      I've lost the Wi-Fi connection quite a few times on my laptop because Win 10 installed an update in the background without so much as a heads up. The best part, I had to do a reboot to get it working again. Microsoft needs to learn how Linux does things. I remember having a Debian install on a Laptop years ago, like 8-10 years ago... and...
    1). Updating was 100% manual.
    2). Updating almost never required a restart unless it was the Kernel (and even then, the computer said 'you *should* restart *soon* ')
    3). Updating only took 30-60 seconds even with 10+ pieces of software needing updating, not 5 minutes+.
    4). The updating software told you *exactly* what it was downloading, *exactly* how large it was, and *exactly* what was currently being done, instead of a blank progress meter that doesn't work or isn't accurate 99.999999% of the time.
    Linux has had this crap in the bag forever, what's Microsoft's excuse?

      Tasks like controlling a 3D printer directly from a PC for some advanced usages or longer term logging from an oscilloscope, etc. Windows 10 is just totally unsuited to and obnoxious in its approach.

    • @FranciscoTChavez
      @FranciscoTChavez 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Rroff2 I do like that they just enable auto update by default because otherwise, most people would never update their machines leading to all sorts of virus. It used to be that my first step when fixing someone else's computer was to run Windows Update and that took quite a few hours and I was lucky if the only had around 100 updates to install. And, no, that number wasn't a joke, I really did consider my self lucky if there were only 100 or so updates in the list.
      What I don't like is that we don't have the power to go into the settings and setting it to only lettings us know when there's an update and letting us decide when to download and install it. It's my machine and as such, I should be able to decide when it gets updated without having to completely disable updates. In my experience, most of the people with a back-log of over 100 updates, were also the people that wouldn't take the time to go into the settings and disable auto-update. So, having auto-update on by default (and not telling the User) would work just fine.
      The other issue is this thing where they roll all updates into a single package and enforce auto update on everyone; that's really stupid. It creates a situation where the only way to avoid one specific bad update is by disabling all updates which is really dumb. It makes Users choose between running the risk of bricking their system or getting a bunch of viruses due to outdated security.

And even though Win10 has gotten better about not keeping the extra bloat, there's still a lot there from Windows 3.11 and everything since. Want Program Manager? It's in there. Want the XP Picture Viewer? It's still in there. Etc.... And the updates also address things you don't use but may use in the future.

      Im pretty sure thats one of the reason DX12 is hold back by a lot of studios, beside being different developing with it. Developer want their game to run on the biggest plattforms first. Using DX11 they can catch Windows 7, 8 & 10 while DX12 only gets 10. First priority is always DX11 and after that we often get pretty bad DX12 implementations.

      VULKAN plays nice with Windows, Nintendo Switch, Android, and most importantly Linux. IMO it outperforms DX12, in just about every game or emulator I have been able to throw at it. kakarroto007 I disagree. The fairest comparison would be if a game supports both DX12 AND Vulkan, which we just don't have right now. So we can't make comparisons. Plus, in some cases, the DX12 port has worse performance as it is a new paradigm and developers are not used to it yet

      Windows update sucks especially if you don't have high speed internet and a stable one, i live Indonesia where high speed internet isn't a thing. 100 mbps is a luxury here, 50 mbps is a common if you live in jakarta or main city, here in my village getting 20mbps is a blessing where it could go down to even 500 kbps (bits not bytes) sometimes not to mention the price for it which is high. Windows update is really annoying since if your connection isn't stable, let's say it's stable for a couple of minute and it dropped to no connection, this is where it get annoying, after the connection goes back up, the update didn't continue and sometimes even after an hour or even 3 hourof waiting it stays the same (I'm using ssd as my boot drive) thus i need to restart my windows cleared the last update cache, restart again and the update could start again. Therefore when Windows 10 has function to delay update i activated it immediately so i don't need to do those kind of thing often and for the past months i've been using O&O Shut Up 10 to disable update when i don't want to update it.

      But seriously, it's not that windows is bad. It's a very useful system, greatest for gaming, etc. but has some serious flaws, one of them is lack of privacy and choice. And of course updates. Linux is awesome but its major flaws are because it doesn't have such big marketshare and that is why we have fewer games or if they run, you need to accept ca. 10-20 fps loss and tinkering with some titles. That is also the reason why Adobe suite is not on Linux and why many standard programs are not (easily) available there. And more.
      The more Linux becomes known and popular, the better for the whole ecosystem and at some point, major players and various communities start to notice it. It's good for Linux and its users but it's also good for average computer users who become aware of the choices and are freer because of that.
      So yeah, whenever something bad is about Windows, we point our ears to enjoy lack of such problem and have reasons to convince others, so we could have better and better system. Besides, competition is good and Windows has a too big monopoly. It's not healthy for everyone.

    Microsoft has actually never removed the ability to disable updates for power users. If you are running Windows 10 Pro, embedded, or enterprise you have access to the system's Group Policies which allow you to very granularly control your system. Under [Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update] you can find a policy called "Configure Automatic Updates" which lets you /completely/ disable /ALL/ updates, or, alternatively configure it to work more like, well, any sane system.
    You can actually configure if you want it to auto download the update or ask you first, and then you can also choose if you want it to schedule the update, or ask you if you want to install it, thus never auto installing an update. You can also edit the restart notifications as to when it will show up and make it so you can dismiss it, so you can always dismiss it. Not only can you edit the restart notifications, but you can also do away with them completely, setting Windows to never auto restart and only install the updates that require a restart when a user manually reboots the system. There is a lot of control you can have over windows updates still (and even Cortona to some effects). If you are just a plebian using Windows home, you probably don't really have that much to complain about, but if for some crazy reason you are a power user using Windows home, well you can do all of this in the registry... and you can download the group policy editor files online and enable the group policy editor in the registry too.
    Actually, you can pretty much turn Windows 10 Home into Windows 10 Pro with a few hours of tinkering- or you can just use Microsoft's generic upgrade key found for free on their site to use, wait for it, Windows update to update you from Home to Pro in a few minutes* (*depending on your internet speed), and then just forever live with the Windows not activated logo, or, you know, before that, block the KMS IPs or something. Regardless, if you're using it at home, no one cares. Even if you never activate it or block the KMS servers (or spoof them, w/e) you can STILL get rid of that watermark and change your desktop background without activating Windows with just a few words in Google. Seriously, if M$ wanted to make it hard on power users, they would. This is only for regular home users who don't understand security. If you are the type of person to complain about Windows updates, and you don't do anything about it because you believe you can't then you are NOT a power user. And if you think you are a power user, then you need to take a step back and re-evaluate what power user means.

While they may not all be easy, or convenient, or even always legal, there are, none the less, many ways to get Windows 10 Pro or the Windows 10 Pro functionality with little to no money, as I've pointed out. A lot of us went through that too. I would love to sit here all night and tell you about my tech enthusiast experiences as a broke kid at a time when no summer job would buy you a gaming computer, and you got Windows keys from hardware stores... or by writing them down from the side of desktops you saw... The point is, as someone once said, where there is a will, there is a way. You want to take control of your computer? It's always possible. If you want to run Windows 10 pro bad enough, just figure it out, and do it. It might be hard, or it may be easy, but if it's worth it to you, you have to at least try to make it happen earnestly. Best of luck!

    This is one area where Windows could really do with taking a page out of Linux's book for how to do something right.
    Linux totally reverses your relationship with OS updates. For a start, the updater on Ubuntu or Mint or similar OSes isn't just for your OS, it's for all of your software installed via the package manager and even your drivers too. So you have 1 updater for everything, instead of 20 or 30 update services running for everything. Also, by default updates do not install automatically.
    On Linux Mint for example, if there are updates available, it just shows a little icon in the system tray. That's it, nothing else, just a little icon. When you are ready, with free time, you click click that, it opens up the Update Manager, shows a list of updates. By default all the updates are ticked, but you can untick all, or just untick a few few, click "Install", and the updates you selected are installed. You can also 'ignore' an update for a particular package if you never want to update it.
    All the updates install pretty quickly, and best of all, no need to reboot! Not only that, but on Linux, generally speaking, updates only fix things, add useful stuff, or make your PC more stable or faster, I can't remember an update every breaking my OS under Linux.
    Linux isn't perfect but oh boy did they get updates RIGHT.

      An old joke, but a good one.
      No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:
      1.They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.
      2.Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as
      they do so - okay, Windows does that.
      3.Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay,
      Windows does that too.
      4.Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with
      valuable programs and systems. - Sigh.. Windows does that, too.
      5.Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too
      slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. - Yup, Windows does
      that, too.
      Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental
      differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running
      on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and
      they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature.
      So Windows is not a virus.
      It's a bug.

It's why I moved over to Manjaro Deepin Linux because after you do the base updates(must be done in order) which is easy to do via the GUI updater, then reboot, then updated the Linux Kernel to 4.20.11 and today 5.0.1 via the Manjaro settings manager and then a reboot it's been smooth sailing. Don't bother with Debian/Ubuntu based distos as they have issues with newer AMD APU's, and GPU's on the 4.20 kernels, and above. The drivers for AMD hardware are built right into the newest Kernels.

      Linux has come a long way in the past couple of decades. Modern distros are plenty capable and easy to use. What bothers me is people who refuse to even attempt to learn how to use it because they're so used to Windows. Then you have the gamers who stick with Windows due to games. You do know you can run Windows in a virtual machine under Linux to play your games so that you only have to deal with the madness when you want to play some game titles.

    • @NotSoCrazyNinja
      @NotSoCrazyNinja 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Scupake If you're a gamer with a gaming rig, it should be powerful enough to run a VM. It will cut into performance some though. Wine is great when it works, I try wine for programs that only have Windows versions and no open-source alternatives and it usually works. I don't really game anymore (I guess I lost interest), but when I do, the game titles are typically either open-source or cross-platform. If it doesn't run natively in Linux, I don't even bother. Dealing with Windows is not worth it for me.

    • @NotSoCrazyNinja
      @NotSoCrazyNinja 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Scupake You can do a google search for "open source games" and find all sorts of lists. Some games are less resource-intensive than others, and some require a decent rig. In the past I liked some games like Alien Arena, 0AD, Battle For Wesnoth, Freedoom, Minetest (with a lot of mods, easy to learn how to write mods for), and Sauerbraten to name a few. Alien Arena can be a fun FPS game if you find the right server, but I stopped playing after I got so good at it I kept getting banned for "cheating" even though I wasn't lol. Battle For Wesnoth is a pretty big game. If I remember right, it's a sort of strategy game where you have to beat your opponent(s) and supports multiplayer. Minetest is kind of like a clone of Minecraft but isn't, it does its own thing. By default, it's pretty bland, but with the right mod set it can be fun and runs very well even on less than great hardware. The mods use Lua if I remember right and I learned how to write mods for it in a couple of days back when I played it so you can probably learn how to dramatically change the gameplay with a few weeks of learning. When it comes to open source games, you just have to search for them and see what is out there and what sounds interesting, then try them. Sadly, you might have to compile some games from source code, but always check your distros package manager to see if it is already available, but take note of the version in the package repo as it may be outdated. Some game developers are better than others at making it easy for the player to obtain the game.

      @NotSoCrazyNinja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, Linux package management is underrated. It can handle pretty much everything that is installed and keep everything up to date with minimal to no issue. When I first tried Linux, it was the first thing I noticed that blew me away, and that was way back in 2001. When you go to Linux, gone are the days of having to search around the internet looking for software, just to download it and install it hoping it doesn't contain spyware/adware/viruses and never being able to update it without going back to the website to see if there is an update. On the typical distro, you have some software where you can search through literally thousands of software and install them and keep them updated with ease. Updates also typically don't break things, but like with any computing software, sometimes crap happens. Luckily, there are tons of volunteers out there more than willing to help you resolve any problem you encounter on Linux.

    Full control over Windows Update? (besides that more and more updates aren't even working anymore, up to destroying your whole system!)
    As if you had full control over anything in Windows..
    You don't have control of your files, because the file browser (explorer) has become so primitive and clunky, with hugely oversized but useless elements, otherwise missing optical and informational structure, due to the removal of visible borders and a lack of maaany important features, that you actually had in Windows2000/XP.
    Also you don't have full control of your data, because MS spies on you.
    And then you don't even have control of the system - they are even bold enough for impoenting ads on an operating system. That's a sacriege, that many people don't even get.. although it shouldn't be too hard to understand: There's no excuse, for lowering productivity on a tool that was only bought and paid for productivity usage! It's like if a tv remote showed you an add, before you could use it's buttons to swap the channel, because of the ads in tv..it's mad and it's bad!
    And don't tell me that Windows is free now.. actually Microsoft forced Users, who bought and paid for Windows for decades, into switching to their current trojan horse. There's no reason for using this shit anymore besides games.. and the only hope for PCs being productive and fun again, is project proton, for making Windows obsolete and switching to Linux.

      @@johnfrancisdoe1563 Well, I said "productive and fun" and project proton is about the fun part and actually very important for giving Linux a realistic chance for becoming mainstream amongst the remaining PC users, as gaming is the one thing that PCs still are most popular for at home todays. PCs are rapidly losing importance for light office and multimedia usage to tablets, smartphones and smart tvs all the time. So I claim that without project Proton (that btw currently is already working great for many games), Linux would never succed at outdoing Windows at home in numbers (until the one day, where like no one will privately have an PC at all anymore.)

    • @TCWordz
      @TCWordz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I must admit that I'm still using Windows 7 at the moment, although I plan to "upgrade" to Windows 10 over the summer after I've finished my exams for this academic year. So I'm coming at this from an outsider's perspective.
      You said you time your reboots for Patch Tuesday. But do you have experience where you've not rebooted soon after a Patch Tuesday? I'm under the impression that that is the most likely time an automatic reboot will be started.
      The settings I'm using in Windows Update on my computer at the moment are for Windows to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them", and for me to not recieve any "Reccomended" or "Optional" updates, only "Important" (aka: security) ones.
      When such a security update is available, it will be installed when I next manually reboot my computer, without me having to take action to explicitly 'approve' the update. But if I were to hypothetically never reboot my computer again, no more updates would ever be installed: Windows will never automatically reboot to install any updates.
      I like it working like this. It means I can stay as protected as possible (vulnerable for a few days sometimes, granted) without ever actually interupting my workflow. And I can take other optional updates if I want.
      On Windows 10, is it possible for (at least security) updates to behave in the same way? That is, for them to never cause automatic reboots, but for them to be automatically installed whenever I manually reboot. I don't particularly mind what happens with feature updates (although the new deferring feature does sound attractive).
      And I absolutely know what you mean about Linux trolls! I did try switching to Linux at one point, but after jumping through all the necessary hoops to get my programs and games working, I just realised that there really wasn't much point! For all its shortcomings, Windows is what the vast majority are used to, and it works just fine 99% of the time. Now, if only Microsoft could design security updates which don't need a reboot to install... We can always dream!

      Most people don't actually have a problem with Windows 10 updates, they just feel like complaining about it because it adds value and meaning to their life. Or they run it on toaster hardware and blame the OS for being slow. I run windows 10 on modern, decent hardware and have no issues either. I usually don't notice when I get updates. I'll hit the power button and when I go to shutdown, I see "update and shutdown" option and think "huh, my PC downloaded and installed an update. I had no idea." I usually never notice it, it's that seamless. The only thing I notice on the rare chance I do notice my PC updating is my CPU fan will be spinning faster than normal, sure enough I open task manager and see a good chunk of my CPU is allocated to the update, then lastly I open the windows update section in settings and yep, a shitload of updates. But again, it's a non issue because I run windows on decent, modern hardware. I can still do whatever I want while it's downloading.
      If you use an actual computer and not dinosaur hardware or current toaster Walmart notebook hardware, windows 10 will run absolutely fine. If you don't want to use a real computer, install Linux on it and blame your machine instead of an operating system that isn't at fault. That's why I have glorious Ubuntu on my laptop (not my daily driver I mentioned earlier) because at the time I bought it, it was a mid-range $500 laptop in 2014 (but made in 2013). Yeah... Windows 10 doesn't run too well on it for obvious reasons.

      @Tsepeto Si Microsoft and Apple have tons of money to throw at development while Linux tends to be VOLUNTEER developers who don't get paid or get paid far less than the above mentioned developers. Of course it's going to be less refined. However, Linux is far more capable than Windows. The learning curve is steeper than for Windows, but using that as an excuse makes you appear too stupid to learn new things. "Oh the command line is hard", yes it is in the beginning. Everything new is hard. A huge benefit of Linux is the increased security and stability. It's hard to crash Linux. It's easy to crash Windows.

However, this very simple task cannot be performed because update messages, and eventually the update itself, keep interrupting the cycle.

      What I mean is that Windows 7 will not die and it is unlikely you would have any issues without security updates if you have a good anti-virus and firewall, although I'm not an expert to conclude that there's no problem.

    Not to mention the recent update breaks the start menu, search as well as audio. I cant use a os that is always buggy and not stable. Because now if theres a problem is it my hardware acting up or windows 10? And ontop of this MS knew about the 30% to 40% constant cpu usage from cortona and they still released it and forced people to update to it. So until win10 becomes stable im sticking to win 7 as long as i can and if i have to ill upgrade to 8.1. Hopefully when 8.1 extended support ends MS would finally get a grip on Windows 10...
