Matt, when you are picking an old cellar with heating equipment you should wear respirators to protect your lungs from asbestos. It is very easy to disturb old asbestos and you probably wont even know you are breathing it in. We want you guys to stay healthy for a long time.
Matt Q: how do you come to a price when you end up with so much random stuff? What prevents you from unpacking a pile of stuff and the owner says $5,000 and you were thinking $1000 so you can't come to a deal?
Generally we do a phone call ahead of coming to a property and discuss that we are a business and need to buy things at a reasonable price and can’t pay “eBay” or “Hershey” prices. If they seem reasonable we just wing it and make a pile. If we can’t come together on a price we just return the item to where we found it. In some instances the sellers want us to price each item and we haggle over each item and add it all up. Other instances the sellers just want a bulk price on the pile and we negotiate a price that we’re both happy with. It’s fairly straight forward of a process in most of experiences.
Trashcan 🗑 Approved Installing and testing a new mechanical fuel pump in the 57 Catalina here this weekend. First time running on its own without a IV bottle in almost 30 yrs.
Matt explained that they had moved stuff to get something out a box behind it gave way dumping stuff and some breaking ! The hub caps was some of the items they bought ! I know sometimes stuff falls that you didn't touch because it wasn't stacked right in the first place ! I've been to a lot of places everything was stacked any which way that I refused to go through to see if anything that I might want in it ! Because I didn't want to have people mad about something getting broken or damaged somehow ! Just chill out most of it wasn't done on purpose !
The boxes of glass jars were soaking wet and as soon as we touched anything the boxes broke apart and glass fell to the ground. This is the hazard of picking in leaky old buildings and stuff pack ratted haphazardly…
There appears to be a theme on the pic sessions of the original enthusiast having died and the estate selling things off. Is that the trend in the US with pre war cars at the moment? In England the prewar car enthusiast is a fading breed. Prices are falling, projects are failing to sell even at the bargain end.
I love to see you guys rummaging through an old garage - it makes my garage seem tidy by comparison
