      Me too. My old laptop had to run off the power point, and I had to urgently leave somewhere, so I unplugged it, and immediately knew there would be something wrong later, and so It was that I had to learn how to create a windows boot drive from a USB for the first time, so I could reinstall windows

      You need group policy editor, in there select Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates>>System.
      Double click “Do not turn off system power after a Windows system shutdown has occurred”, it will open a new window.
      On the left hand side of the screen you will see three options: Not Configured, Enabled, and Disabled.
      Select “Enabled” and click “Ok” to save the settings.

    • @Mike504
      @Mike504 7 ปีที่แล้ว +159

      Bob Saget her hard drive did physically fail. She was literally in every day for 2 weeks. After interviewing her husband she would hold the power button every time when stepped away from the pc and had been since she bought it. I tried explaining how this is bad and the consequences. I told her to just let it go to sleep. I even set it up if she single pressed the power button it would shut off. When it finally failed she yelled at me and blamed me. So sure call me a douchbag.

      What do you need 4 Computers for?

    • @oukn6293
      @oukn6293 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      JustusLM it's a bit complex but k let's see. One is a desk computer for normal basic use, one is for gaming or video editing power if I needed, two are for ultra portable touch screen design work or art of some kind. It sounds weird but I like having them for different uses.
      They range from i3 to i7.

    • @justuslm
      @justuslm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Johnjs OK, I get your point now, but here's an idea that might actually be useful (you can consider it if you want):
      It seems to me like two computers would be fully sufficient: One with the power for gaming and editing, this one will also be used for standard tasks, essentially being the main system. You could upgrade this system when needed, this is far more cost efficient than buying new systems. _Also, having one computer that is your "baby" really is a great feeling._
      The other one would be a portable device, maybe even a laptop or "ultrabook". This one would most likely stay relevant in terms of hardware for a while since art or design work aren't that demanding.
      Back to the original point: You would only ever end up using both at once when you come home from somewhere, and did something on the portable system that needs to be copied to the main system.
      Other than that, you are always only using one.

      ah yeah because to run more than 1 pc you need to be rich. i have 3 gaming pc's 2 of which are of a little older generation and i use all 3. 1 as a main gaming rig and workstation, 1 as a Lan party pc as its a lot more solid and less likely to be damaged ad its worth alot less than the main aswell and the third is a watercooled passion project. all these pc's together in total cost me well under $1000 and i haven't found a game that the main cant play on higher settings sooooo yeah you don't need to be rich its called saving and buying used/buying smartly and this is coming from a student...

      Oh my, hibernation causes a whole host of issues if you don't couple it with regular shutdowns (like once a week). You may just have such a beast of a machine that you don't notice, but you'll see performance degradation across the board using bringing it into and out of a hibernation state presumably everyday and only rebooting every few months. Side note: Windows 10 is MUCH better than Win 7 at hibernation, so it's not nearly as noticeable if you're running Win10...Win7 though good God it was awful about that.

    Just yesterday I lost my wifi connection while windows did the "shutdown and update" routine. That resulted in windows trying to download forever. I hate those moments when it's clearly microsofts fault that you have to hard-shutdown your computer.

    • @silvanverhoeven
      @silvanverhoeven 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      developandplay Right, because it's Microsoft's fault that your WiFi dropped xD
      Okay, MAYBE there is a solution to check Download Speed to a certain degree while updating the system, so in case of a lost connection Windows just moves the update, but I am pretty sure it would have been implemented already if it were that easy

    • @developandplay
      @developandplay 7 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Silvan Verhoeven Well every other Software I know simply pauses the download or worse quits the download. Of course the lost connection isn't Microsofts fault but the absence of error handling is annoying me.

    • @silvanverhoeven
      @silvanverhoeven 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      developandplay Sure, every other program does it. But every other program is not the OS. I am not an expert, maybe it is really dumb by Microsoft not to handle this. But maybe it were too complicated or even impossible.
      Maybe you can tell how difficult it is to handle that as an OS when updating the OS. If you know for sure that it can be done easily, I am sorry for discussing this, if you don't, that might be the reason why Microsoft never implemented it

    • @howtobeanoob278
      @howtobeanoob278 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      At least on Android, the whole system update file is downloaded before starting the update... Not sure if it's the same way on Windows and you hard reset it before the update itself had actually started (as it couldn't start because the file wasn't downloaded yet)... But I do agree, they should redirect you to an error message, into a shutdown and rescheduled update.

    • @Gesteppie
      @Gesteppie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It was before windows 8. Windows 7 still offers the ability to download the update, but not install it so it can do it when you shutdown. Windows 8 was the version where Microsoft thought "everyone must be connected to the internet, lets have them all download and install at the same time!"
      One of the few reasons why I HAVE NOT updated to 10.

      Sometimes there is the option to only shutdown. I have the Fall Creators Update ready to install and I could only shutdown if I wanted to. You can also configure the usage times of your PC, during which your computer will not automatically reboot, but will instead wait until the schedule is over and then it will check if you're actually still using the computer or you can schedule the update.
      In general, you shouldn't postpone updates for too long or your computer might reboot by itself. Find a moment when you can afford to not use the computer and let it reboot. Do note that updates are your computer's first line of defence against malware and hackers.

      Have you ever even installed it in the first place? You're right though, recovery should be as simple as plugging in the device you originally installed with, chrooting and then re-emerging or reinstalling whatever file or files got corrupted.

      I've effectively done that 5 times on Gentoo, and 3 times on Funtoo. It's not too bad so long as you fix the bugs in whatever software you install quickly, and keep a nice backup of your configuration files. If you can do that the worst part of installing is waiting for packages to compile (my current install would take about a day, but that's an edge case)

    • @3800S1
      @3800S1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its actually doesn't work. Autos have a mechanism that prevents the park claw from engaging anymore than about 1-2Km/h. Any attempt will just cause it to ratchet the claw, hence the loud fast clicking sound it makes if you try.
      If it was possible to get it to engage it would instantly lock the tires as the teeth on the drum for the park are more like solid steel Lego blocks. The teeth are massive.

I run my PC upwards of a week at a stretch WITHOUT POWERING DOWN! This is like having your cake and eating it, too. I mean, I can awaken my PC in a few seconds and avoid that happy horsesh*t of cold boots, system updates, or memory checking altogether. There's one caveat: don't put your PC to sleep for more than 12 hours at a stretch. This stresses certain buffers out and will likely cause your rig to crash unexpectedly.

    I never understood why Microsoft thinks that during shut down or start up is a good time to install system updates. That's literally the two times you *don't* want it to install updates. Your computer sits idle for hours at a time while it's on, and you try to shut it down only to have a screen telling you you have to wait while it installs 208 updates (3:37).

    • @alexanderbelov6892
      @alexanderbelov6892 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You think when you power on your computer you are going to work with some useful application you need, while Microsoft think that you power it on to allow Windows to do some work for Windows.
      This is a question who owns what.
      I used Ubuntu (Linux) for several years. It has update application highlighted in tray when some set of software requires update. Every properly installed application with OS registered repository obtains updates from their own repositories. This single OS application shows you that some application(s) or OS itself got an update. If you have time to do the update you start update procedure explicitely, and you don't need to worry that some of your hundreds installed applications probably need update too after OS got its own updates.

    Linus is spot on but as a systems programmer, I can tell you that the operating systems vendors could make shut down much faster for the common case where you don't have files modified and don't have data waiting to be flushed to file systems, etc. With a better design, shutdown could normally happen in less than a second.
