    HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
    I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

    A magnetic switchable device (often called a magnetic base) is a magnetic fixture that uses one or more permanent magnets in a configuration that allows the external field to be turned on or off. They are used in many applications including optics, metalworking, lifting, and robotics, to attach items to metal surfaces in a secure but temporary way.The magnetic base may have a V cut into the bottom of the base or the back. This V allows the base to be attached to a round bar such as the column of a drill press or a pipe.
    One type of magnetic switchable device is made from two blocks of iron, with a round cavity bored through the centre. The halves are joined together with a non-ferrous material such as brass or aluminium. A round permanent magnet is inserted into the bored hole and a handle is attached to allow rotation of the magnet. This act of rotation changes the orientation of the magnetic field.
    In the off position, the poles are oriented towards the non-ferrous core. The iron blocks act as keepers by bridging between both poles.
    In the on position, the poles are each in one iron half, which then acts as an extension. The field is effectively passing across an air gap (at the base and top). If this gap is bridged with a piece of iron, it becomes part of the magnetic circuit and will be attracted with the full strength of the magnet.A magnetic base can therefore be attached in a variety of positions to any ferrous surface, allowing the base to be positioned in the desired orientation.
    An alternative to the post and swiveling connectors is an arrangement whereby a series of interconnecting swivels can be set in position by tightening or loosening a central member. This member may be made from wire rope as it has to be extremely flexible yet strong in tension, the possibilities for positioning this type is probably no more than the two post type but its advantage lies in the fact that there is only one mechanism (screw) to loosen or tighten the arrangement making it easier to use.

    With admittedly no basis or experience on the subject, I'm convinced that the holes are caused at the beginning of the pour when the hot copper hits the (relatively) cold mold and rapidly freezes on contact. What would happen if you got that mold just smokin' hot (near copper's melting point) before pouring? Would you still get those holes?

    The magnet thingy probably works by twisting one magnet in relation to another so they can be in opposition (cancel out) or in conjuction (amplification).

      Its likely caused by gases dissolved into the molten metal that make their way out as it cools. Could also be something in the metal mold being released as well. Kind of like how before water boils you can see bubbles forming against the walls of a pot. I suppose it could also be caused by contaminants in the crucible too.

    Thanks again!

    Out of curiosity, and if you get a minute to respond, what is it exactly that foams up at the top of aluminum when casted? I mean, slag, obviously, but... what makes aluminum slag like that?

    • @SamCM40K
      @SamCM40K 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I'm not mistaken it is the impurities in the metal. I am probably wrong though. 🤔

    • @peterherrington3300

    • @audrey_johnson
      @audrey_johnson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Impurities and also..quick oxidization make the surface that hit air form a "film". When its disturbed it will stick to everything including itself and make bubbles. Hence the frothy appearance it can have. That's why in some videos he remelts it back to aluminum to get as much out of it as possible. Alumifoam!

    • @ILEFTCAPS0N
      @ILEFTCAPS0N 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Generally, if you do a pour and keep the crucible stationary it won't have holes, but if you move it around while it's pouring, it can cause those holes to appear.
      Since melted copper is really thin, it pours just like water (basically why you can overfill the mold and it doesn't want to spill over the sides, where as aluminum does) and this means when it's being poured while moving around, it splashes around and hits the sides and itself which causes a lot of air bubbles to form and rapidly expand trying to escape.
      tl;dr gently pour it in a constant stream while keeping the crucible still and you'll be okay.
