Roland must be a company full of engineers. And engineers are terrible at naming things (I'm an engineer) For the Roland updates, I am actually happy with this, mostly because I have a VAD506 with the VH14 - So the upgrade path exists for me to be "current" with their top model now by getting the new module, and the new snare I guess if I want to spend probably over $1k for the toggle. What prevented me from going to the TD50 module was the variable if they would add anymore more usb pads. It's not pressing for me to upgrade, but at least this is now an option. A pricey option, but still an option What this really signals is, there have been a lot of changes over the past decade, but I think we are getting to the point where phones are, meaning, you have your $1k phone and the new one is coming out, but do you really need to spend another $1k on a few more megapixels?
The main concern with those new inner rim pads is Roland is back to using proprietary mesh heads instead of regular ones. Because it doesn't look like those rubber rims don't look like they're part of the drum or shell. Also, let's give it to Roland to charge a premium for a module with a screen that's only 5% larger than the last one. If you stare at the screen close enough, you can even count the pixels. Screens are dirt cheap nowadays so there's no excuse for Roland to not use something larger, especially considering how much space there is on the module top.

3:52 To be honest, it simply feels like it’s high time for full strike location detection to show up-at the very least on the snare, on Roland’s newest and most expensive flagship kit! It’s a problem which Roland has had over 20 years to work on since it set the existing bar for “flagship” e-drum kits, and frankly it’s not bloody EUV lithography or something. Meanwhile the virtual snare strainer and the useful button 2:48 require no difficult engineering at all and could probably have been done a decade ago or more, or at least as soon as Roland moved away from a simple audio-jack interface for the snare.
i've never been a fan of ekits that try to look fully acoustic or kits that just look like full-on pancake pads. i like the size of the original strike pro and hart dynamics hammered shells. i want people to still recognize these are not regular drums, while still looking cool and unique
In the same vein as my previous comment, the flagship module is AU$4,800. Or you can keep your existing cheap module with USB and buy MacBook Air $1,800; multi out interface $700; SD or whatever plugin you like $400 = $2,900 If you really want quick live editing then purchase a mixing interface for another $800 will still bring you below the price of the one module and will give you infinitely greater flexibility and potentially much better sounds. Again, I understand the convenience of not having all those individual pieces but a slight convenience gain cannot cost 1000’s of dollars more.
I f you have a lot of money these upgrades are great. But really the electronic drums are now the size of acoustic drum ,what's the point. Your hauling more than a acoustic kit.
This review shows the new sensors. Thank you very much for mentioning that the TD716 is the only kit that has them. th-cam.com/video/UsGs_kCPThE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MkTlMQFLuqYUxbAO
Roland has obviously taken a lot from the DWe and incorporated into the new line. I think its pretty obvious now why they bought them out; they saw a real competitor to their kits.
Thank you. I watched all the release videos, and was still confused. I wonder if the new rims will affect stick longevity. I've had a td10 since new,.and only lost one pair of sticks
Have you played the Roland digital hi-hat, snare and ride? Migrating to those from a Yamaha DTX and later Roland TD17 made want to never go back. Nothing compares. Sadly still overpriced though.
Yamaha is behind now. They are still using cymbals they first designed in 2008 on their flagship kit. I love the DTX10 and 8, but Yamaha is holding back at the moment. They need to push harder.
Hi Justine, my man, I’ve been stuck deciding between the TD-27KV2 and VAD 507 for the last few months. Now that the new models are out, what are your thoughts? Is it better to go for the TD-27KV2 now ( and get on with drumming ) and upgrade later with better ones ( if at all ) in the future down the line since the VAD 507 might not be worth it now, especially with the VAD5xx series possibly coming next year and the new series ? or would you suggest to go with VAD507 even now. Here in India if i get VAD507 with its price i''m stuck with it for years. would it be a wise decision at this point of time ? also there's no way to try them out in stores here. TD 713 could be in my budget if i save a bit more but not sure if they ship to India. I really would love your thoughts. Thanks a lot. Love you so much! :)
Someting I'd like to know is, if I bought another brands kick pedal and trigger would it work on my set? I got a Lyx system because it was best price, but I don't like what they have for the kick and was wondering if the trigger units can be changed out to upgrade and still work or would are all the computer modules proprietary to the triggers?
I do wonder why someone would buy a full size electric kit with real shells to emulate a real size drum kit with full size shells haha . Aside from church drums or some handful of touring acts with silent stages most drummers I work for won’t swap yet .
Acoustic sized drums sell like crazy at music stores, that's why so many companies make them. But not everyone likes them, which is why roland still makes the TD series of pad based kits
Roland doesn't have Gretsch, Gewa bought the rights very recently. Roland does have DW though. Music companies buy and sell brands like crazy. I don't know why. The DWe is their electronic kit, and was release shortly after Roland bought them.
Hey Justin, I was wondering if you can make a video on "how to get the best rim shot sounds on edrum modules." I been looking for years, and, I just searched now, and there's no videos on how to achieve that high pitched harmonic scream like you hear in reggae songs. There's nothing rim shot related at all. I've tried to achieve it on my TD27 and digital snare and I don't understand the positional sensing. Maybe add a better explanation of positional sensing and what limits there are, or what is really possible. I'm not even sure if it's possible to achieve the kind of rim shots I'm looking for. I just know it's how I play, and constantly do rim shots on acoustic drums, then I just can't find it on my TD27. I'm pretty dumb though...lol....so maybe I just don't know what I'm doing, but a crash coarse/deep dive, would be great, and it will be the only video on the subject of rim shots on edrums if you made one. I'll assume lots of players would like a video about it. Have a great day !!!!! Just food for thought. Thanks !!! 👍😁👍
Thanks man! As for your reggae snare question, what I would do is find a sample pack of Reggae snare online that you like. Throw your favorite oneshot snare sample on an SD Card - import it into your TD27 module - and make it layer B on the snare rim of your favorite kit. You can then adjust the volume and I think the pitch so it blends in. You can even change how hard you have to hit before that sound comes in. I can't do a general video on "better rim shot sounds" because every drum module is different, and we can't all agree what the perfect snare even sounds like. But hopefully you have a starting point now on how to get a better Reggae type sound for your snare!
Damn! I just looked at the prices for these new Roland kits. My camper hooked up behind my truck is worth less than the flagship kit. I'll keep jamming away on my td-17kvx2 and my cheap acoustic kit I guess.
Yeah it looks like the mid-gen refresh of the 3. I don't think that kit sold well because it didn't have the hihat on a stand, so this new one fixes that :)
Gen 16 was a mess. And even though these cymbals are a whole different thing, the roll out has been a mess too. The truth is, Zildjian shouldn't have launched edrums this year. They should have spent more time getting the cymbals right, also adding more sounds/editing into the module. And then launched the line in 2025. That would have been the smart move.
@@BrettVano Just use a vst like EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer. I think one of the Alesis modules has BFD built in though, but it really doesn't matter if you're connecting to software.
@@BrettVano my favourite was the Pearl Mimic Pro while it was sold. (it's discontinued now unfortunately) Gewa also seems good, but I haven't played it extensively yet. eFnote is also said to be great. (Sounds decent, and same durability as Roland)
@@BrettVano If you want a wide variety of drum kit and instrument/effect sounds from traditional to modern, go Roland. If you want the drums to sound real, go Pearl Mimic Pro.
16,000 levels of dynamic range is only 14bit audio. For comparison, 16bit audio is 65,000 levels of dynamic range and is 4,000,000,000 levels of dynamic range(rounded to the nearest BILLION). Anyways, yay for math I guess.
Roland and Yamaha are the 2 best e-drum companies on earth. Efnote is catching up quickly because the founder of efnote used to work for Roland for decades (from what I’ve read). I’m Very curious about the new Roland kits...but the price tag will determine if I invest in a new kit or not (I’m not fond of mesh...too bouncy and unrealistic in feel).
Yamaha uses the same technology as 20 years ago , it has good quality like roland but nothing new since then at least roland has improved their hardware.

If you really want quick live editing then purchase a mixing interface for another $800 will still bring you below the price of the one module and will give you infinitely greater flexibility and potentially much better sounds.
The new monetisation sucks, additional payments for sample sets on a €2500 module? No thanks.
This review shows the new sensors. Thank you very much for mentioning that the TD716 is the only kit that has them.

Roland has obviously taken a lot from the DWe and incorporated into the new line. I think its pretty obvious now why they bought them out; they saw a real competitor to their kits.
Your the first person I thought of when I just saw Roland Vdrums range, well done thanks ❤😂❤😂
I like the snare and 10mm pads on the Alesis pro. The toms look like they come from the Alesis Strata Kid.
I'm happy to see Roland still makes the smaller kick drums. I got into eDrumming so I could pack the kit in a couple of hockey gear bags!
Thanks for the video! All the important info and well presented, cant wait for a review!
Great video bro. The tech just keeps on getting better hey !!
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
Is possible to use the zildjian alchem e cymbals with that kit. They feel better than rubber cymbals.
Thank you. I watched all the release videos, and was still confused.
I wonder if the new rims will affect stick longevity. I've had a td10 since new,.and only lost one pair of sticks
Great roundup Justin. Those new VAD 716s look brilliant.
FINALLLY roland has a new flagship just in time for me to want to upgrade!
I prefer yamaha. Cheaper for same quality
Hey thanks man! The TD27KV2 is fantastic, if it's in your budget I'd just buy it. We don't know when Roland will update to new kits.
Justin is the kind of guy you'd want your daughter to come home with.
Hm, Ralf from Drum-Tec (not anymore) playing at Roland.
Good idea them getting Ralf fo do the demo! 😁
oh yeah , he's the king of edrum demos, shreds every time
@65Drums for sure bro! Great video as usual 😁
Just the pedal? Yeah any pedal will be fine. Even kick drum pads from other companies will work with the V71 module.
Since roland bought DW and in turn Gretsch you’d open they will make some great cross over kits
Roland doesn't have Gretsch, Gewa bought the rights very recently. Roland does have DW though. Music companies buy and sell brands like crazy. I don't know why. The DWe is their electronic kit, and was release shortly after Roland bought them.
Hey Justin, I was wondering if you can make a video on "how to get the best rim shot sounds on edrum modules."
I been looking for years, and, I just searched now, and there's no videos on how to achieve that high pitched harmonic scream like you hear in reggae songs.
They way I look at it is the same way I look at Lambo unveil videos. Love to see it, super entertaining, but I personally can't buy one.
Great video! Also, EfNote is releasing new drumkits which sit between the 3 and the 3X, although I don't know about pricing.
Yeah it looks like the mid-gen refresh of the 3. I don't think that kit sold well because it didn't have the hihat on a stand, so this new one fixes that :)
Any new hints on the cheaper Roland VAD 500 series?
Gen16 mics/mounts were updated almost immediately.... you'd think they wouldn't mess up the mic/trigger/mount immediately on their next model too.
13:13 I think you meant triangle thing, not pyramid
hey bro can i ask when is the release date
Any idea on when new VAD5xx models could be coming out?
Probably not until next year. But with Roland you never know
Ralph is always impressive.
Thanks Justin!
Tomorrow, Yeah
Two Words: Mimic Pro
It's been discontinued by Pearl from what I hear. Love that module though
@@65Drums You think cause of poor sales? Cause it's a superb module for sure.
One word: discontinued
@@borrago Justin just informed me of that. Shame, it's a great module.
Does this Roland model finally sound like real drums or is it the same old processed junk?
As a newbie to edrums, what is your favorite manufacturer for sound? Or pick a couple if you don't have just one.
@@Corbrwl The V71 sounds real
I prefer the Yamaha silicone pads to mesh. I’m so used to them now that I’d be hard pressed to switch back to mesh.
Literally just bought a TD-27, and now the TD-50 is on sale for the same price I bought my TD-27 😂🥲
I just bought a nitro max 😐
Wow. That sucks. Been there
