personally I love packaging. I like displaying it on my shelf and it is always funny when people come to my house and are like "what is little door". I also think the companies do it because it makes you value the trick more. A great example of that is self tying shoelaces. what you get cost about $2 to make but because of the box it feels worth it.
Packaging matters little. The product has to be packaged enough so I know the items are unlikely to be damaged. I expect better packaging on more costly things also. On the cheap things, I don't care. I have seen sponge balls that were way over packed. A simple bag with a divider to keep colors or gimmicks separated are fine.
Yeah, I know some companies for digital only products still send out a card to redeem and that card is in a fancy box for the trick and then sent off. That is stupid. Digital should always be immediate access. I like things to look nice. If I am ordering from one of the big online shops, I want packaging to be nice, especially since i know the cost of each trick has that figured into it. That was my big problem with the Quantum deck, the packaging was super nice and intricate, but when Vanishing made their own, you got a deck of cards with a cheaply printed sleeve.
