

Lenny has come to life, congratulations. You have healed his soul and restored his embrace of life. As my Jewish Princess tells me, these are stars in your heavenly crown.
Interesting ladder design and build. Looking forward to seeing what you build with the inner slab chunks; such pretty wood. Your intermediate, stylized clothing change should be used for Steve’s valentines’ day gift. Wishing you kids and your furry pack a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together. Peace princess.

Those cedars look like they were fire killed. A fire may have blown thru your property 100+ years ago. Every other tree species that died then rotted away after the fire. Cedars just take forever to rot.
You could resaw the original rungs thinner and then carved a "live edge" to match the side rails instead of using the other slab with sketchy big checks. If this ladder doesn't work out you can build a new one.
Sometimes when we make do with what we have we have to make compromises. It is especially important to NOT make compromises that impact structural integrity on something that needs to be structurally sound. Thanks for the episode and stay safe.

I love your new live edge ladder. It looks great, but I think if it were mine, I would do a partial fill of black epoxy, just enough to cover the structural screw that is a very unnatural color and look. Black epoxy would just look like a dark shadow. You are a DIY genius.

I agree! I love the look of your ladder. The live edge will make it fit in great at the cabin. I think it will be plenty strong enough for your use. But I think I would go one more step and fill the split rungs with black epoxy. If you don’t I think in time they will be an issue. Love it!❤❤❤

Someone may have mentioned this, but I haven't read all comments. The trees that are struck by lightning will look burned and die, most of the time it travels on the outside of the tree and explodes the bark off them. My Pine trees get the same look and bark will be scattered 100 feet from the tree base. On the subject for finishes, experiment with the Toung Oil: mixture of 1part Toung oil+ 1 part Shellac + 1 part Mineral Oil. You can change the mineral oil amount for your preference. It leaves a surface resistant to stains. Multiple coats can be applied for more durability. Light fine sanding between coats will improve the luster. As always, Love your videos.

Yes.... The sander and the planer can, if done correctly, can increase the smoothyossity. Increasing the smoothyossity will, for sure, reduce the roughcuttyness. You need a shop and a mask so you aren't breathing all the smoothyossity dust. It is my opinion that you have imbued that slab of Cedar with more that adequate ladderation. It will server you well in your cliff dwelling that is very well endowed with beautifimus rustification. I'm so happy for Lenny. What a great thing you have done by giving him a whole new life. And still I'm smiling.

Ok, its time, its time you build yourself a full on woodshop!! With an actual thickness planer, like the Dewalt 735, a nice 6 or 8 inch jointer, a full size cabinet table saw, and a sturdy workbench because that clamping rocking moving craziness rip you did with that circular saw is an accident waiting to happen! No offense, you are awesome at getting what you need done, but you really would be safer and much more effective if you had a woodshop. I would LOVE to see what you could do with the right tools. A big workbench, jointer, planer, and table saw, and you could open so many new doors to your builds! And honestly, with your love for creating you would be an absolutely incredible woodworker!!

I kinda liked the first working wardrobe you chose...😁
Probably would be a little chilly for that at this time of year...🥶
We have much to look forward to in the summer time though...🤗

Well Michy, as a good friend once told me "Creative minds are seldom tidy!" yet you sure get wonderful and unique end products. The live edge ladder is one of a kind like you. Isn't it funny how a hound like your Clyde with those big ol' ear flaps can be stone deaf when their mind is focused on something else like food morsels or a good scent.

Maybe a thinner, lighter ladder that's hinged at the top would make sense. Such a ladder could be lifted up and out of the way of interior floor space, then it could be lowered down when you want to go up on the loft. You might consider using a pre-fab folding door like many homes have for access to the attic.

I forgot one important idea !
When I build an arbor in my back yard , I used a product named LIQUID NAIL it’s In tubes and will fit the standard caulk guns ! I also used screws like you did for my project !!
    The product works well !

If you cut your new ladder in half lengthwise you'd have two ladders that are half as heavy. Then you could use them as an extension ladder in case you needed more to grab on to in your loft. They might be light enough to hang with magnets under the loft. You can always bolt them together to form the original ladder.

i mention this because ladder rungs seem very important: someone in the trades told me that you should not have weight bearing screws go into the end grain of wood - screws/nails are best perpendicular to the grain so they grab into each layer and compress it, gives way more shear strength and grip of the fastener into the wood. there are tricks furniture/cabinetry makers and framers use to keep to this rule, using supports underneath that align the grain best is one way. i am sure other tradesmen here can give more info, if not i think quick google/youtube searches will give ideas.

One thing I could have done was some pocket hole screws from underneath in addition to what I did do. I’ll see how it goes …

My cat loves Cedar. I have a piece of Cedar wood. That he rubs on and rubs on and I know when he starts, pushing it around that he wants me to send it and add a little bit of moisture to it. Cause he does the same thing. He'll grab and smell it and rub his face on it. I think it's funny.
