No other music makes me so emotional than this Overture. Not only at the incredible genius of a 17 y.o., but because its magic keeps a steady musical climax with themes weaving throughout and progressing until the last note.

Chopin is also a prodogy.the achievement of the Midsummer Night's overture was considered revolutionary in those days.Chopin earliest compositions were based on folk theme and he made great arrangements out of them. His 2nd piano concerto written at 19 before his 1st because the ist piano concerto got published first has Hummel and Reineki style in it.The genius of Chopin is not fully realized till his piano etudes were published which totally revolutionize the way the piano is to be played after Beethoven.

thechico1979 This was also my introduction to classical music. 65 years ago I was 10 years old and at that time my parents had a wind up gramophone and an assortment of popular records of the 30s/40s. But then one day,dad came home from work with a couple of records that his boss had decided to get rid of and asked if I'd like them. One of them was A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was on a huge 78 rpm long player disc by Columbia and took up both sides. Up until then I had never heard classical music before but thought I'd give it a spin out of curiosity. But something must have struck a chord with me because I played it over and over again and it was this that was to shape my appreciation of music for the rest of my life...thankfully.

Something about this song, from the dynamics to the chords used to the clever usage of certain instruments only when they are needed, reminds me of some primal truth that I always forget and am reminded of, only to forget once more.
Suffering with chronic depression, I have a serious episode pretty much every week. And it's tormenting, agonizing, and if I let my mental state get worse then it will so I have to put tons of effort into self-care and all that jazz.
I often doubt my reasons for staying alive when in an episode, as I am currently, and it has always been a task of great difficulty to feel happy -for as long as I remember. This song reminded me what life is; life is just like a song. It has dynamics, dissonance, resolutions, an overarching structure, and really no meaning in it outside of the song itself. The song is what it is. And just by studying classical music like this, and really listening, so much wisdom about life can come out of it.
On the one end, the dynamics remind me that life has its ups and downs, and that's actually good, beautiful even. If the song had no intonation and stayed quiet the whole time then it would be boring. And if it was loud and jubilant the whole time, it would get old and the effect would wear off and that too would be boring, as well as exhausting. The ups and downs are necessary.
On top of that, you have the chords that were chosen so carefully. All of the instruments are playing different notes -just like all of the parts of our lives having an affect on us- and all it takes is one instrument to play a non-harmonic note and the whole chord goes augmented, or is a seventh or a ninth, and the entire emotional value of the chord changes. And the dissonance is required to set up a resolve. It makes you crave the resolve. And it gives you goosebumps when the resolve comes. When I'm in an episode I often forget what it feels like to not be depressed, but so often that resolving chord in my life does come right after an episode and I'm so happy I got through. Even if I know there will be another dissonant chord later, I know it's not about that. It's about the song as a whole, and the resolves and the beauty that is inherent.
Lastly, for the structure, I think we can see parts of our futures in everything we do, think, and emote. We're like blind seers. The beginning of the song, with the fast strings, hints to near the end. And when it came back to that part near the end, it made the beginning part make more sense, almost. Now that the song had gone all around in a vast adventure, only to return to its beginning it gives us a glimpse into the song as a whole. The structure holds a sort of significance that it hard to put to words. By looking into our childhoods, and thinking deeply about all of the things we've ever wanted, we can understand that there are innate parts of us that never change; despite wanting to be something different than ourselves, such simply cannot be. And once we understand that our lives are like a song, where it is what it is, then we can just listen to it and enjoy it, and try to play along. And maybe if we keep trying, we might finally understand the groove and harmonize with it rather than trying to play our own conflicting melody. I don't really know what happiness is, in the long term at least, but I think every part of life has something to tell us about our life as a whole. This song really impacted me, I suppose.
Then again, depression is a hell of a drug.

Man, I have the same exact problem.... the only way I can fix it temporarily is with weed, or me making music and pouring ALL my despair unto the piano. I will sit there for several hours...all this psychology bs about "just tell your feelings to someone." It's all bullshit and won't work, at least we're in this together. I have also noticed it's taken a huge effect of my social skills and gave me top tier social anxiety and now I've lost all my friends and now have nothing.

I think you might be smoking a little bit of the stuff the British used to export considering Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream was composed in 1842 and 1842 + 200 = 2042.

@@Samantha-vlly ok yeah I looked it up. We’re having confusion because he composed music for Midsummer Night’s Dream twice. He wrote music for the whole play in 1842 but he wrote this overture in 1826. So you’re right about it turning 200 years old in 2026.

I wonder what Beethoven and Schubert would have thought if they had seen this score. They both were still alive when it was composed in 1826, but never knew of it. Even Mozart, had he lived to a reasonable age of 70 would have been around for it, imagine his reaction to this 17 year old?!

As it was, Mendelssohn is a big reason the wider world knows of Schubert. It is said he learned of Schubert’s massive 9th Symphony (The Great) after he died, and had it performed in concert.

Felix Mendelssohn...I also agree that he is highly under rated as a composer. Not only do I love this piece of music, but also first piece I ever heard...the beautiful "Fingal's Cave Overture" and the one and only Oratorio, "Elijah!" Such a wonderful piece of music to hear and to sing! I know that he converted to Christianity at some point in his life from being Jewish. Those of you who have sung "Elijah" know what I am writing about...a beautiful and exciting work to sing again and again and again. I heard "Midsummer Night's Dream" when I was a young child and fell in love with it. So sad that he died so young.....think what he could have accomplished had he lived longer!!!
