went in expecting to be scared, ended up invested in a story about a child struggling with regret and grief over past mistakes. genuinely puts most scary minecraft stories to shame
I watched the first episode late at night and when Alex started talking about seeing his friends rotting corpses, I waited to watch the rest until the day time; I expected it to get really spooky and stuff. Then I watched it all the next day and ended up violently sobbing. :(
Fr! I feel like some of the best ARGs are things that have a story to tell My two favorites are Don't Look At The Moon And Ben2Fr (Better known as Found Footage of a Player Being Followed) These two make me tear up everytime I watch the analysis videos and are so incredibly unique and special to me
i like the detail of matthew "dissapearing" briefly when alex talks about his project partner, showing that his loneliness kind of faded in that moment. his project partner ending up being donny was also a very cool twist.
Alright here's my take: Matthew was Alex's real friend who died (possibly in a house fire due to the burning village house). In grief, Alex pushes his remaining friends away and his family eventually moves. Either Matthew's spirit haunts the game or Alex creates his own manifestation of Matthew to cope. But after finding Donny, he starts to realize that it’s time to move on and let his friend go. And so he leaves one last goodbye to Matthew. Always value what you have. You'll never know how good it is until it's gone.
Also the name Donnydark0 is a reference to the movie Donnie Darko, a movie about a troubled teenage boy who begins to see visions of an imaginary friend. The movie is also about time travel. This could be a reach but it makes sense.
I think I’ve nailed it, Matthew was the players friend in a friend group, one day they argued about the wood used to make the roof and got off, that night Matthew died in a house fire (the constant references to death and waking up, Matthew saying “I can’t just wake up” and the fire that’s seen) after this death he felt really bad because the last thing they did together was argue about the roof, he pushed himself away from his friend group and eventual moved. Matthew is what render said he was in the video, his imagination of his friend comforting him. He then makes a new friend, this is where Matthew starts to fade as he begins to get over Matthew’s death, in the end finally accepting his death to where Matthew can be let go
"birch is pretty nice" 5 am, havent slept, and im crying, i cant believe someone managed to make such a series about loss and depression, coping with it, the manifestation of grief, and finally moving on all with minecraft
@@fjordivae3007 even as I watch it at 8 pm this story is so amazingly beautiful, the subtle nuance of the transition from someone clinging onto the past to accepting the future and paving new roads was so satisfying
This guy is a genius for thinking of such an intricate and detailed story. I personally think that Matthew is Alex himself and he is just talking with himself in the form of schizophrenia to feel less lonely. In Alex's video, Matthew types, "And I just can't wake up." but in Donny's video it is Alex who says that which further proves my theory. Truly a mastermind.
This is probably my new favourite minecraft Arg. It's not cryptic or complex or a cut-and-dried black player that stalks the character in minecraft beta that we've all come to expect by now. No supernatural monsters, no mysterious and malicious stalking players, no crazy winding paths of random spooky images with cryptic codes in them, no haunted worlds. Just a genuinely interesting and simple story with a wholesome ending.
It's not an arg. An arg is a game, as the name suggest, it has puzzles to be solved through different techniques. This is a story told through the medium of minecraft gameplay videos
"brought attention" Theres like a 98% chance Render created this story series in the first place. The second channel even had no views before he showed it.
Matthew is a friend that passed away, and blokwinz feels remorse because the last thing they did was argue over that house. That's their last memory, and they beat themselves up over it. That's how I see it. After all, the tribute to his friend that he wrote at the end really carries the feeling of saying goodbye to somebody you lost rather than some imaginary friend or somebody he just moved away from on bad terms. Matthew also telling him to "be nicer" and such, he's likely blaming himself for the last interaction of his friend alive going that way.
So, at the end. The friend, Matthew, disappears bc the protagonist doesn't need someone fictional to talk to about his sadness and life, because he now has a real friend. So it's just a story about a kid who is sad bc he had to move and lost his friends, so made an imagination to talk to, but eventually, another kid comes in the picture, so the imaginary friend isn't needed anymore.
@@geveryging the vibe I got from that was it wasn't the storm and the rain not putting it out suggests something unnatural. My original thought was it was the imaginary friend
@@spirit5923 that was my original thought too but I feel like the fire would have stopped because that’s what happened every time the imaginary fried did anything That’s what made me question the most
@@geveryging yea. It's either that, or it's a manifestation of something else in his mind. I feel like, given the context, that first one makes more sense
finally, a story with a good ending, honestly one of the best minecraft horror, a story about moving on from the past and being a better person, really loved it
This really hit me hard. My daughter lived Minecraft and lost her friends, stopped going to school in person due to a bullying situation, and was so lonely and sad. She's mended the friendships and is back at school and I can't stand to think of all these lonely kids out there. I have no problem being alone, but people being lonely and sad especially children is unbearable. Amazing and eerie but glad he made a new friend.
“It’s like he’s slowly fading away” it’s like losing a friend. They fade away from you, very slowly. Matthew sounded like a good friend (if he was real). And when you fade away from someone, it’s just, you might never see them again. This kid made up his own character to make him feel better. But he got real friends, Matthew, he faded away into… nothing. He lost a friend that gave him good feelings. And the thought of drifting away from a friend that you had for a long time is just sad. I can’t fully explain it in words, but it’s sad.
Actually it's not sad but rather a happy ending because he learns to not rely on his imaginary friend and decides that he's no longer needed, proceeding to spend time with his actual friend now
to me, this just feels like a representation of social anxiety. donny makes "blokwinz" comfortable so it slowly fades away. that would explain the "be more friendly" messages that matthew whispered to them. also, matthew mentionned how scared the guy was about confronting their old friends.
honestly I like that. mostly because as far as I see, every time Nlokwinz talks about something positive Mathew disappears. and when Mathew disappears it could mean that Blokwinz is finding comfort or more happiness. Mathew acts like a subcountious for The player, he acts like a lil oice in his head, not a mean on, but a comforting one, it's like the thoughts of him that he refuses are himself, Find_Nulla acts like the memories and thoughts people hide away and block out in the mind. is like if that makes sense If it doesn't sorry. it's honestly cool, this video is cool.
I thought this would be scary at first, but it turned out to be a sad story of a kid dealing with childhood grief and regret. I love how obscure this story was, not just giving you the details, but making you dig deep to find out the story.
Another thing I noticed at 22:49, in the players POV, Nulla says the quote. In his friends POV, the player says the quote instead. I think that Matthew could also be himself. It could also explain why Matthew is seemingly trying to help, the player is trying to help himself get over the moving. Another thing it explains, is Matthew answering for the Player and comforting him. He’s just talking to himself like you said. Trying to make himself feel better. Like Matthew is himself, trying to make him look at the brighter side.
I was actually thinking this this but he also doesn't respond to the messages I think he's half dreaming which they were talking about earlier he's talking to his subconscious
Tbh, this isn't a scary story at all, I find it rather sad. The fact that the player introduced himself to a friend to make him feel better and have more motivation to make friends and then he made a friend and matthew then leaves. Edit: Im so happy? Im not gonna reply to any comment btw.
im so glad this story grew farther than some generic creepypasta about a mysterious ‘entity’. rather it’s a cohesive story about moving past and letting go of regret. a great message that people can find a home no matter where they are.
I feel like Matthew was sort of like a manifestation of Alex's grief over losing his friends and familiar home. Alex was always depressed when Matthew was fully visible and constantly grieving over his friends. When Donny came along, Matthew started to disappear because Alex tarted feeling hopeful again. He finally felt like things could actually get better for him. Then when he wrote the sign saying that he can be better, Matthew disappeared for good because Alex had made peace with his grief. He finally had let go and learned to move on
@@European_Captain pretty sure its symbolic, its not a literal 'show', its to tell a story, like how in something like We happy few while playing as Ollie you can see Margret(best example I got its a fav game of mine) or like how in shows you can still see 'invisable' thinks like ghosts or characters that went invisible, its for story telling so you still know whats going on, but in the world of the show/game/movie/comic/so on so forth, they cant be seen,
Just a few things I noticed: 7:25 you mentioned that Matthew was responding for Alex, but that's not how I interpreted it. Seconds earlier, you showed that Alex said he was making the farm FOR Matthew, so I think Matthew was just thanking him for it. That would explain why Alex didn't see it as weird. 18:03 I think Matthew is intended to be portrayed as a friend from school, considering that he said earlier "this school sucks", implying that he goes to the same school as Alex. 28:36 oh. OH. this callback to the beginning, where Alex says "they might as well be dead or something" is what really solidifies my own theory. Matthew is dead. I think that Matthew was one of Alex's old friends, from before he moved. It would explain why Matthew seems to know everything about Alex, as well as his relationships with his old friends. Matthew passed away, and that's why Alex began to distance himself from everyone else. Matthew and Alex were best friends, but Alex can't move on. I'm not sure if Matthew is completely imagined, or if it's meant to be interpreted that Matthew is a ghost trying to guide Alex through his grief, but either way, Matthew was never truly there. It isn't until Alex starts playing with Donny that we see a change in Matthew's character. He becomes transparent. He starts to disappear. At 22:43, I think it's incredibly significant to note that in game, Alex _died._ And in the black space that came after, Matthew is there, further pointing to the possibility that Matthew has been dead all along. And finally, starting at 24:15, Alex claims that he woke up. I think this means that he finally sees and accepts the fact that Matthew is gone, especially because, right after that, we have the video where he says goodbye to Matthew, who disappears altogether. I think this truly symbolizes that Alex is finally accepting the truth, and moving on. I think the whole channel in general may be an allusion to grief, and how one kid in particular deals with it. Maybe the concept of "moving" that we saw in the beginning isn't even in the literal sense, but more in a sense of "moving on", which means that every time Alex remarks on how difficult moving is, or how much it sucks, he may very well be talking about how hard it is to move on from the death of a friend. But that's just a theory. ;] There's more I'd love to unpack, like the conversation at 15:53, or any of the other conversations after that between Matthew and Alex, but for now I'll leave it here. Hope someone could gain some enjoyment from hearing my theory. Overall, I find the channel incredibly intriguing :D
I was thinking about this exact thing too. there'd be no reason to talk about and have a big emphasis on friends dying in the first episode or 2 without it meaning something as a whole.
That ending was genuinely great. It's not about a friend leaving. It's about having finally coped with something that happened to you a long time ago and moving forward rather than staying in the past. Donny is his new friend, Matthew was just a figment of his imagination, but Donny is a very real friend.
@@marsymass moving isnt that bad. whats bad is being told from birth that no amount of work you do will ever amount to your deserving to have necessities, and then every person in eurocentric society living up to that threat until you die before your middle ages because well off eurocentric people get rewarded for causing mass harm to life on earth...
It's something that I'm dealing with right now for the past almost 1 year, I moved bc of my parents decision, I miss my friends. The beginning of the video scared me but after the end it almost make me cry, bc of how relate I'm to blokwinz_
@@Souliosm imagine watching a video ON THE INTERNET covering a fictional story on minecraft about a kid coping with the loss of a friend and when someone else expresses they're feelings of sadness over the characters experiences because of the relatability you're so narrow minded that you decide to say "brotha its literally fake" brother its literally called storytelling but hey I'm sure you saying that made you feel smart bud😂😂
I def feel like Matthew was what the player imagined as his old friends. he was lonely and he missed his old friends along with, obviously, not having any after moving. So, he manifested his friends back. Now, the reason I feel like it was his "old friends" was because Matthew knew that he stopped talking to them, at the end, when he meets Donny, the player is starting to forget Matthew since there's no use for him anymore and he started finding happiness. You can also see that he regrets his past because he types "do you ever wish you could've seen the future?" it shows that he regrets not speaking to his friends and wishes he could go back because he never knew he was going to move. at the end, the sign read: "dear friend, I can be better this time, goodbye." was a sign of grief and regret for ignoring and not talking to his old friends. It's basically a "it's hard to treasure what you have until you don't have it anymore." type situation. At the end, he moved on from his past and his old friends, accepting that they are gone and forgiving himself from his mistake and not doing it again. very sad and wholesome story, i did cry 😿😿
i didnt even notice how big this was and everytime i read somthing this big or like a book my vision starts high lighting the parts in between and meshing the words i read a chunk and now i see why you cryed this is wholesome,REALLY wholesome
Mathew was fading away as Donny is the players new friend. Just like in real life. Kids can have imaginary friends, but the older the kids get, the imaginary friends start to fade
I used to have imaginary friends but as I got older I started to forget about them and eventually forget imaginary friends are even a thing, until now as you just told me
I have lots of friends, but they are not really that close to me. I still have an imaginary friend, Robert. He helps me with my homework. I am 12. Is this unusual behavior?
@@Human_ver-2.1.0 Hey bro, in my opinion, people should be allowed to live their lives without others questioning it. So I don't think this is unusual, and overall it's your opinion.
the thumbnail of this vid is just so..melancholic. matthew glows amidst the darkness of a forest, his head innocently tilted to what seems to be the perspective of our hurting player. w/ the context of the arg, it's incredibly sad but comforting, like how our player found comfort in the manifestation of his loneliness - matthew. (also, is it just me, or does this arg really remind me of when marnie was there..)
i absolutely love these stories that use minecraft as a vessel and aren't really horror. these are so impressive and i hope people make more. this was a great deep dive/summary on the videos!
Watching through this video, it made sense to me that Mathew was someone close to the player irl, either a family member or a friend, who then died, which made the player push away his friends out of grief. His family eventually moves, and Mathew is someone that the player created to try and pretend to be happy. This is supported by the fact that after the player dies to the creeper, he can see Mathew perfectly fine, indicating that Mathew has suffered some fate to end up there. Just an idea!
That first video literally almost made me cry. I'm a military child so moving is far from alien for me; I've moved 8 times in 14 years. Although, this last move (A little less than a year ago) was pretty rough. We gave away all three of our pets, and I lost the whole group of friends I had, even the online ones. All of that was in just less than 2 short weeks.
This series does a good job of showing the remorse of pushing friends away and ending on a bad note. I hope anybody who needs to will find their Donny.
I'm from a military family as well. Lots of moving. I've learned to keep in touch throughout the years, but it's important to value life in the current. Assuming you are around 14, that means you'll be in high school soon enough. My advice to you is, especially as a military child, to take big risks and live life to the fullest. I just finished my sophomore year, and there was still a lot I wanted to do. Live without regrets. Take those risks, get embarrassed, and be happy. I believe in you.
matthew was blockwinz old dead friend the last convo they had felt like A grief or some sort that symbolizes a goodbye and to let go of his old past self and to let go of a guilt he has for him.... the last convo actually got me. it felt like saying a goodbye to a dead friend and feeling thanks for his good intentions and good friendship they had.
This story was so sad fr I can relate so much to this. It brings back memories of my survival worlds where I would just talk to myself for hours and do nothing.
Its not a horror story its a piece of art. An piece of art about an imaginary friend helping him trough his tough times, an friend that is just in or his head himself. and i love it cause i used to have something simillar the moment Matthew answers himself is Alex thinking to himself its like talking out loud permanently but everytime matthew talks its only in his head and when matthew writes "thanks" its just Alex complimenting himself and thinks to himself thanks that it has gotten so good
It's one of those genres where it's hidden as x. but is actually a psychological horror. Like for example, you play a story game and it turns into a literal psychological horror with a really terrible ending and a deep message. Although this one has metaphors and symbolism, and also a deep message.
also, in the episode where Alex dies and respawns in a void with Matthew, Matthew says "and I just cant wake up". but in Donny's perspective, ALEX is the one who says that, that also explains why in one of the the first episodes matthew answered himself.
Its strange that whenever he joins the game doesny say blokwinz_ has joined the game oh btw idk if this is coming further in the video im at like 7 mins in
When Mathew talks to Alex on 22:49 and says 'and I just cant wake up,' on Donnys POV, we can see that it is shown as Alex speaking but in Alexs POV its Mathew who says that meaning that it could be his imagination. This is weird...
I'm pretty curious about that line and what it means. I feel like it might be about taking friends for granted, or foreshadowing taking Matthew for granted as he ended up disappearing, or just a random line. All the interactions in this are pretty odd.
something i noticed about the village part where Matthew disappeared: When the player mentioned in chat that he found a nice person for their group project, that's when matthew went missing, like how in the ending of the video, where the player moves on. You can kinda see it on the village part, but he hasn't fully moved on yet, which is why matthew reappeared later
As a writer I can try to explain what I think is going on here. Essentially the player is upset that he lost his friends and is stuck with his thoughts. Nulla represents those thoughts, a part of the player's mind that is trying to comfort him. Then Donnie comes along and is very friendly towards the player. The player is sceptical at first so Nulla tells him to be nicer and the player starts to adjust to having a friend again. I'm assuming the player has some trust issues due to whatever happened with his friends in the past but in the end he realizes that he's pushing away an opportunity and changes his mind, making friends with Donnie. Genuinely great story writing if you ask me.
Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a mental health condition. If you're living with DID, it means you have two or more separate identities. These personalities control your behavior at different times. Each identity has its own personal history, traits, likes and dislikes. DID can lead to gaps in memory and hallucinations (believing something is real when it isn’t). so if you start to connect the dots, the player was a person sad that they moved out and lost all of their friends, thats why mathew was there, they're just a seperate personality our player has from the trauma of whatever happened to their friend, and thats why mathew said thanks to their own compliment, our player was saying that, but its just a mistake in their personality, its just having did, thinking of a friend, and thats why mathew starts to disappear as our player finds a new friend, our player begins to finally cope, and let their old past go, these video footages are the perfect explanations to how systems(people with did) really are like, and i found it geniuenely a beatiful way to raise awareness of it.
Yeah, I thought it was a manifestation of the player's inner thoughts, the ones he tries to suppress, and it may have been a coping mechanism for the player to create a character to talk to.
Surprised nobody has mentioned this, but the username “Donnie Darko” isn’t just a random name. It’s actually the title of a film where the main character of the same name is constantly haunted by apparitions of a man in a white rabbit costume who had been recently killed (technically. There’s some time stuff that makes it so the apparition exists before the man actually dies but that doesn’t seem to be the part that’s important to the reference, though maybe there’s some significance in that given they mention time a lot with stuff like the first video asking if you wish things were how they used to be) I feel like this obviously relates to the situation, where our main character is haunted by these sometimes ghostly looking visions of a friend of theirs with a white Minecraft skin. The main difference is the kid in the video named Darko isn’t the one haunted, he’s on the sidelines watching his friend being haunted, which I feel adds onto the theory that Matthew is actually dead due to him best fitting the rabbit apparition I mentioned
@@jeanremi8384 It was from 2001 it felt like the kind of movie that’d be fine with spoiling, plus how would I mention how it likely ties into this without spoilers?
Small little detail: at 22:49, Matthew says "and I just cant wake up" but at 23:42, its actually AlexSpeaks, blokwinz, or most commonly referred to in this video as the player, who says "and i just cant wake up." I'm assuming this continues on as Matthew keeps speaking to Alex, but the messages instead are shown to be typed by Alex. This is very confusing as only Alex can see and talk with Matthew. I believe that during this time, Alex is in a state of somniloquy, or sleep talking. When Donny mentions using a dairy to write down his thoughts, we obviously see that from Alex's perspective, he looks at Matthew and Matthew looks at Alex. Matthew is definitely some kind of imaginary diary that Alex uses since for all of the videos before he meets Donny, he speaks in a morbid way, talking about how his friends may already be "dead" or comparing moving as "the world ending to some nuclear apocalypse." As explained in the video, when Alex meets Donny, Matthew starts to fade as Alex starts to get to know and learn more about Donny. This represents that Alex is starting to feel comfortable around Donny and is starting to talk less to Matthew, as if he's starting to talk less to his imaginary diary. After a bit of time, on the final episode, Matthew looks at Alex as if urging him to let go of him. Alex hesitates for a moment but then gives into reality as he's now friends with Donny and finally lets go of Matthew. Honestly, its a common story as moving is a difficult time for you as you lose contact with old friends and are hesitant to make new friends since you're not familiar with the new place, but the way it was executed was amazing. It was simple but effective. ts was just me yapping and possibly overanalyzing but still tho it was an amazing story
The way the video represents it is kinda off tbh, like more towards horror. When the way I see it, it is more of a sad story, about acceptance/moving on. (But still the process has horror aspects in it but that's not the main part of the story)
The really cool thing is all of this can be done in vanilla Minecraft. Yes, the disappearing house and fences would be more easily done with world edit, but you can still do it with the fill command. And you can use the /team seeFriendlyInvisibles to get the effect for Matthew. This is a good showcase of what you can do in complete vanilla with very few commands!
It hits hard when Blokwinz_ said “dear friend, I can be better this time, Goodbye” then Matthew disappears because he comforted Blokwinz_ because Matthew could possibly be dead.
This honestly really sits with me, i remember my friend of 5~6 years progressively become a terrible person and eventually tried to take their life, they were originally very kind and i honestly still sometimes pretend he is still here playing with me
this storyline is so good, the way they focused on the details and such. Matthew symbolise as a "imaginary friend" towards Alex. when Donny joined the server, Matthew slowly disappear due to Donny's excisting in the server. Matthew slowly disappear in Alex sight, because Alex find a new friend, perhaps a companion. Matthew is just Alex's imagination, Matthew was "created" to accompany Alex, and when Donny joined, Donny are the one who continues to accompany Alex, so Matthew doesn't have a reason to stay, because someone's already accompanying Alex. such a good scripting, I love this.
I know right? This feels almost as if it was some project made by a high schooler (a very clever one at that )moving away from his childhood friends. The videos were very thoroughly though out.
Matthew is the ghost of his friends and who he was. Not the literal ghost, but the ghost of their friendship. He's the ghost of what our player perspective wanted from his friends at home speaking of both how the player feels as well as how his old friends felt. It's the amalgamation of abandonment and lost hope that brought him to where he is. It's not just a story of separation, but the story of betrayal and abandonment. He could be what he wanted, when they initially met, but turned into something just way more saddening. I can't even explain the feeling, but I can feel it, and that's what hurts the most about this story.
I just clicked this video thinking that i was gonna become scared and have nightmares but this was actually wholesome asf i wish matthew was real and also when you revealed that the items alex dropped for matthew but it was there the whole entire time since he was not a real person made me tear up 😢

I love these allegories and symbolism they're hinting towards here: There's a very clear "Plato's Cave" allegory shown throughout, where the main player would be constantly inside of a tunnel beneath the surface, hinting towards their fear of going out and making friends / new experiences in a new environment. Matthew could symbolize player's inner thoughts slowly drowning them out, especially when the player is stuck within the dark cube or when Matthew starts personally attacking them through in-game chat. I'd say Matthew disappearing could symbolize the player's overcoming of the mentioned fear. Player leaves his tunnel out into the surface afterwards almost like stepping out of a dark cave into the light. This one might be a reach, but staring at growing crops and constantly trying to make a farm hints towards the player wanting to fit in and adapt. In the first attempt of him making a farm, they plant down 2 seeds, as opposed to 6 seeds in his last episode, symbolizing that the player is getting used to the newer environment or / and growing as a person. Building a fence around their home might hint towards the player feeling isolated due to them pushing back their friends and moving to a new place. When you think about it, the main player hasn't really left the fenced home, rather travelling trough tunnels from that place, spying on his friend almost like peaking into the new surroundings. In the last episode he is visibly out of the fence, almost like leaving his isolation and experiencing new things, symbolized by making a treehouse for instance. Also, pretty sure the Minecraft world symbolizes the new environment itself. It would fit in perfectly, as Michael appears in the world cause it is the only thing the player is left with - his inner thoughts. Every other symbolism I've listed would also match perfectly. The weather to emotion correlation, as listed in the video, would make a lot of sense as well, as the raining weather in this new environment could hint towards the player feeling depressed. These small details add so much when you take into consideration that this ARG is based on a lot of symbolism right off the bat, spicing things up, almost like it's like a puzzle piece, I love it. [EDIT] I meant "Cave allegory" instead of "Plato's cave allegory" there, my bad. Thanks for pointing it out!
That's a cave allegory, sure, but definitely not a Plato's Cave one. Plato's Cave is about building a distorted ontology by only having access to secondary sources of knowledge about the world, not about hiding from social interaction.
This is actually so beautiful. It's shows development and forgiveness. The boy just tries to move on from the past and be a better friend in the future. Really great and wondeful story.
At 23:07 you can see a crit recharge bar appear when the crosshair is pointed towards where Matthew is. This bar only appears when pointed towards entities. Matthew is actually present there but is actually fully invisible when compared to Alex speaks's POV.
That's more of technicality. The way those videos were done was putting matthew and alex in the same team, giving matthew invisibility potion effect and enabling "see invisible allies" for their team. That way matthew was there but only alex could see him.
This entire video is showing the player recovering from his depression. The sign he set down was him saying he's gonna start himself again. That's amazing. And makes my heart swell.
In donnys pov when blokwinz died, we can see on bloks pov that matthews is chatting to him, but on donnys pov blokwinz is talking to himself? It also goes back to matthews being his imagination. Because, matthews chats are actually blok’s chats.
Matthew was there as an imaginary friend and wanted to comfort the player we watch and help him make friends so when the player actually makes a friend sith Donny, Matthew isn't needed anymore and he fades away. This is such a wholesome arg❤
17:13 i think nulla was responding to the message "they stand there and do nothing like a statue", since his friends weren't doing "nothing", they were just confused by him pushing them away and were genuinely concerned.
the village burning scene reminded me of the phrase "a child who is not embraced by the village will burn it to feel its warmth" maybe this is intentional. alex felt scorned by their friends, and burned those friends (metaphorically) and/or abandoned them. it would explain the random burning. idk.
Considering Alex's dark thoughts through the series, his complaints about school, his bad interactions with past friends, him destroying a public area (the burnt village) I thought alex was on the verge of becoming a school shooter or some shit like that and I am pretty sure he's mentally ill since he not only sees things that don't exist but he shows paranoia by theorizing that their something in his world and with him spying on donny for no good reason.
I find this story kind of happy. Its feels like a story of Alex missing his friend who may have passed away after they had a fight over the houses roof material. Then these videos are him working through his grief until he finally met a new friend who he was scared to be kind to. He didnt want to hurt anymore. Eventually he let his guard down and in doing so nulla left and was at peace. A story about never letting bad things rule your life and dictate your future. Living in the moment and cherishing the past but not letting it control you. Opening up and letting yourself feel happy dispite how sad you feel.
Nice to know it wasn't some disturbing, evil entity terrorising kids, just the player's way of coping with his sadness of losing his friends. UNTIL THE POV THEORY AT THE END DAMMIT, ALONG WITH THE WEIRD NOISES ON THE SOUNDTRACK
I love this. It's a great representation of the anxiety of moving away and making new friends, feeling like you have no one so you make up someone, or maybe reimagining a friend you lost, either from just not being friends anymore or from death
i think an interesting detail that didn't get mentioned was the fact that blokwins mentions a disagreement over the dark oak roof of the house which is suggested to be the reason that he doesn't talk to his old friends anymore. in the final video donny asks for dark oak, which might have triggered blokwins to finally part with matthew. blokwins realized that donny isn't the same as the people he knew before, and he doesnt have to be afraid anymore. matthew disappearing is probably blokwins finally leaving that 'half-way between state; he mentioned before, and properly coping with moving
i would like to mention the farm was made for mathew. so he probably wasn't thanking his own comment, he was thanking him for the farm. like complimenting someone on the work they made to make you a nice hat then thanking them for it.
matthew's leave made me cry because i just hate having to lose someone youre close to even if it seems like he isnt even real 💔 matthew seemed like the perfect friend, the type of person who just understands you without having to say anything, but seeing him dissappear just like that dang bro.
When Matthew disapears, and then our main character stumbles upon the village, some houses are burning, but something that I would like to point out is Matthew says: "There's books here!" This means somehow Matthew already knew about the books, so he had already been in the village before blokwinz_ comes. This could provew that Matthew burnt down the houses in the village that Render points out in the video.
Could be a good sad movie reference haha. You have a friend who has gone, he returns in the form of a spirit. You feel lonely but your spirit friend cheers you up and accompanies you. You make new friends and you are happy. Your spirit friend is happy for you and he just walks away. Like your spirit friend finally got something done from that bond of friendship.
from someone else in this comment section that really sums up what it truly might be: "Matthew is a friend that passed away, and blokwinz feels remorse because the last thing they did was argue over that house. That's their last memory, and they beat themselves up over it. That's how I see it. After all, the tribute to his friend that he wrote at the end really carries the feeling of saying goodbye to somebody you lost rather than some imaginary friend or somebody he just moved away from on bad terms. Matthew also telling him to "be nicer" and such, he's likely blaming himself for the last interaction of his friend alive going that way." as well as this "Just a few things I noticed: 7:25 you mentioned that Matthew was responding for Alex, but that's not how I interpreted it. At 22:43, I think it's incredibly significant to note that in game, Alex died. And in the black space that came after, Matthew is there, further pointing to the possibility that Matthew has been dead all along. Overall, I find the channel incredibly intriguing :D" This is all very good evidence to support this isn't just some entity but its actually the grief of Alex instead and the whole story is just his own journey of dealing and coping with it while adjusting to the new environment of moving, as stated here in another message "I love these allegories and symbolism they're hinting towards here: There's a very clear "Plato's Cave" allegory shown throughout, where the main player would be constantly inside of a tunnel beneath the surface, hinting towards their fear of going out and making friends / new experiences in a new environment. The weather to emotion correlation, as listed in the video, would make a lot of sense as well, as the raining weather in this new environment could hint towards the player feeling depressed."
"Nulla"... that's a great name for the unnatural player as "Null" is a common term in coding and whatnot to refer to when there's not information about something. A way to give a value when you don't have a value for something.
Wow. I commented this and a few seconds later in the video after I unpaused it coincidentally came to the bit about when blokwinz_ asked Nulla/Mathew if anyone makes fun of their name.
reminds me of the movie/novel "i'm thinking of ending things." the plot twists and the way the events of the movie itself were slowly revealed to be coping mechanisms of being COMPLETELY alone in life, no shoulder to cry on. Freaked me OUT. i was convinced there was other characters in the movie other than the main guy, but it was all in his head. and the reality of his life would break through the movie at times, MOST UNSETTLING SLOW MOVIE EVER WITH THE BESSSTT ENDING
What a complex and fascinating Minecraft video! Whoever set this up would have had to spend hours planning it with faith that it would eventually be seen that’s crazy! Also, nice use of the Severance song that was a nice touch! 👍
whoever set this up 100% knew that this video would be made, either this channel made the videos theselfes or simply the guy that wrote the email was the one that made it
One thing i noticed was that blokwinz was building a house from the sever with his friends which could mean that he was trying to recreate and anchor to the past, but at the end he is helping to build donny's new house, which shows that he is building new memories.
Notice how at 22:48 it's nulla who says "and I just can't wake up" while at 23:42 it's blokwinz? It really makes you think about what kind of things our player is perceiving matthew to have said versus himself.
This was a disturbing watch for me since I can't stand the loneliness and emptiness even in games, yet this was brought tears to my eyes because I relate so much to the player. I'm so glad Player finally got to make a real friend, and it makes me sad that Matthew isn't an actual friend and just disappears in the end. :(
this hits hard. especially when donny joined and "matthew" started telling our player to be more polite, talk more, etc. i can relate to how he's feeling cause i've had to deal with moving away from friends as well

Alright here's my take:
Matthew was Alex's real friend who died (possibly in a house fire due to the burning village house).

I knew there was a resemblance as soon as I saw the name.
such a good movie too
I thought he was gonna pull a fight club and it’d be revealed HE was Matthew.

Good theory but that guys theory has alot of evidence so it has to be the main one.

Herobrine the good ending
“It’s like he’s slowly fading away” it’s like losing a friend. They fade away from you, very slowly. Matthew sounded like a good friend (if he was real). And when you fade away from someone, it’s just, you might never see them again. This kid made up his own character to make him feel better. But he got real friends, Matthew, he faded away into… nothing. He lost a friend that gave him good feelings. And the thought of drifting away from a friend that you had for a long time is just sad. I can’t fully explain it in words, but it’s sad.
Actually it's not sad but rather a happy ending because he learns to not rely on his imaginary friend and decides that he's no longer needed, proceeding to spend time with his actual friend now
to me, this just feels like a representation of social anxiety. donny makes "blokwinz" comfortable so it slowly fades away. that would explain the "be more friendly" messages that matthew whispered to them. also, matthew mentionned how scared the guy was about confronting their old friends.
hes skizo
For sure! The fact that his response to strange things in the game is assuming someone is trying to hurt him and building a bunker are more examples.
why matthew dont grant achievment??????
honestly I like that. mostly because as far as I see, every time Nlokwinz talks about something positive Mathew disappears. and when Mathew disappears it could mean that Blokwinz is finding comfort or more happiness.

Now, the reason I feel like it was his "old friends" was because Matthew knew that he stopped talking to them, at the end, when he meets Donny, the player is starting to forget Matthew since there's no use for him anymore and he started finding happiness. Mathew was fading away as Donny is the players new friend. Just like in real life. Kids can have imaginary friends, but the older the kids get, the imaginary friends start to fade
I used to have imaginary friends but as I got older I started to forget about them and eventually forget imaginary friends are even a thing, until now as you just told me
@@graceluo5531 Yeah, I don't know what it is but the idea of forgeting someone you thought was real, puts a shiver down my spine.
I have lots of friends, but they are not really that close to me. I still have an imaginary friend, Robert. He helps me with my homework. I am 12. Is this unusual behavior?

the thumbnail of this vid is just so..melancholic. matthew glows amidst the darkness of a forest, his head innocently tilted to what seems to be the perspective of our hurting player. w/ the context of the arg, it's incredibly sad but comforting, like how our player found comfort in the manifestation of his loneliness - matthew.
(also, is it just me, or does this arg really remind me of when marnie was there..)
7:34 and 9:49 Matthew doesn't thank himself for the compliment, he's thanking our protagonist for building it FOR him
Oh my god
that makes so much more sense omg
ohh that makes it read more easy lol
I know right? There are some exaggerations here and in other points of the video.
Thats what i was saying when i saw that part
i absolutely love these stories that use minecraft as a vessel and aren't really horror. these are so impressive and i hope people make more. this was a great deep dive/summary on the videos!
I'm so sorry. I hope everything gets better soon bc I promise you some day things will ❤
This series does a good job of showing the remorse of pushing friends away and ending on a bad note. I hope anybody who needs to will find their Donny.
I’m so sorry :c do you ever want to play Minecraft together
I’m a military child too, expect my parents are divorced so I didn’t have to move as often.
I believe in you.
matthew was blockwinz old dead friend
the last convo they had felt like A grief or some sort that symbolizes a goodbye and to let go of his old past self and to let go of a guilt he has for him....
the last convo actually got me. it felt like saying a goodbye to a dead friend and feeling thanks for his good intentions and good friendship they had.
yeh i think the whole movie he created is his story on how he dealt with grief
It goes from "He made a new friend, nice!" to "Damm this kid has schizophrenia"
This story was so sad fr I can relate so much to this. It brings back memories of my survival worlds where I would just talk to myself for hours and do nothing.
Uhhh bro… u good?
i hope you find someone to play with

I do that when I need somethin to trade at the villagers

'Do you ever take things for granted?' This line caught my attention right out of the gate.
I'm pretty curious about that line and what it means. I feel like it might be about taking friends for granted, or foreshadowing taking Matthew for granted as he ended up disappearing, or just a random line. All the interactions in this are pretty odd.
@@mykittenisaferociousnugget I agree.
something i noticed about the village part where Matthew disappeared: When the player mentioned in chat that he found a nice person for their group project, that's when matthew went missing, like how in the ending of the video, where the player moves on. You can kinda see it on the village part, but he hasn't fully moved on yet, which is why matthew reappeared later
OMG trueee
like the matrix, you see reality for a split second but then the illusion of the matrix comes back.
Yeah true
Realll
Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a mental health condition. If you're living with DID, it means you have two or more separate identities. These personalities control your behavior at different times. Each identity has its own personal history, traits, likes and dislikes. DID can lead to gaps in memory and hallucinations (believing something is real when it isn’t). so if you start to connect the dots, the player was a person sad that they moved out and lost all of their friends, thats why mathew was there, they're just a seperate personality our player has from the trauma of whatever happened to their friend, and thats why mathew said thanks to their own compliment, our player was saying that, but its just a mistake in their personality, its just having did, thinking of a friend, and thats why mathew starts to disappear as our player finds a new friend, our player begins to finally cope, and let their old past go, these video footages are the perfect explanations to how systems(people with did) really are like, and i found it geniuenely a beatiful way to raise awareness of it.
this is literally exactly how i saw it lol thank you
Yeah, I thought it was a manifestation of the player's inner thoughts, the ones he tries to suppress, and it may have been a coping mechanism for the player to create a character to talk to.
13:15 mathew is there on the corner when the thunder striked but he's inside
2:08 I think that this is a symbol of their life. They work up, create friends just to have it all taken away, years of work, stolen.
Nulla means “nothing” as well, so makes sense that whatever he makes is just an illusion
and that there is Nothing Left, Its over there is Nothing to find (Find Nulla)
He does say that in the video😕

Surprised nobody has mentioned this, but the username “Donnie Darko” isn’t just a random name. It’s actually the title of a film where the main character of the same name is constantly haunted by apparitions of a man in a white rabbit costume who had been recently killed (technically. There’s some time stuff that makes it so the apparition exists before the man actually dies but that doesn’t seem to be the part that’s important to the reference, though maybe there’s some significance in that given they mention time a lot with stuff like the first video asking if you wish things were how they used to be)
I feel like this obviously relates to the situation, where our main character is haunted by these sometimes ghostly looking visions of a friend of theirs with a white Minecraft skin. The main difference is the kid in the video named Darko isn’t the one haunted, he’s on the sidelines watching his friend being haunted, which I feel adds onto the theory that Matthew is actually dead due to him best fitting the rabbit apparition I mentioned
Imagine seeing someone haunted like that. Even people with high level of schizophrenia will be concerned to that

I didn't even notice, lol
I haven’t read this yet and only is this far but 13:16 you can see Matthew in the background on the corner

That would makes sense because of all the references to death in episode one, maybe Matthew isn't just an imaginary friend, but a dead one

this storyline is so good, the way they focused on the details and such.
25:42 bro forgot what video he was making
Matthew is the ghost of his friends and who he was. Not the literal ghost, but the ghost of their friendship. He's the ghost of what our player perspective wanted from his friends at home speaking of both how the player feels as well as how his old friends felt. It's the amalgamation of abandonment and lost hope that brought him to where he is. It's not just a story of separation, but the story of betrayal and abandonment. He could be what he wanted, when they initially met, but turned into something just way more saddening. I can't even explain the feeling, but I can feel it, and that's what hurts the most about this story.

I love these allegories and symbolism they're hinting towards here:
There's a very clear "Plato's Cave" allegory shown throughout, where the main player would be constantly inside of a tunnel beneath the surface, hinting towards their fear of going out and making friends / new experiences in a new environment.

17:13 i think nulla was responding to the message "they stand there and do nothing like a statue", since his friends weren't doing "nothing", they were just confused by him pushing them away and were genuinely concerned.
the village burning scene reminded me of the phrase "a child who is not embraced by the village will burn it to feel its warmth"
maybe this is intentional. alex felt scorned by their friends, and burned those friends (metaphorically) and/or abandoned them. it would explain the random burning.

Matthew and Alex are definitely the same person. Matthews just a comfort personality encouraging him to make friends and get out more.
I love this. It's a great representation of the anxiety of moving away and making new friends, feeling like you have no one so you make up someone, or maybe reimagining a friend you lost, either from just not being friends anymore or from death
“But then right after we see this…” . . . in that 5 seconds of silence, a kitkat ad pops up and scares me😂
i think an interesting detail that didn't get mentioned was the fact that blokwins mentions a disagreement over the dark oak roof of the house which is suggested to be the reason that he doesn't talk to his old friends anymore. in the final video donny asks for dark oak, which might have triggered blokwins to finally part with matthew. blokwins realized that donny isn't the same as the people he knew before, and he doesnt have to be afraid anymore. matthew disappearing is probably blokwins finally leaving that 'half-way between state; he mentioned before, and properly coping with moving
In episode 2 Matthew says that he couldn’t get dark oak, so that makes since

I'm nearly certain I've read or watched something with the exact same premise
The movie “Fall” is literally this
There was a movie about a German kid and his imaginary friend is hitler
from someone else in this comment section that really sums up what it truly might be:
"Matthew is a friend that passed away, and blokwinz feels remorse because the last thing they did was argue over that house. That's their last memory, and they beat themselves up over it. That's how I see it. After all, the tribute to his friend that he wrote at the end really carries the feeling of saying goodbye to somebody you lost rather than some imaginary friend or somebody he just moved away from on bad terms. Matthew also telling him to "be nicer" and such, he's likely blaming himself for the last interaction of his friend alive going that way."
as well as this
"Just a few things I noticed:
7:25 you mentioned that Matthew was responding for Alex, but that's not how I interpreted it.
At 22:43, I think it's incredibly significant to note that in game, Alex died. And in the black space that came after, Matthew is there, further pointing to the possibility that Matthew has been dead all along.
But that's just a theory. ;]
There's more I'd love to unpack, like the conversation at 15:53, or any of the other conversations after that between Matthew and Alex, but for now I'll leave it here. Hope someone could gain some enjoyment from hearing my theory. Overall, I find the channel incredibly intriguing :D"
This is all very good evidence to support this isn't just some entity but its actually the grief of Alex instead and the whole story is just his own journey of dealing and coping with it while adjusting to the new environment of moving, as stated here in another message

"Nulla"... that's a great name for the unnatural player as "Null" is a common term in coding and whatnot to refer to when there's not information about something. A way to give a value when you don't have a value for something.

Nulla genuinely sounds like a banger name
I do nil. Lua.
Pretty sure that "null" literally means "zero"/"none"
Alright he said it in the video, my bad
the flowers going into the lava pit could be a tribute to his friend or a shrine
reminds me of the movie/novel "i'm thinking of ending things." the plot twists and the way the events of the movie itself were slowly revealed to be coping mechanisms of being COMPLETELY alone in life, no shoulder to cry on.
First🎉
Make me more popular than the reply above.
Ayee Wunba, glad to see you here :o
here before it blows up
whoever set this up 100% knew that this video would be made, either this channel made the videos theselfes or simply the guy that wrote the email was the one that made it
One thing i noticed was that blokwinz was building a house from the sever with his friends which could mean that he was trying to recreate and anchor to the past, but at the end he is helping to build donny's new house, which shows that he is building new memories.
Why was matthew so comforting and nice like he seemed so innocent when his house got deleted😭
this hits hard. especially when donny joined and "matthew" started telling our player to be more polite, talk more, etc. i can relate to how he's feeling cause i've had to deal with moving away from friends as well
Seems like Alexspeaks is a seriously good director. What a crazy story. I love the stuff that creators leave for internet sleuths to figure out. They dont explain anything, theres just a bunch of weird shit that you have to piece together yourself
Most ARGs end up having bad endings or something like that, but this ARG has a good ending, which is very rare. it was very worth it to watch
