    This video has been so helpful to me. I have a Suzuki Van van 2019 and recently put brakes on it on the rear. End the brakes on the rear end. Look like they were brand new. I could have just adjusted it now. With this video, I'm able to adjust my brakes and get the most out of them. Thank you so much for this video. I really appreciate this.

    Thank you!!! I am new to bikes and have my 1st. I changed the rear breaks and adjusted the bolt on the spring to no avail. You’re video helped me fix it.

    Little note some bikes have a very strong spring as the return mechanism usually located behind the rear brake pedal. If it goes missing or snaps off the first thing you'll notice is the rear brake pedal will feel spongy as the spring on the adjuster at the end of the bar will be acting as a sort of return but will not be as effective although you should still have a braking effect.

    i just replaced the inner tube on my bike today and put the rear tire back on, only to find out that my rear brake pedal is going all the way down and not applying the rear brake. Does taht mean I need to adjust the Rear Brake Arm that you're talking about at 1:20? I took that arm off without noting where it was and just put it back on wherever it landed. Would it be possible that maybe I left something loose inside the rear drum brake?

    Hope you can help, Willy! Recently changed my chain and sprockets on a shadow 125. Since then been having issues with the rear brake. It's currently in a seeming 'constantly on' state. I can pretty much remove the brake rod adjuster nut and it still seems like it's applied. It's only a slight drag, but I can definitely feel it's pull on the power and, of course, the obligatory squealing.
    I've tried taking the brake rod lever off the spline as you've suggsted and repositioning so that the top of it is angled more left (my rear drum points the arm upwards, not down like yours here), but that almost seemed to make matters worse. I struggled to point it more to the right, but that seemed counterintuitive anyway so I put it back in it's original position - up and slightly tilted to the right. Wheel is as far forward as it will go, so, totally at a loss. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    • @RiderForge
      @RiderForge  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would start like this: first, lift the rear wheel off the ground. spin the rear wheel by hand. is it dragging or squealing? If so, completely disconnect the rear drum brake, either by removing the arm from the spline or just taking off that nut from the long arm that actuates the rear brake. now spin the wheel again, does it still drag or make noise? If so, the problem is not with your adjustment of the lever, but likely the drum brakes; were they taken off during this process and not installed correctly? Did you adjust the chain correctly when you reinstalled it? a chain that is too tight will make a lot of noise. If the problem disappears when you disconnect the rear brake you can now isolate your problem to rear drum brake adjustment.

    • @MrCaptainstern

      The brake lever doesn't return to the off position. I can gentle tap it back by hand but as soon as I apply the rear brake it sticks to the on position. Will take it apart again and clean out the inside of the spline and brake! Will report back ;)

    • @MrCaptainstern
      @MrCaptainstern 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorted! It was indeed the spline. Pretty solid so took some wonderjuice and a rubber mallet, hammered it out, cleaned and greased it up a bit and back in the saddle :D

    My rear brakes give off a squeaking sound whenever I engage it. Any easy fixes for that ?

    • @RiderForge
      @RiderForge  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had this issue in a car once with drum brakes; to fix it I carefully lubricated all of the internal parts with silicone spray without getting any on the brake shoe or the surface the brake shoe touches. An easy way to prevent that is by covering these surfaces with masking (painter's) tape because it does not leave a residue and comes off easily.

    hello great video! was wondering if you had any advice on re installing the front brake cable i cant get it to work properly..

    • @RiderForge
      @RiderForge  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert O'Donnell Loosen the adjuster nut at the brake lever as much as possible. Loosen the adjuster at the front brake as much as possible. Install the cable at the front brake first. Attach the cable at the lever last. Tighten the adjuster nuts to achieve proper play. If you're not sure how the entire assembly goes back together do a search for the repair manual using Google; you'll find it; it has photos. At the moment it is not possible for me to make more videos due to time constraints. Good luck! If all else fails join xs400.com and post photos with your question on the forums.

    • @robertodonnell3605
      @robertodonnell3605 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      chiangxiong thanks for the answer! I put the cable in the lever and at the front end first and then try'd adjusting it like that. That may have been my issue, i will check tomorrow. and I'm on xs400.com all the time! I doubt I would have been able to completely rebuild my bike with out it. People like you, and all the people on the forum are great, spreading your knowledge to people like me, its much appreciated. I was able to rebuild my forks thanks to your other video! it was extremely clear and comprehensive. Thanks for taking the time to help out!

    Have another adjustment to make so that the brake light activates on mine. My pedal was hanging really low, adjusted it so it was more level with the peg and the brake light stopped working, luckily there was another adjuster 😎

    How did the previous owner not realize he was destroying the case by having the pedal that high? Or did he actually take a tool and cut a chunk out of the case so he could have the pedal that high?
