VINTAGE LANDFALL?! Retreat to Hagra / Crab Mill Combo with Oboro, Palace in the Clouds (Vintage MTG)

- I play a Magic: the Gathering Online Vintage league with a Retreat to Hagra and Hedron Crab combo deck (Note: sometimes this is called "Crab Shack"). The deck seeks to use Fastbond and Oboro, Palace in the clouds to make infinite land drops, and hence infinite landfall triggers. This Vintage deck still has a good chunk of the power 9 like Black Lotus and Ancestral Recall, but it also can just win via mill. Ever seen a Vintage MTG deck with bounce lands and Horn of Greed?

There was a Horn of Greed list back in 2016 at Eternal Weekend.
One cool interaction with this deck is that since fastbond deals damage to you, a glacial chasm gives you infinite land plays at no cost of life.
Fastbond is such a sweet card but very difficult to find a home in Vintage. On one of iamactuallylvl1’s videos I mentioned that Enchantress might be the right home for it. There are some powerful enchantments like Rest in Peace and Stony Silence that shut down lots of Vintage decks. But Justin pointed out that Hullbreacher effects, and now Sheoldred, are plentiful in the format and make Enchantress a difficult deck to justify playing.

Ayyy, vintage land shenanigans! First vintage deck I ever proxied was landstorm with lotus cobra and fastbond, so this feels right up my alley!
Trade Routes has been one of my favorite cards since I was a kid, love to see it doing work today

I've been enjoying the inclusion of pointing out the best matches at the start of the video. Frankly, if you hadn't said that match four was the one to watch I probably would've turned it off after match three!

@@TheBCRob vintage is vintage. Deck might not do amazing but it's still content for one of the 2 formats where the card is playable to my knowledge

@@carrikmcnerlin1770 I mean it is more then viable in legacy it is just banned, and it is only legal in 2 formats(luckily one of those is commander so that helps drive up the price).

48:59 Hushbringer is probably just there to shut down initiative. Also hits the occasional Thought Monitor , Emri and Prized Amalgams but that seems anecdotical. Mostly looks like the opponent is just trying stuff out.

So, acknowledging that the idea is probably bad, but what if: Crucible seems like a great thing to be doing with Fastbond. Horn of Greed is also good there. These are both artifacts that cost 3... Which is the amount Workshop produces. I'm picturing some kind of Fastbond-Shops hybrid deck.

Worth considering Jaddi Offshoot for the Hedron Crab loops, or maybe Ramunap Excavator for Fetchlands with Fastbond in case you don't have Oboro. Would also work with Wasteland/Strip Mine to destroy all your opponent's lands.

Used to play an infinite turns combo in extended during "judgement" standard, with Horn, Explore, Gush, Time warp and Battlefield Scrounger. Yes, i am that old. I think it played Traumatize too as a one of. Not a big tournament kind of deck, more like an "i'm going to blow your mind" at the LGS kind of deck. Anyway, i like this deck XD

Boshnroll has the god ability to call a card and have it be his top card. (probably has something to do with how he mostly plays decks with cantrips).
But that doesn't explain the ThrabenU curse of being able to call out the exact one-of that can still beat him from where he is and the opponent always having it.

59:40 By playing Glacial Chasm, you won't even take damage from Fastbond anymore, so this should be a deterministic kill (provided the opponent really has no interaction left). You don't have any way to remove Horn of Greed, but no matter how your deck is stacked, you should be able to kill with either damage or mill before decking out first, especially with Timetwister still floating around in there somewhere.

would it be worth trying Dig Through Time over Cruise for this deck since it isn't a critical mass deck like storm but is closer to something like 2 Card Monte?
Yeah, I could see that. You could even play both.
I love lands and the general idea here, but of course this deck isn't nearly broken enough for Vintage. I think Hadron Crab or the black enchantment are getting in each other's way, you only need one way to win and you need as much speed, resilience and consistency to your combo as possible.

I wonder if this deck wants white for enlightened tutor. 2 (3 if you count trade winds) of the key combo pieces are enchantments, and it potentially opens up other sideboard lines. That might be asking too much of an already stretched mana base though. EDIT: I wonder if Zur the Enchanter can do something here. It's probably too slow, but all of the combo pieces can also be picked up by him trigger.
with the mana base already being extremely strained by oboro and bounce lands its probably way too greedy to stretch into white for either card. esp bc zur at 3 mana is competing in the format with cards like tinker and yogs will

And you have to untap with it? And it doesn't actively kill your opponent, having 1 power. And opposition agent. It just feels bad...
Obligatory algorithmic contribution
Would it be worth running 1 Mystic Sanctuary to take infinite turns with Trade Routes + Time Walk? Not familiar enough with Vintage to know if the card is just a tap land in too many situations or not.
It's somewhat playable in this deck. Most of the time, vintage decks don't play enough Lands to make it good, which is why its not really played. Its also often just really slow.

Not a lot I suspect, because there are more powerful things you can do. Although that does sound fun, and there probably are some people out there who are doing that.

round 3 after making you click through everything in game 1, I would have made my opponent kill me with key vault
at 28:15, you mention that you want to bounce oboro first to play around force of vigor (so you "at least get to play one extra land"), but you didn't actually accomplish anything with that right, you still got only one mill trigger for the turn? I think the right line was to bounce and replay Oboro first, then bounce it again, and only then play Fastbond, giving you a round of priority to play a second land before your opponent gets a chance to blow up the enchantment. That would have given you the one more landfall trigger you needed to win that game

Milling yourself matters for Yawgmoth's Will and Delve spells.
If you're gonna be milling yourself so aggressively with crab, I'd think to play echo of eons over time twister. But idk, I don't vintage.
