I had a separate track muted whilst editing at 8:55 so I forgot to delete my older narration💀💀 hope you at least enjoy the difference between the two for ~20 seconds
I'm not sure if you mentioned this, but there's some patches to fix the AI that make a huge difference in terms of how it was like to play it back then versus now.. and by patches I mean community patches as the last official patch broke it on the way out the door, and I am not exactly sure if there's more mitigation to do, I feel like the only way to find that out is to play it on original hardware.. as despite having 64-bit support in a rare twist, it's also very much a single threaded game and I'm not sure how much behind the scenes is affected by that... But I do know the patch broke it that Ubisoft last released in terms of how the AI functioned and transparencies etc. Also again like I said below, I know people don't care about this.. But for those that do, highly recommend changing the FOV to the default 4x3 FOV of 90 which is about 105 or 107 at 16:9, so the view model isn't cut off, it wasn't the best view model to begin with.. But it's much worse now that it's halfway cut off.
This video made me leave my wife during childbirth and play Far Cry instead. What I loved about Far Cry is how it combines the sci-fi elements. As opposed to most sci-fi games, Far Cry had just the right amount of futuristic aesthetics diverging not too far from the contemporary world. You're not an android, cyborg or some hi-tech suit-wearing overman, but a vulnerable little guy. The environment feels natural and real and the game graces you with a diversity of environment types: white beaches, dense jungles, caves, industrial sites, laboratories, swamps. The plot is written very poorly, but it makes for a very charming atmosphere. The game world would feel empty if those shoddy merc dialogs were not there. There's a lot of them so it's unlikely to listen to them all when playing for the first time. When I first completed the game it felt like an unforgettable adventure, especially considering how much I struggled with every single level as a kid even though I was playing on Easy. This is the best video on FC1 so far. Let this be a monument to that underrated gem. I'm glad my transcript could be of use! I wondered if anyone would ever use it.
Ty so much! the transcript was insanely helpful ngl, I almost wish I included more merc dialogues in the video but theres too many good ones to pick from haha
This was the first game that was installed on my own first PC. I was 10 back then and couldn't finish the game for several years, because I was scared of trigens. Only when I played "Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason", I was able to find a trick for my mind that helped significantly reduce my fear of horror games and I finally could finish Far Cry. After that I beated the game couple times on Realistic level of dfficulty. I wish devs had more time to finish last levels, especially Dam & Volcano. 12:57 I played this level tens of times, but never knew it had a patrol on a boat there.
Ah...I remember playing this game when I was 9-10 years old, when my dad bought the disk for me. It was the first single-player shooter I had played, and I really enjoyed it. Treehouse is where I started to get batshit scared though, and I had to ask my friends to play, who weren't as scared of the trigens as I was. I think the game is great for it's time, except its writing, obviously. What I enjoyed most about it is the sound design and atmosphere, these were the strongest points of the game IMO, I haven't seen anything quite like it in a long time. Whilst it's sad that the writing wasn't great, I do believe that if the devs spent a good chunk of their time on the story, I actually think it would've been good, because the premise is decent enough. Also, really well produced video, it's rare to see this type of quality with channels that don't even have one thousand subscribers, will definitely check out some of your stuff later on!
I grew up on this game, I replay it every year or so, I think it's an absolute disgrace that it's forgotten by the majority of Far Cry fans, and the few TH-camrs who do review it, often show the broken steam version only to shit all over it... truly an incredibly fun and pretty game full of character. Thanks for shining a good light on this piece of gaming history
Kind of a shame this game never got a true sequel. Doyle's last words seem like it was a set up for bigger things, but that obviously fell through when Crytek abandoned the IP in favor of Crysis. Like maybe The CIA would've been the bad guys in Far Cry 2 and Jack and Val have to stop them from weaponizing the new generation of TriGens. Would be interested in a remake for this game, but I don't know if I would want modern Ubisoft to touch it.
This deserves waaaaay more views, I enjoyed every minute of it. I couldn't agree more on every take you said and yes, the first Far Cry is really underrated. People only talk about how this game is too difficult or the cheesy dialogues or how the trigens ruined it (the same way aliens from crysis did) and I really disagree on it- hence, that's how I got this game stuck in my head since I played it back in 2006 or something like that. Thank you for this video, really

Far cry 1 is criminally underrated despite being an absolutely solid title, and i am fairly certain the patch 1.4 is the main reason for the game being completely forgotten.
@@gregorteply9034The enemy AI sees through tents and stuff. It requires a fix which can be easily found. PCGamingWiki is a useful resource to troubleshoot older games.
1:11:39 You have to move a few meters to trigger the next save point... but the real interesting thing is that there are always two cars. One seems to be put in to create the cut-scene and one is the actual one you drove and jumped over the barrier. None of them is driveable anymore which makes this even more funny.
I was literally just a few meters away from the next save checkpoint in that clip, it was really painful haha The two cars are kinda quirky, iirc they consistently spawn like that too so I'm surprised that it was never noticed during development
Amazing. Its clear that u put in a lotta work for this. Great video, made me remember all my fun times i had with my dad playing the game and it made me emotional. Even if it's kinda forgotten, for me and you and many more it is a part of our childhoods. Thanks for making this beautiful video

Far cry is probably my favorite game of all time, if I had to be pressed up against and make a choice.. when I played that demo I was just like this is perfection right here, this is the future, a shooter but you have autonomy, it's action and it's got mitigations like health and whatnot but it's also feels like a tactical shooter in that you have full mechanical control over your character for the most part.. I highly recommend adjusting the FOV if you're going to play this, as it seems the weapon model is severely cut off, I can't give easy instructions how to do this necessarily.. in terms of getting it like correct and beyond what the original 4x3 aspect ratio had, unfortunately because they have an extraordinarily complicated camera system that I haven't quite figured out.. But changing the FOV should be simple enough so that you're using essentially the same FOV that you would be at 4x3 and thus the ViewModel is not cut off. And as it turns out nobody cared lol and we would never see that until crisis, and that's it turns out nobody cared lol and we would never see it again. That makes me sad, there's an alternate future somewhere where this game gets the praise it deserves and change the future like it should have.
I've played this game in 2004 as a kid and I regularly play it every other year. I've also been playing custom made single player maps, some bad, some good. It's always fun. Hope they make a proper remake one day.
I grew up on this game and played an obscene amount of online deathmatch. Some community created maps are so burned into my memory I can recreate them flawlessly in my head lol since it came out around the same time you should also take a look at Crysis 1, it has a similar story of being influential but largely forgotten.
Incredible video - many thanks for your hard work!! Got this game in 2005 - and I prefer it to the Crysis games and to the other Far Crys. I didn't know about that Trigen cave in Tree House (with the dead scientists) - and the pre-release Val in a bikini looks so sexy ❤
