I think the rainbow charizard is a bad example because during the pandemic that card did go up to $200 but now that all the focus has shifted to alt arts there just isn’t demand for rainbow cards anymore.

That's not true. The burning shadows rainbow Zard was released and everyone at that time thought the ReshiZard was going to do the same thing. At first the burning shadows Zard was like $200. That didn't last long and then when Unbroken Bonds came out people were hyping the ReshiZard as if it was going to follow the same path. It did not. At all. It's not just because rainbow rares aren't that sought after, it's because it's a tag team card that doesn't focus on Charizard and given that it's not an alternate art, it's just not that desirable, especially given that it will always be second to the burning shadows Zard lol I can tell you weren't collecting then
The Blastoise is a good example of why the ease of grading matters. There are 18 psa 10s, and 293 psa 9s. The last psa 10 sold for 12x the average psa 9 value. When it’s hard to get a 10, there are way more 9s, so it becomes a psa 9 oversupply issue
There's an old saying in financial markets, "Markets can stay irrational for longer than you can stay solvent." Same thing with collecting. Can't always make a decision on what makes the most sense or what is most logical at the time. Sometimes it doesn't make sense but must have foresight to be able to recognize the trends and the winners as they begin to emerge. Not easy. If it could be easily taught then everyone could do it, but it can't.

That would be something like Latias & Latios GX, Mario Pikachu, Scream Mimikyu. Those have gone up 2,000%

Really a good point is that there are some cards that should have a higher price. I have the 2019 POKEMON SM BLACK STAR PROMO SM226 CHARIZARD PSA 10. There are only 179 PSA 10 copies and a total of 2,780 graded cards. But the price doesn't follow this rarity. I'll just keep the card because it's so hard to get.
It is always simple supply and demand dynamics that determine the value of a card. Yes the grey felt hat pikachu is more expensive at the moment, because demand is considerable higher than the blastoise. But as a collector If i had $150 I would buy the blastoise full art way sooner than the pikachu. There is no urgency to collect the pikachu, the population of that card will continue to grow and grow in the following years. I think that is something people miss with modern. Ask yourself this question, Will demand for the gray felt hat pikachu be higher in 5 years than what it is today? Because that is what will need to happen for the card to go up in price.

I seem to remember a similar time when people said red’s pikachu would never go up as there were 1ms of copies , last time I looked it is going for $65 from like $2 at the time . I would be interested to see the Charizard illustration card in 5 years . I think it’s got legs on it to $20

Not a "waifu" card plus Pokemon Breeder was released in English. Sightseer never was. Japanese collectors seem to love the cute girl cards.

Well if card which goes for 75 dollars goes still for 75 dollars in 5 years it actually declined in value cause of the inflation. Cause 75 dollars in 2019 is the same value as 90 dollars in 2024 if you consider inflation rates between those years. So it basically stayed the same in nominal value but lost like 20% in real value, cause 75 dollars is just has much less value and thus even much less purchase power than it had in 2019.
The overall economy plays such a fundamental role here
A card I'm still surprised hasn't shot up too much in value is the piplup secret rare from Cosmic Eclipse with Dawn on it. Which is good with me since I love being able to afford cards with great art

You’ll never be able to control what cards end up being highly valued, let alone what sets Pokémon decides to reprint, so you might as well go after the cards you really like. If something does seem really cool or unique compared to the rest of a set, maybe try and get it and you might get lucky.
Great thoughtful video, Jake! I really like deeper considerations of these things. It does make sense that this balance you’re describing is hard to achieve let alone pick. Not one extreme can guarantee winners. It’s perhaps why cards that do better need to really resonate with us personally but then give us a bit of a chase that are more likely to achieve this balance. Rather than just assuming something will do well because it’s a Blastoise or Charizard. Perhaps the next Eeveelution heavy set may fall into this trap, no matter how much I love the Eeveelutions.

Solid video to have in the new year! Expectations have been high for the last few years but the market right now is fantastic and it’s great to get awesome cards for cheap to add to a collection.
I liked seeing specific examples though there are obviously tons of other situations where cards have done the opposite. It’s a tough game keeping up with the market!

Sometimes people just want a card because it sells for the most. I remember people selling Nintendo games to themselves for ridiculously high prices, tricking people into thinking the Nintendo games were dramatically spiking in price, then the prices crashed because no one actually wanted the games because they liked Nintendo, they just wanted them to try to make money.
I thought they had to buy a certain amount of packs in order to get the Grand Prix Charizard? It was limited only in Japan and then went worldwide.
I think long term this is relatively true but there are short term windows of opportunity dealing with playability of cards and fad buyouts which buoy card prices for months at a time. I know that is still a fraction of cards but I find that ebb and flow really interesting to follow and try to predict
Not sure if cheap is the right word because when I think cheap, I think of primes and some ex/lv.x cards being under 30... not 90+ dollar cards. Guess it depends on your budget, haha.
Hype is a factor for sure. It's sometimes hard to get a handle on just how many of a card there is.

the reshiram charizard rainbow card has good potential, chase card with low pull rate and a lower pop compare to most alternate art, some day ppl may want to collect rainbow rare cards and it will explode as being the chase card of one of the lowest printing tag team set. many psa10 alternate art now is almost same as the price of a near mint raw copy of the card or just raw card price plus grading fee.
In summary: print run size + attempting to speculate singles.

Do a video on why 1st edition base set machamp will never go up unless its missung the 1st edition logo to be a print rare since the 1st edition was a print error but their are more of those cards then anything that the base sset without it would be rare since it was supposed to be base set and only 1 in a million probaly exsist

I like how you explain pop grade report. I've been looking at pokemon pop too but there is millions(more like 100s million) of collector vs sports cards. So is 4k still high pop?

I got a 151 ultra premium collection box as well as the promo cards that come in the box as singles. Should I open the box or keep it sealed??
I’d say open, save packs, and enjoy singles. The box just takes up too much room. Same with ETBs but if it’s a “pokemon center” 151 ETB it might be worth keeping sealed. If it’s not, save packs, enjoy the promo, and use or save sleeves. But that’s just me.

@@karl343 sitting on product for years and years is simply speculation, not investing. if they want to "make money," you buy low and sell high now* rather years ahead. or buy low, get graded, and sell higher, but even that requires eyes on specific cards only.

yikes I understand saying over estimating a card value is a normal thing but to say that some cards will never attain value .......... imo feel that statement is not accurate .... cards go up and down even if it's a penny it's a change lol 😅 and cards always change value through the years mostly go down . but other than the never word I agree with this video just never say never lol
Base set unlimited Charmander has been under $1 for the past 25 years for example.
I think Jake is trying to point out an actual "tangible" difference here. You might have bought base set unlimited packs (we all did) back in 2000/2001 and have , let's say, 200 cards of common charmanders, caterpies and rattata. Yes, back then they were worth basically nothing. These days, if you have them in prestine condition and sell them online, you might net let's say up to £1 per card. Great. It took you 25 years to make 200 pounds. Percentage as well as the actual nominal increase is what matters here. The crazy thing is that sealed booster packs (like the aforementioned base set booster pack) goes for about 100x its original price which is ridiculous.
