Explanation: Eugene Shoemaker was a geologist and founder of modern planetary science. He studied craters on Earth and on the moon and realized that they were created by asteroid impacts. Shoemaker was the lead geology researcher for Apollo missions, and he also helped train the Apollo astronauts who went to the moon. He himself was a candidate for an Apollo Moon flight, but was disqualified after being diagnosed with Addison's disease. Later in life, he said, "Not going to the moon and hitting it with my own hammer has been the biggest disappointment in life." Schoenmaker spent much of his later years searching for undiscovered impact craters around the world. He died on July 18, 1997 in a car accident in Australia, where he studied craters. In recognition of his scientific achievements, part of his ash was brought to the moon by the Lunar Prospector spacecraft in 1999. His final resting place is close to the moon's south pole, in the Shoemaker crater named after him. The shoemaker's urn was engraved with a quote from Romeo and Juliet: "And when he will die... Unpack it and cut it out into small asterisks And he will make the face of heaven so beautiful That the whole world will be in love with the night And don't show worship to the bright sun." He is the only man buried on a celestial body other than earth. After his death, he was finally able to go where he always wanted to be. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Floor and Tuomas were not satisfied with the ending at first. After Floor tinkered with it in her home studio and with the choir added, it became this masterpiece. Tuomas however had his doubts if this could be done live, but Floor convinced him that she could do it. The several live performances available on TH-cam show this undisputable.
I love in one of the live Shoemaker performances, you can see Tuomas mouthing “WOW!” I don’t remember which one, there are a few. But it stuck with me, like he’s thinking “We’ve got a MONSTER!”
I know Tuomas get's ALL the credit and he is an awesome composer. But he comes up with lyrics and an idea of where the music has to go. All other bandmembers help making the music a real masterpiece. Floor has done so much to older songs to get them way better (Ghost love score, devil in the deep dark ocean, 7 days to the wolves etc etc)
Lovely reaction to a great song. From Nightwish's most recent album, Human Nature. One of my top 5 Nightwish songs. Song is a tribute to Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science. He is especially famous for discovering asteriod impact craters on Earth and the Moon. He trained the Apollo astronauts on their geology tasks and hoped to become an astronaut himself but was rejected for medical reasons. After his death a portion of his ashes were placed in a small urn/capsule and included in the NASA Lunar Prospector mission. They were then placed in a crater named for him in the Moon's southern hemisphere. He is the only human whose remains reside on another celestial body. This is probably the hardest song Floor has ever sung with the odd time signatures, rapid pitch changes and dense lyrics. Tuomas said he set out to challenge Floor, Marko, and Troy vocally on Human Nature and he succeeded. Supposedly when Floor first saw thevocal melodies she asked Tuomas, Where I am supposed to breathe? When the album first came out the band expressed the opinion that they might not be able to preform this live. They successfully did in the first virtual concert in 2021 and then kept it in the setlist for their Human Nature tour. The lyric video is my favorite not only for the music but the epic visuals, especially at the end with Floor's equally epic operatic ending, but the live performances, especially from Hellfest and Deichbrand are stunning as well. The quote from Romeo and Juliet that is spoken is taken from the inscription on the capsule that holds a portion of Shoemaker's ashes on the moon and was chosen by his wife who was a famous astronomer as well. It is read by Tuomas's wife, Johanna Kurkela, a famous Finnish pop/folk singer who you heard in your Lifetime of Adventure reaction. She has a beautiful singing voice and is worth checking out either in her solo stuff or projects like Altamullan Road, Auri, or Eye of Melian. Auri is project with Tuomas and Troy that creates beautiful atmospheric, folky music. Some of my favorites are The Space Between, Desert Flower, and The Valley. This song is not only a tribute to Mr. Shoemaker but an ode to human exploration and our need to push out into the Universe. Laudato Si Ad Astra is Latin for Praise to the Stars. I spent 15 years working in the field of Manned Space Flight and hope this song inspires others to continue that work.
Hello, ladies. My own piece to add is this: When this song was released, Nightwish actually paid Mrs. Shoemaker a visit before she passed away, and played this song for her. She told the band that it was a very fitting tribute to her late husband, and the scientific work he did. You honestly cannot receive greater praise than that.
@@k.l.7788 : I'm going to be honest, I've tried looking for the article I read it in, and cannot locate it. Maybe it's because I'm on a phone, IDK. I do remember reading about it, tho. Tuomas wrote the entire Human:||:Nature album with the idea of stretching every member of the band. This one was meant to stretch Floor and Kai. The spoken-word portion was read by Johanna Kurkela, Tuomas' wife. "Laudato si ad astra" translates from the Latin as "praise be to the stars".

When this song came out, we didn't expect to see Nightwish doing this one LIVE, because it is very difficult to sing with those up and downs lyrics (Kathy you were right about that) and stunning ending, but she figgered it out where and how to breathe and does it LIVE

Just another work of pure genius by a group of geniuses. Much of what we know of the geology of the moon is due to Eugene Shoemaker, the only man whose remains are on the moon. The level of musicianship and drive to create masterpieces in this band is unparalleled. Eugene Shoemaker? Shoemaker/Levi 9 Comet? Jupiter? He was training as an Astronaut, but stopped for medical reasons, he was the backbone of NASA's Planetary Geology. He wanted to bang his Geology hammer on the rocks of the Moon... His wife and colleagues asked for his ashes to be sent to the Moon, hence the words, spoken by the wife of Tuomas :)
