Update on Liam the GIANT Belgian Draft Horse saved from almost being sent to slaughter-3 weeks later

If you are new to our channel, I came across a post on Facebook from Bowie Texas Livestock of a giant Belgian gelding (18.1 hands tall) that had just come in from a farm in Kentucky. There was a chance that this horse came from the same farm our original 6 Belgian Draft horses came from. When I told Cory about this giant boy...much to my surprise he said we should rescue him. I ran it through the board members and we decided to save him!
Liam (Lot# 9714) will be the second rescued Belgian Draft horse under the Big Hoof Foundation. The original video of Liam from the livestock yard showed that he was having some issues with his front legs. When we picked him up on Monday April 3rd, he could barely walk!
On the way home from the livestock yard, we stopped at Claude Veterinary Hospital to have him evaluated. X-Rays showed that he had sever arthritis in his front leg and Dr. Amber was worried he was foundering. One of our other horses Cami, has sever arthritis as well. We take her to our other veterinarian (Mobile Veterinary Practice) for steroid injections and they have helped her tremendously. We made an appointment for Liam to see Dr. Waggoner at MVP to see what treatment she thought would be the best for him. This is an update video on Liam, his vet appointment at MVP and his first 3 weeks of retirement on the farm.

I just think it's fascinating that the cat is laying on the horse's tail and that the cat is already so fond of this horse and the horse does not mind the cat. Amazing animals. Both of them.
The cats are brave! They rub on the horses legs and I’m always so scared they are going to get stomped.
My horse has a cat that hangs out with him and sleeps on his hay when he eats. He does not tolerate cats around his legs.
Liam is so trusting. I think he knows you are trying to help him. He has such a beautiful spirit. I hope Liam responds to his treatment so he can have a happy retirement.

What die you do to him? He has much more pain in his frontlegs, than at the beginning. He has to much and to good food, if he has that thickness in his hoofs. Maybee you gave him also some medication that makes it worse and he needs to cool his hoofs with water.
I’m a cat person. It is reported that the “musical” frequency of a cat’s purrs will stimulate healing. Kinda like the theory of good symphony music leading to good mental calmness. I do find a cat’s purrs to be very soothing and peaceful. Best to Liam and all.
When Cory was cleaning Liam’s hooves and you were comforting him, Liam was taking every second of that in. I do believe that was the most pure and potent medicine for his soul. He took that in like no other. I think that is most healing. Awesome stuff.
You found the right words for this touching moment. It gave me a warm feeling to watch him enjoying love and care of his humans.

Grumpy Nanny, most all draft horses are gentle. Our 8 year old Shire mare is like a giant puppy. We've had her since she was 4 months old. She's 2200 pounds and 17 hands tall. It's weird that our 8 years old Morgan mare eats more than our 8 years old Shire mare. We've had both since they were 4 months old.

I don’t know how the farriers are that you use, but the Idaho Horseshoeing School does fabulous work on horses with serious foot issues. It seems that they take care of a lot of neglected horses. If you need special help maybe you could talk to them? Thanks for saving these big guys and girls!!

I'm not a horse person, but I was under the impression that horses don't like you fiddling with their feet. I thought they tolerate the farrier, but they're not crazy about it. This big boy just sprauled out & made himself comfortable while you cleaned out his feet! 😂 Also, Liam dunking his hay in water before eating it reminds me of a little kid dunking a cookie in his chocolate milk before eating it! 😂 Liam is a beautiful boy. I'm so glad he's in your care.
It is easier to eat for an old horse they loose their back teeth an hard to chew so we all soak their hay an grain to a mash an shld just be on mash and feed three to four times a day and about 2 to 3 lbs each serving I had one line to 35 he looked great but he got old an just died. He was beautiful. God blessed me with the time an the love to care for cate dogs horses even oylther people's children I have raised. I am a giver God Bless you all for you being a giver too. This is a lot of hard work but God has given me things all that I said I would NEVER even get a year they were so bad off ?!!well I have soaked feed an hay for years an those really badchorescall lived to be close to being 40

He's a Belguim horse - its their build - they are draft horses. Not like our small (by comparison) saddle horses.

I think he walked a little faster when he got out of the trailer because the vet office might have have reminded him of the sale barns and he was glad to come home to his familiar stall.
I think he was feeling better too.
How this gentle giant enjoyed the hoof care. And how relaxed he is with you next to his head petting him gently! Watching this peaceful scenery was really heartwarming. Fingers crossed some orthopedic "shoes" will help this kind guy. After years of hard work with little or no health care he must already now feel like in paradise. Looking forward to the news about the two new inhabitants of the farm!
Yes, we are having an issue finding his size in shoes 🤣 I need to reach out the the company that makes them and see if they will make him a custom pair. He’s 8.5x9…most of them stop at 8 🤦♀️ we are going to do everything we can for him!

I'm so glad you did an update on him! No wonder it looked like founder if there was arthritis in the coffin bones! I'm surprised his hooves are in good shape & thank goodness no founder! Yay! He's such a big sweet beautiful boy! I've been wondering what happened to him & when there were no updates, I got worried. So thank you for posting. I wish I could come help you groom them but am too old now but grooming was one of my favorite things. 😊❤

But we are so grateful to our vets and all they do for our horses. We will do everything we can to keep him comfortable.

Liem is so cool! He is just eating up your attention besides everything you put in front of him. I love how he lays down & stretches out while he gets his feet cleaned out. He totally trust you both! Having his feet done could help ease his pain. Giving him shorter feet but proper angles. Shoes in the front might help as well. He sure is a big boy! Gentle big boy! I hope you can get the pain under control. I have arthritis it can be a bugger but other time it's OK! So it is possible! Be watching for up dates!
Glad to hear you're going to get his feet trimmed. It could shift the pressure points on the joints just a fraction, which can make a difference to the pain.

He might need padded boots and Im sure you know with overgrown frogs they can get a fungal issue on either side of the V deep. Your farrier can open those areas up so you can treat..
I love his trusting gentle nature. Wonder if his weight might be adding to the strain a bit. Just adore a horse willing to be cared for.

We have looked into boots but I need to call the boot makers because his hoof is so big they don’t have his size on the website. But I was thinking if I reached out to them they might make a custom pair. We did get medication for the frogs. It did look like a fungal issue. We have lots of plans to help this boy. Having the farrier out is next on the list.

Oh my goodness, I’m a cat person ( I have 3 feral rescues tamed) and I did a double take when I saw the cat snuggled into Liam. I hope the cat purrs to Liam, as there are Therapeutic benefits from cat purrs. Liam is so very gentle. He’s adoreable. I love your feeding set up too for Liam. Glad that the mom and baby that went to Marks farm are both doing well. Love💗🌠

1800+ lbs, 18+ hands = a whole lotta beautiful horse! His size was well demonstrated when he was being led into the vets barn...and then seeing how tiny the vets hands looked next to Liams hoofs! Bet this handsome guy puts off some serious warmth during snuggle time!❤️🐴

18.1 hands!!! He's filled out pretty good on the coastal. Glad you elevated his bowl. It was clear in the first video that between his height and the pain in his front feet that dropping that massive head and neck of his was a problem. He's looking great.

Julie and Cory, it's so heart warming that you guys are giving all these wonderful animals a new life of love and care instead of constant hard work neglect and pain. They cannot speak to tell us of their suffering but their bodies and faces tell us how happy they finally are now that they are being valued for who they are. Liam is a beautiful horse with such a noble and gentle face. He seems to just soak up all the love you give him. I admire the courage you have to rescue these often badly abused animals. As we saw with Lucky, it's devastating when they can't be saved. It takes courage to knowingly go ahead and take these risks . So glad you do.
