European airlines _desperately_ needed a plane for shorter routes because the BAC 1-11, the Hawker Siddeley Trident and the Sub-Aviation Caravelle weren't sufficient for shorter range passenger growth. The result, especially when the CFM56 engine became available by 1979, was something that could match the Boeing 727-200 but with way lower noise, fuel burn and emissions. The result was the A320, which became operational in 1988.
