Thanks Luke. That was very interesting. I’m about 12 months behind you in my journey and videos like yours are very motivating. Everyone seems to have a different idea of what “fluency” means. I’ll be happy when I can communicate in Spanish with minimal misunderstanding.
Great points in the beginning. I've been studying Spanish since July 2021 and I've never stopped to take stock of how cool it is thay spanish is a part of my brain and that I used to not understand it whatsoever!
Not technically. I started actually by speaking (by way of listening to the Kieren Ball podcast - ouch!) and then read Madrigals Magic Key to Spanish (grammar - ouch! Really enjoyed it though), but after that I never did a ton of speaking and really have just been consuming spanish content as soon as I entered the early intermediate stage. Looking into Dreaming Spanish now.@@Lukelearnsspanish
Thank you for posting your progress bro it really makes an impact for me. As far as fluency I would say, to me, fluency is being able to ask what something means or describe a word that you don’t know and ask how to say it in that language. Because if you can do that and generally understand it then [to me] that person is fluent 😅
Mate listening to you speaking english, I can tell you articulate very well and that will be a great advantage to your spanish learning journey. I am learning spanish (basic level) as well and let’s keep improving !
Hey, Luke! I've started back at learning Spanish. I laid it down a little while ago and am picking it back up so I can better understand the Latin music I listen to. It's so cool to see someone else on a Spanish learning journey, and to know I'm not alone. Las palabras y frases son un poco difícil pero creo que podemos hacer esto! Buena suerte, acho!
Interesting subject, fluency". I think it's best described when one can express themselves and native speakers have no problem understanding the point that person is trying to make, and vice versa when you've learned your target language to a point where you have absolutely no problem understanding what native speakers are saying to you. Having said that, being "fluent" in two other languages besides English, I can tell you firsthand it's very humbling to visit different countries of your target language and just speaking unrehearsed on the spot to people from many different walks of life. And without judging I can tell you when you're speaking to people with not much of an education and they don't consider you're a foreigner, aka using a lot of colloquial slangs, you will often walk away from a situation like that questioning if your fluent or not. What I have learned in my language journey, regardless of the level of my target language it's literally impossible to understand all people from all walks of life" fluently".
This is such a fresh content to see for a language learning journey! Thanks for sharing. I think “fluency” the way that you put it makes an interesting debate because you converse really well but not consider yourself as fluent yet. A lot of times esp on social media, people consider being able to have basic convo or learning just a few months as fluent/polyglot. I think that’s misleading and can make people discouraged on learning new language. Because having a deep convo about particular niche topic/being able to read & understand in that language is so different than just having basic convo and that’d be fluency imo. I’m learning Spanish myself so this is very interesting takes.
Thanks so much for the comment, and yes I try to make my content as real as possible. I am not here to impress anyone, just someone who wants to show their progress and what is realistically possible for a regular person to achieve.
ps.. you have a great attitude towards language learning, like you say it's all about being relaxed and enjoying what you're doing it shouldn't be work or stress. Sigue así :) Mucha suerte !
Thanks I appreciate this comment very much. I think its so important to stay relaxed when learning something new and just enjoy the process. It should not feel like a subject in school or anything like that in my opinion.
Everyones on their own journey and has different lives. Luckily in my circumstances I have had a lot of time to dedicate towards learning spanish. As long as your enjoying the process I think thats the main thing.

Very nice. That sounds like a good goal. Are you using the CI method for learning?
Yes I am. Mainly Dreaming Spanish. Pablo is my cult leader!

Thanks for the comment and yes I find it the same when I watch other language learners on youtube, it can be very motivating.

As a learner myself, I will say you are definitely getting there fast, Luke! 😁

I've done the thing of changing the language in a film to see the difference too! It feels so weird 😆
Man ..keep it up!!
👍
Do you feel burnt out speaking Spanish after a while? If I speak Spanish for like an hour, at the very end I start feeling incredibly burnt out.
Yeah 100%, it does get easier I find over time, since right now I find my brain has to concentrate much less when picking up what my tutor was saying.
