My main problem with babydumpling and with mukbang content in general is that it feels very much like it’s promoting disordered eating at best and a full-blown eating disorder at worst. Binge-eating is still an eating disorder whether you purge afterwards or not (though as someone who has struggled with an ED for most of my life, I’d hazard a guess that most of these people are most likely purging afterwards).

Metabolisms can vary by a few hundred calories, but not by 10,000 calories. That girl isn’t being 100% on what’s going on. I won’t presume to speculate whether she’s faking, purging, or maybe has some disorder where she doesn’t absorb any nutrients from her food, that’s her own business, but there’s no way she’s just a normal gal who really eats that much

At the end of the meal, she looked pregnant. Like, just a massive belly. She explains that she has a big stomach and no sense of being full and she prepares before and after the meal, and actually doesnt eat anything for a while after the challenges.

    • @tropistan7735
      @tropistan7735 ปีที่แล้ว +40

I don't get how people can't see that. Not only is she fake eating, the majority of mukbang videos (esp those not gaining weight) have a spit bucket. This is why their editing is so choppy from beginning to end. So that viewers don't question all the edits when they are in fact spitting. I thought this was an obvious fact but the comments here show that people are still living in the myth of "fast metabolism" which has been debunked.
Just wasting food for clicks and people just keep falling for it. I have observed skinny people and the one thing they all have in common is they don't actually eat a lot and/or are extremely active. One guy would stuff his face with 2 burgers at 10 am then have lunch at 1 pm but barely have anything over the next three days. It's like his appetite came in waves and he would perform these "omg my friends just eats everything and stays skinny". A girl would order large and super sized of everything. She would take three bites, play around with it for an hour then it would end up in the trash. Once in a blue moon she might finish a large meal but it was always like her eyes were writing checks that her stomach couldn't cash.

Watching her sushi video I can just imagine how exhausted and sweaty she was after that, I can see that bingeing exhaustion on her face as she starts eating the 2nd sushi roll. I'd be in so much pain, but yes I was able to eat this much. I know it's hard to believe, but it is possible to eat 10,000 calories in one sitting. It's sick and sad, which is why most people do it in private lol.

Binge eating is disordered eating. We are not about to be out here glamorizing, admiring, gawking at, or financially incentivizing EDs.
I know someone who eats just like this and people think she can eat whatever she wants in whatever quantities she wants and stay thin; her secret is that she's starving herself when she's not binging.
If something seems too bizarre to be true, it is.

Omg this! Just because they film eating a few bites of fast food or even one mustang you have no idea what they do next. They can either starve themselves after or worse the purge after.
I get so angry with this idea of oh well skinny people can eat whatever and how much of whatever they want. It's a lie!!! They don't do it every day or even that often or they have a high level of activity to off set it. Or they have a tape worm. You can't make excess calories disappear. It's not genetic to be super skinny or fat. It's behaviors. Genetics dictate where you store fat not how much.

As soon as you mentioned the double standard, I went, "Mmhmm, mmhmm!" It's true! People pretend to be so concerned about health, but when skinny people are unhealthy, it's okay. It even happens to me; I tell people that I'm concerned about what I eat and how little I exercise, but I can't bring myself to do it all (yet), and people immediately say, "No, you're so healthy! Don't say bad things about yourself!" Like, I'm not...I just know that the way I live is not currently healthy. But people cannot fathom a thinner person not being healthy. 🤦‍♂️

What i was thinking the whole time. People don't understand people can get bigger due to EDs or their environment. i remember hearing a story of a woman saying her mom showed her love by food and so she ate all the food to show her mom she appreciate her. this goes hand and hand with parents telling their kids to ea tall the food even if they're full or dont want more which can lead to unhealthy eating habits as adults. you should not judge someone for their weight, they may be going through stuff and judging them and shaming them won't do anything.
I'm not at a healthy weight, but I do want to start my journey as I'm not far from a healthy weight but being put down by my own dad ruins my motivation. i had starved myself multiple times and i had lost 30 pounds (1-3 pounds per week) when i was barely eating. negativity can hurt even if they think they're doing you a favor.
my boyfriend tells me I'm not fat and I'm beautiful. i appreciate him so much but i know not healthy, and i want to be leaner for my happiness and health. I've been having hard time with anxiety where i cant eat and it all. and its been affecting my eating as well as i use sweets to cope sometimes.

My son can do that. He is 16 and 6’ 2”. He can easily eat a whole large pizza on his own and he’s thin as a rail. If he played sports I know it would be 10x worse. Growth spurts and teenager boys in general usually eat way more than more. Well into mid twenties too though usually the metabolism slows down. As someone that suffered with anorexia and bulimia this really comes across as a binging behavior. I use to eat large amounts of “bad foods” or “good food” and throw up after or I would chew the food and spit it into a cup. I use to chew and spit foods a lot and even got so sneaky with this behavior I would do it at the dinner table with my parents. And they never did or said anything about it. I’m not trying to diagnose anyone or shame anybody. But these really are disordered eating behaviors no matter how you put it. Sure it very possible she can eat that much and doesn’t gain weight because her metabolism is insanely fast or she is very very active. But anyway you slice it eating in this way isn’t healthy physically or mentally.

I think saying live and let live is the best bet when you have a large fanbase and you don't want to upset too many people and be as least "offensive" as possible. No hate towards Jaime, I just prefer to listen to this kind of discourse when it's been thoroughly researched (not just the channel, but different EDs and how this might be promoting that). That night I took the donuts down to the river, had a cry, then threw them all in the river one by one. The confrontation was eminent now.
She was super pissed and didn't talk to me for weeks. A couple of years later she developed heart problems from high cholesterol and had a stroke. She then told me that she understood why I did it.

Binging is really unhealthy either way, but purging is generally unhealthy in a different way (dissolved teeth, digestive problems). Both also relate to serious psychological issues.
My question further along is, "Why do people WANT this to be genuine?" I really don't get it. Don't eat that way. She's probably faking or purging, but you don't have to know which it is to know that you don't want to eat that way. Food addictions are addictions.

I have the same wish! I used to be able to eat like this tiktoker when I was in my teens - early 20’s. I never exercised intentionally & easily maintained a 19.5 bmi. I ate pm the entire menu every time I ate out. I used to get 2 entrees when my bf & I went out on dates. When we ordered pizza, I’d eat an entire extra large pizza, a tray of pasta & half the dessert all by myself.
But looking back, I also ate very little about half the week without realizing. Half the days were eating 5000+ cals, half the days were eating 1000 so my weight was easily maintained. It wasn’t intentional - I was just following my hunger cues and the youthful metabolism boost definitely helped.
That all changed when I turned 25. Suddenly I couldn’t eat like that anymore. I had to exercise?? And watch what I ate??? Ugh! I think it’s partly genetic bc my dad had the same experience. It’d be such a dream to eat like my younger self again as I age while maintaining the low weight I had.
Tbh, I’m never impressed by these large appetites + small bodies unless they’re over 25 because the metabolic changes are real and hit hard.

Within a month, this person developed an eating disorder that was so powerful, it nearly put them in the hospital. Months of therapy later, this person is doing better much to my and other people's relief. It's been over a year, and while there is still lingering problems from the effect of these videos, it sounds silly to hear someone else say that these videos can have a negative effect on others, but it is true!

@@kittygoesWOOF I actually know a lot of people with anorexia that watch mukbangs are using the videos to keep themselves from eating. They basically pretend like they are eating what the mukbanger is eating, in their head to kind of suppress their appetite. People use these videos to inspire themselves to diet, I guess some people also get so disgusted by the amount of food on camera that it makes them sick and not want to eat. so in terms of what kind of ED? It depends on the person but a lot of people use these videos to harm their own eating patterns.

For me it works totally opposite. I can eat much less when I see a person who have eaten a lot. This is kinda strange, but it works for me. For example, I can make a nice dinner and if I will be alone I will consume a lot of that. But if someone will eat it with me and enjoy it, I can have few bites for try and I do actually feel full, I don't want to eat anymore. So, when I see a person who eats a lot, I don't feel my hunger, because my eyes say "oh my, that was a lot of food, we are full".

I had a friend in high school who would actually eat a lot like this and hardly gain any weight but she found out she had a heart condition that made her heart work 2x harder. After she got medicated, she instantly gained weight. I guess its possible??? But i dont know...

I had a friend who couldn't put on weight who had type 1 diabetes that weirdly didn't get diagnosed until well into adulthood. She gained weight when her body finally got insulin for the first time ever.

Wow that's kinda freaky. I mysteriously got skinny a few years ago and have chest pains a lot. Doctors weren't worried then though. They never seem to be worried about weight loss unless you're scary thin

Her eating like this is unhealthy

I just adore how reasonable and kind you are, besides all of the giggly reasons why I watch your videos.

It's not even how skinny she is BUT how flawless her skin is!
I look at anything greasy, I get launched back to my pubescent, acne days.

I have had a few friends in the past where they were ridiculously thin, and would eat an obscene about of food at school to the point I was concerned they were purging or otherwise, however, I came to understand later on that due to things in her childhood and her genetics she did not choose to be that thin. I'm not sure if it was a humble brag or she was just she was anxious about how she looked, but she hated how thin she was and was looking to gain weight. So yes, some people are just very thin and can eat a lot without purging.

My best friend growing up ate TONS of food and did everything in his power to gain weight, but was always super skinny. My step-dad was the same. Step had problems in his early thirties with cholesterol from all the food he ate (bestie was a vegetarian LOL) and was dead from a heart attack before 60.

My experience shows me that a lot of thin people bingeing online for content have bulimia and purge or starve for days after. I discovered this even before mukbangs surged during quarantine; started when some youtuber came out in the hospital with why they stopped doing those videos (they had a hole in their stomach from previous non-necessary illegal weight loss surgery and so never felt full) and it took me down a rabbit hole of binge mukbangers with eating disorders. I stopped watching stuff like that but I see these people on my recs sometimes. Of course I would never ask any one of these current content creators about it or put speculations in their comments (if I watched binge eating mukbang in the first place) because that’s their battle if there is one. It’s not any of my business-I’m not their doctor or therapist or family. I just don’t encourage it by not watching it to begin with. It probably doesn’t make a dent on their page but at least my conscience is clear. I’m not sure what other people get out of binge videos to be so particular about swallowing etc, but I do know a lot of people with eating disorders or restrictive diets live vicariously through these videos (or use them to soothe their guilt) so maybe that’s it? 🤷🏾‍♀️ In general, I just wish people would stop putting the well-being of themselves and others at risk for content all across the board. I only watch one food review person and he doesn’t usually overeat, and he usually stops when he’s full. Better than me; I still struggle with my own disordered eating so take responsibility for myself by minding the media I consume. I feel like people should enjoy food and try new foods and that’s what mukbangs and What I Eat videos should be about-not pushing your body to limits or shocking people. It’s very easy to compare yourself to others on the internet so I respect content creators who live their authentic lives and don’t make it easier for viewers to make unfair comparisons by being honest and forthcoming. But we never truly know who someone is behind the screen, so just watch what makes you feel good and improves your own life I say.

I wouldn't have thought it was possible before watching Beard Meats Food channel. He shows full videos of his massive eating challenges and he is stick thin. I absolutely LOVE your perspective on these types of videos. Balanced, no outrage, just interest.

He still manages his overall calories though, like not eating for a few days afterwards. He said he dieted for quite a while before starting his American tour of challenges, so even though he has a huge amount of calories in one sitting, over the course of a month it probably evens out as something fairly reasonable.

I could speculate about the whys and hows of what her body's doing with it all, but I think you're absolutely right in trying to unravel the "why do we have to watch? why are we mad that other people watch?" angle of these dramas. People decide they know what the trick is, they've called it (loudly! multiple times!) and they're... not done, they're back watching again in their millions. "curiosity killed the cat" doesn't even begin to touch this weirdness, there's not that even much to be curious about but it's trapped everyone anyway. And then the addictive feedback loop of viewcounts keeps creators making the addictive content - it's almost like lovebombing, which in the case of things like bodybuilders consuming 50,000 calories a day that sometimes can be because of muscle dysmorphia (usually men who desperately want to be bigger, associated with a very high suicide rate, and a very low interest in longterm health) is quite an alarming prospect.
I think the projected guilt over food waste is part of the allure generally. food usage obsesses us, it's up there with wealth and status, we want to police it.

I have a crazy big appetite too, but there’s no way I could eat all that without throwing up. I’d wager she throws up a lot after eating all that! I’d be surprised if not.

I just want to say thank you again for keeping me entertained while I am recovering from surgery. My only complaint is that it hurts to laugh and you make me laugh at least once a minute. Much love and light to you, your bird (idk it"s name, my bad) and your hubby
