    awesome tip!
    you end the (bp) phrase hitting target note on up beat. main enclosure hits target note on downbeat. why one or the other? that seems to make a huge difference.

      Good observation! Yes, Bud Powell changed the rhythm. This is a bit of an unusual example, because in many cases, the enclosure is used to set up a target note in a moving line of eighth-notes. In the case of this example, Bud Powell used the enclosure itself as a melodic phrase with a cool rhythmic variation at the end. Listen to the tune, "Dance of the Infidels" by Bud. It's full of surprising accents and edited phrases with that little surprise at the end of the lines. They're not enclosures in that tune, but it is a similar rhythmic device. I think of this shift to arrive at the target note a half-beat sooner, as an edited phrase. This is a beginning level video, so I purposely kept things simple, with the target note on the downbeat. However, if you want the effect of ANTICIPATING the upcoming chord change, you can actually move the entire enclosure a 1/2 beat sooner, starting it on an upbeat, which would arrive at the target note a 1/2 a beat earlier, as well. This is less common than starting on the downbeat, but it does happen occasionally. Another thing to consider...this is a bit difficult to discuss without a clear harmonic context (which I also purposely left out of this video). A more advanced video (planned for the future) will explore various harmonic applications of the enclosures. For example, the target note could actually be the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, b9, 9, #9, #11, 13, etc. of the chord. It all depends on what you're setting up as the target. In the end, you need to experiment with both ways, arriving on the downbeat and the upbeat, and go with the one that sounds best at the time.

    Great vid as usual. I have found that using the enclosures "backwards" works very well too. ex: (aiming at C) play B, Db, C. Is this something you do as well? I find that interchanging the "standard" (above-below-target) mixed with some "backwards" ones give some interesting variations of licks. Make sense?

      Hi Joe. Thanks! Yes, putting the lower neighbor first, then the upper neighbor, and then the chord tone -- (backwards) works, as well. Not as common, but nice for a change. Glad that you enjoyed the video. Please check out my video lesson course, now available on my website. Over 65 new videos, with detailed PDF lesson notes. gregfishmanjazzstudios.com

    Hi Greg, it´s Dave Guardala mouthpieces?

    • @GregFishman
      @GregFishman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, it's a "Stubby" Bobby Dukoff from the late 1940's. #5 facing. Similar to an old Otto Link, with a bit more rounded sidewalls.
