In Gothic Armada 2, one of my favourite tactics is to have four or five Dauntless' as an independent roving pack of ships away from my main body with a Frigate or two to spot targets. They're quicker than most Imperial ships, are pretty tough ships and can absolutely smash enemy ships. They hit pretty hard when ramming as well.
I had one battle recently where they were apart from my main force and encountered two Chaos Battleships. Because they're pretty vicious little things, they took down one themselves before my main force of Cruisers joined in to destroy the second one. What looked like a situation where my fleet would be surrounded turned into my forces absolute routing the Chaos fleet. And the Dauntless' that basically turned the battle all survived, although pretty badly damaged.
There's something satisfying about watching my 'weak' little Dauntless' circling a ponderous Battlecruiser or Battleship while absolutely battering it to pieces.
