    Good review Paul. Except for a couple of “poor fit” in the centre console armrest, the S60 is a very sleek looking sedan. It’s amazing how much sedans have grown in size over the last few years. TheVolvo S40 was the direct competitor to BMW 3 series (E46) and the Mercedes Benz C Class (W204).

      @@mharro88 I've handled lots of 3 series and S60s. I think they outclass BMW at almost everything except narrow turns and performance breaking.
      The 3 Series simply cannot compete with S60 wide banking, slalom, and most other handling methods. They are much tighter, which is a preference for northern climate.
      3 Series is a gorgeous car. Falls short as a long term commuter.

    I know not many of you would remember but there was a time a Center Console really was one of the coolest features of a passenger “SPORT CAR” and a 4dr Center Console was like a needle in a hay stack back in the day. Bucket seats any a console in a passenger Wagon was also extremely rare. People were a lot more practical and wouldn’t give up a seat for a sporty looking bucket seat. In the 1980’s is when the Buckets became common place with consoles. Ford Taurus is one example.

    Good review, @CarExpert
    We had a loan of a T5 Inscription over the weekend from a Volvo dealer when we were shopping around for a car, and the T5 R-Design was on the shortlist. (They had an Inscription for loan) We found the S60 excellent for how we'd use the car with 2 young kids. It would have been very easy to live with, with lots of little features (like the B-pillar air vents for the rear passengers, why doesn't every carmaker do this?) that shows the designers thought about how people would actually use the car.
    Like you report, we found the car sure-footed, comfortable and pleasant to drive. The cameras and good visibility make it easy to park, and there is plenty of interior space.
    I did test drive the T5 R-Design at a later date, but found that when compared to the competition, the S60s tended to be heavier, and so power-to-weight suffered. That would have been fixed with the T8 R-Design, but I didn't have the extra money. In the end, I went with a different car, as the S60 T5 R-Design wasn't "silly" enough for what I was looking for.

    As a family who have owned Volvo, BMW and Mercedes I have to say Volvo is by far the comfiest (maybe not the best handling but for long drives there’s no comparison) best looking inside and out, but I’m wary of the S60 being US built if American built BMW and Mercs are anything o go by. another objection :) there's one cool journalist in my country, he's also a rally driver and he has a dedicated track where he tests the cars. if I remember well, in his top 3 quickest cars there is an SUV (Stelvio Quadrifoglio). Nowadays SUVs drive pretty well. They are not primarily for crazy sport driving, but their limits are far beyond limits of most of the drivers. If someone thinks SUV is a sports car and drives dangerously like an a-hole, it's not problem of the car.

      @@CarMojo The problems are not generally when the driver gets over enthusiastic - its when the driver suddenly finds themselves in an emergency situation and tries to take evasive maneuverers.
      Its one thing that bugs me most about car reviews - lots about the trinkets and acceleration and all the marketing spiels, nothing about the inherent traits that may save your life one day, or about inherent flaws (ie a high centre of gravity...) that might kill you when things go pear shaped.

    • @CarMojo
      @CarMojo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@froggy0162 cars (including SUVs) can handle emergency situations better than most of the drivers with theirs limits and driving skills. if there is enough time (distance vs. speed), SUVs too can handle most of what driver needs. but when something suddenly crosses your path, right in front of you (like in my cases), handling of your car doesn't matter, because during that split second from the moment you realize the danger until the collision you'll probably manage to let your feet off the gas pedal. then extra height and bulkiness of a SUV can be the only thing that protects your health/life.
      apparently you don't like SUVs, but people do, for various reasons, and they wouldn't buy them if they were coffins on wheels.

      @@CarMojo You missed my point again. Its simple physics, all things being equal higher COG means higher risk of rollover. Its not my opinion, its reflected in road trauma statistics - you are simply more likely to die in an suv.
      I dont like them - they are less safe, less efficient, less space efficient, poorer handling, more dangerous to pedestrians. etc etc... They are all image with no substance, a triumph of marketing over common sense. People buy them because they buy into the marketing and myths around "size equals safety" - reality rarely gets a consideration.

    • @CarMojo
      @CarMojo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@froggy0162 I see that CoG and rollovers is your mantra here, ignoring the fact, that when you're not a total a-hole driver ignoring limits of the car, you'll not roll over an SUV, at least not that easy as you try to suggest. Since 2012 ESC (reduces rollover risk) is mandatory. According to Consumer Reports, majority of 6,800 occupants killed in rollovers in 2010 were not wearing seat belts (it's more about unresponsible people rather than the car).
      But you consider things too general. Are SUVs less safe? well, are there SUVs with 5* NCAP? yes. are there sedans/hatchbacks with 2-3*? yes. are those 3* sedans safer than 5* SUV? the same for pedestrian safety. CoG is not the only thing, you can't ignore structure, materials, etc...
      the same for handling. there are SUVs that handle better than some sedans/hatchbacks.
      efficiency? take e.g. toyota hybrids (yes, even RAV4) vs. non-hybrid sedans... but even some non-hybrid SUVs do have better fuel consuption that this S60. unless you claim, that CoG is more important than engine's thermal efficiency.
      less space efficient? another bs. I had 4.40m long SUV, boot space over 520L, I could fit there (among other things) bike with 20" wheels without removing them (b*tch please, sedans) and my wife had full comfort on the back seats.
      Finally, in car vs. SUV head-on crashes, the study found that the odds of death were 7.6 times higher for the car driver than the SUV driver.

    Volvo might make some nice vehicles but they sell so few in Australia. And with such a small customer base maintenance and spare parts are expensive. Warrantee work and recalls through a tiny dealership network is not good either and training people in the dealerships will be limited by the low funds available through the importer/distributor. And who will buy it from you when you want to get a new vehicle? Resale value will be low. All round buying a new Volvo in Australia is not a good idea.

      Such a narrow minded comment & totally incorrect. Volvo been in Australia forever and very well established here. 6,700 sales in 2018. 7,800 sales in 2019. Covid issues aside, all of their cars r popular & selling well. More models etc on the way. Volvo r extremely well funded by their parent owner Company. Dealers in all capital cities & many other places etc. They r not as big as some, such as BMW, but their vehicles r highly recommended by those in the know.

      Wire Rubbish Bin Correct. I mentioned Covid because it has caused a big downturn in new car sales so far this year. 442,000 cars sold to June 30, 2020 compared to 555,000 sales in first 6 months of 2019. A drop of 20% , 110,000 vehicles. Covid caused factory closures etc and delays in cars getting shipped to Australia and many other countries. In this very difficult situation, Volvo still doing very well with sales here. No brands will have a brilliant 2020. Covid will affect the economy etc, and new car sales will b down for a while, but will bounce back in due course.

      Wire Rubbish Bin Toyota sell over 200,000 cars per year in Australia. The next closest is Mazda / Hyundai at close to 100,000 annual sales. Toyota dominate the market here. Ur comment that Volvo does not sell in same volume as Toyota is absolutely hilarious. Volvo r more expensive then a comparable Toyota. U r paying more for a thoroughly engineered vehicle with quality and substance. This is also the case with BMW / Audi etc. Skoda Kodiaq is a great car. The Octavia is great and all new model Octavia in Australia next year. But Skoda don’t sell 200,000 cars in Australia either, so on that basis, then of course don’t buy one. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️. Like Volvo, Skoda sales continue on a big upward curve in Australia. Anyway. Go ahead and buy a Toyota coz a lot of other people do. This thought process clearly confirms ur lack of personal confidence and stupid narrow mindedness.

    DO NOT BUY A VOLVO! I am the current owner of a 2019 S60 T6 Inscription and the vehicle has been a complete nightmare. It is plagued with quality issues and has been in the shop more than all my previous cars were combined, I am in my late 30’s. Worse of all, dealing with the Volvo dealership network and Volvo USA has been even a worse experience. Endless circle of taking the vehicle to the shop to have quality issues and defects documented then calling Volvo USA for resolution but receiving no courtesy or care. I bought a $60k piece of crap that I do not even trust to drive more than 30 miles from my house. Asked them to buy it back or forgive my loan, would not. Asked them to give me a replacement vehicle, would not. Even though I have a service record the thickness of a dictionary on a car with 33k miles on it. They do not care about their customers unless they are selling you the car, after that you are on your own!
