Rescuing our timber frame home? | How NOT to build a deck ep2

  • Continuing on from where we left off - discovering that our 5-7 day deck resurfacing is now turning into a near (if not total) deck rebuild that's likely going to take a couple of months (or more). The rot was worse than we expected, but we are lucky to have at least found it now (and not 5 years down the road). Part of the house has issues as well.
In this video I am working the long weekend on my own, tackling a list of projects to get done by Tuesday morning.
Thanks for watching and see you in the next one!
    M 💜💜

Good afternoon Michelle. Try using a rectangular shovel to scrape away the bark. Having sharpened the lower part it will be much easier to work than with a scraiper.

I know about wood rot. LP compressed wood siding soaked up water and LP give us $8k compensation. Had the house resided in ABC Steel Seamless siding. Been great. Hail just bounces off. I'm sure your house will be great when you are done. Love the dogs. BTW, I would put some snow brakes on the roof to keep the snow in place. That roof is big ski jump for the snow.

You are one amazing woman Ms Roxie. Again Steve can sure plan his trips. Could be worse for you and be stuck in some port waiting on a part for weeks... Or weather not allowing you to leave port. I'd be grateful to be in the beautiful mountains with the dogs. Just a thought 🙂

Hi Michelle. Thanks for the video. If i could give you a couple suggestions to make your life easier while working alone. Anything you put on a trailer wether it be lumber or logs or any kind of material..should always have dunnage underneath it. That goes for items on the ground as well. That way its already elevated so you can get slimgs or chains or whatever else underneath it. Easiest way you could have offloaded those logs was if it was on dunnage you could sling the logs up off the back end of trailer and with truck hooked up to trailer you just drive away and pull trailer out from under logs. Which brings me to the 2nd suggestion. Remove the door on your skidsteer. Theres 1 wiring connection for the wipers to unplug and the little gas cylinder has a little metal clip that holds the ball in the socket. Pop that off and lift the door up off the hinges. Takes 2 seconds to do and makes life easy to get in and out of skidsteer with forks elvated while your workimg alone. Youll no longer be stuck in the skidsteer unable to open a door to hook up your slings. Hope that helps. Lookimg forward to next weekends video

Man your a trooper!... thats one heck of a big job you guys are doing... BEEN THERE DONE THAT!...Mold, mildew, rot, bugs, spiders, ants, smell, rotted wood, wet gyprock, wet insulation, rotted nails, screws,...... make sure to spray Vinegar is better at killing mold because it can work on both porous and nonporous surfaces. It also terminates molds at their roots so the mold won't return and is also safer than bleach. You can even combine it with baking soda to make it more effective. (I got vinegar info off internet)

I love to see how you look for solutions to all sorts of problems that are obvious to experts. However, the path you take to reach a solution, maybe longer, maybe sometimes proving to be a dead end, maybe imperfect, is just Yours.
I love to see you trying to solve problems on your own that mankind dealt with long ago 😉

You are right, larch gums up blades something horrible, I live a little south of you and have the same mill, I love the wood, it’s strong and rot resistant. There are two things I do that help a lot. When I can I fall the trees in winter, and when I’m milling and the blade begins to gunk up I have a squirt bottle of diesel that I spray on the blade while it’s cutting down the log-works pretty slick.

Raise the forks a bit higher than needed and curl then down just a tad so you can see the tips of the forks and you will learn to aim right away, and then your skills will do the rest.
My neighbor was a mentor to me starting when I was 13 in 1977, he was a self employed excavating contractor, he taught me everything, he said to me one day that “there ain’t no such thing as can’t, I left can’t in Texas in 1963 when I moved my family to
Flint” and you surly fit that description.

Hey ; When i saw that flight of stairs off your deck it reminded me of something important , my cabin is a fire lookout type of building , before walling it completely up , i had a flight of stairs that got me up to the observation portion , "top". In the winter , they had to be cleaned off , their height was 25 ', I fell off them not once but twice luckily not getting seriously hurt . I don't intend to be a doug downer but please put up a cable railing on the decking out @ the Cabin . I dried that sucker in , fashioned a new way up & retired those damn stairs .

Looks like you have a big project ahead of you. I've been a builder for 35 years and built many decks and I have found deck 2 wall spacers the best product for attaching deck
ledgers to the side of structures. The best part is the ledger is spaced away from the building envelope so air and water can pass through......no flashing to fail.

Cool house, is the bear sculpture a bronze? Dig it as well as the rock fireplace, which could also be used as a wood fired clay kiln. Good property for a sculpture garden. The builder of my log home decided he was going to turn the deck off the loft Master bed into a sun room. So he built a wall with large windows in it and sat it on top of the large beam under the deck. Unfortunately he hadn't capped that beam before doing this and everytime it rained water ran down and sat onto the largest beam (8inches by 14 inches tall 30 feet long) eventually rotting it out. I found this while removing that wall(we wanted it to be a deck again) and had to replace that beam and rebuild the deck. What a PITA! I feel for you.

I also think you already deeply suspect the other ledger board as you edited in a comment. I unfortunately agree. As someone else commented - if you do that as well then you know it's done correctly.
