SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT PACKAGING & SHIPPING // How to package with eco-friendly material and it's cost

  • In anticipation of the recent e-commerce launch, I had to prepare packaging material to make sure my pieces arrive safely into the hands of my customers. But at the same time, I want to be as sustainable as possible using only recyclable and recycled material.
I also went through how much it cost initially as well as per package to give people a reference as to how much it cost, and hopefully, convince others to switch away from plastic packaging.

In the philippines, we use banana leaves to use as packaging. pass it over flame until it is glossy and fragrant. The fibers will toughen up and can be wrapped around without breaking. It has a soft cushion when wrapped around a couple of times. Good for shipping live plants, too.❤️ For the scrunchie, we use semi dried banana (or palm)we just have to tear it to make strands, scrunch it up, fill the gaps until the items is tight. I like your packaging tape idea.❤️

That’s amazing! It would be such a nice experience to open a package of ceramics wrapped in plant. Too bad it might be too expensive to do in Australia.

I came across an exhibition yesterday that showcased bioplastic made from algae and seaweed, its very workable and you can melt it down and reuse it in different shapes. Not something that is currently done on a large scale but in the future, it could replace petroleum plastic.

Thanks for this video. Our Etsy store is growing, and we've taken more notice of the amount of plastic (bubble wrap, packing tape) we're going through to ship our goods. We make concrete planter pots, which are both heavy, can have sharp edges, but is also sort of scratch-prone and fragile. I had no idea Ranpack was a thing. We've definitely seen crumpled paper scratch the concrete, so that was a great learning. In my head, I had always thought about how much more expensive double-boxing is instead of using bubble wrap...but what I figured out was that my per-box cost was almost identical to my 2'x2' bubble wrap cost for the large bubble style. So even though I'm spending less on boxes, I'm spending *more* than the box's cost on additional bubble wrap.

    • @necrojoe

That was what we initially thought, too. However, once I really sat down and did the math, the diffefence wasn't that much. For example, because we use the larger bubble bubble wrap, a single 2ftx2ft square of it is about 85 cents (based on the cheapest per-foot cost I could find in 2ft wide rolls). We would usually use at least 2 sheets, so that's $1.70. Then you still need the outside box and tape anyway, so we were already at about $3. When we factored in the less expensive versions we found of the products he showed, we end up spending $3.40 per package. And the packaging takes up less room too (rolls of bubble wrap are very bulky). In 2.5 years, 1000 shipments, zero damage. We usually get most of out boxes from Staples, and once I had a paper dispenser box, I just buy refill rolls of the papers which are much cheaper. For the tissue paper, I found "massage table paper" rolls to be a good alternative. :)

A local seller around us just went extraordinary by using Coconut Husk (from matured brown coconut) to replace bubble wrap. Seems funny but really smart though. Coconut Husk - strong yet bendable, dry and clean besides 100% organic! 😊 With such solid protection we won't be needing even much tapes on the outer. Maybe more of us could start practicing this till it doesn't appear odd. For us in southeast asia, we could get the husk at nearby mini markets that cuts matured coconuts to sell fresh coconut meat and milk that we use for local cooking and considering the husks often discarded, we might be able to get it for free.

Great video! I had no idea a paper tape like that existed, impressive!
I'm going to start selling used books online and I'm worried about the packaging, trying to maintain a low packaging cost but also friendly to the environment and appealing to the eye!
I'll use Kraft paper for most of the books (exterior packaging where I'll write addresses) but I'm thinking of replacing the bubble wrap with honeycomb wrap paper to avoid all the plastic.
Do I also have to use tissue paper before wrapping it in honey paper? I'm concerned it may scratch the books or something.
I also have to try and keep the final package as light as possible due to shipping costs... I don't know when I'm putting too much paper into it and it's not justified... I really want to protect the books but without increasing the costs unnecessarily.

Good question! I didn’t even think about that. I just got the ink pad from the same place I got my stamps, doubt it’s anything specifically eco friendly.

do you think you could use newspaper instead of kraft paper? I'm just starting to consider making an ecommerce site and don't have a huge budget for upfront costs but want to use 100% recycleable materials!

    • @twelve.80
      @twelve.80  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I guess it would depend on what you are shipping, they they are light weight newspaper should be fine, but they don’t have enough structure to hold heavier things unless you pack a lot into it.

for the paper glue do you have to buy that dispenser thing for it or could u just dip a brush in water and dab it on the tape by hand? I'd rather not buy a dispenser since I don't ship things off too often and I wouldn't be able to use it enough. I'm also trying to be more eco friendly with packaging, right now I'm using what I already have in the house and I also try to reuse packaging that I get in the mail (reused packaging doesn't always look pretty but please try to use it anyway if its not too beat up. Getting the most use out of something is always more sustainable than buying it new) also for used packaging that I get through the mail by big companies (such as amazon) since I can't send the package by itself, I usually use their padded bubble mailers as protection for the items I send out (I put the item in the mailer and then tape it closed and then put it in a shipping box) and if I can't peel the shipping labels off all the way, i just use a sharpie to color over any sensitive information. Again, packaging doesn't always look pretty but at least im getting more use out of it.

Hi Tiffany, I agree! Reusing things is definitely more eco friendly than simply buying new. With the paper tape you can simply brush on water to activate the glue!
