Some day when your back goes out for good, or you suffer terrible knee problems, why don't you let the whole world you are no longer a man? You WILL do that, right? No, you won't. I bet the grandkids really enjoyed that ride. I've seen a guy pull an old boxspring mattress behind a tractor to smooth our a dirt road...it works fine...for fine grading, Just gotta make sure its brought back in the bedroom before someone's ass hit the floor unexpectedly. Did it more than once on a boxspring mattress at my girlfriend's grandmother's house in Detroit years ago. We'd bounce horizontally two feet high on that. So much fun, and brought back memories. Thank goodness the house was two doors away from the fire station, just in case someone hurt themselves. This is a true story. And that nite in the living room we were watching the black group from Detroit, The Spinners singing "Rubberband Man. It was that nite we bounced on the spring mattress for the first time. Girlfriend was watching her grandma's house while she was away. Man, that was a long time ago. But hey, seems like just last year.

Watching this video made my back hurt. We used a loader to fill the spreader. I think you use coarse sand as it doesn’t hold moisture as well, makes it easier to spread. This makes a huge difference when you’re mowing. If only I had the time!

    I rigged a broom system on a sand pro. Worked great and put the sand down fast and level. Of course, it was a hydraulic lift and very stiff so the level was easy to achieve. Great video.

    Keep at it and your lawn will be higher than the slab of your house and then all the water will drain INTO your house. Where I'm at, we want our lawns to slope down to the street with our slabs at least 3-4 ft higher than the street level. We had 60" of rain over a couple of days and the water didn't come even close to my house. Some people who lived in subdivisions whose slabs were close to street level did end up being flooded though.

      You would be fighting a losing battle in Florida just due to the sinkholes... :)
      I was in the Orlando area when the Winter Park one happened... Quite impressive... Just look at a satellite map of the area and you'll notice a lot of very round lakes. More than likely, they are the results of sinkholes over thousands of years... Most of Florida is basically a sand filled coral reef that is now above water that acts as a speed bump for hurricanes headed into the Gulf (thus protected the rest of us Gulf Coast residents). Thank you Florida... We really appreciate your sacrifice...

      Actually I doubt he would have that problem. Because he’s adding pure sand...his lawn drains like a sieve providing the underlying slope is adequate and it appears to be.
      That’s why it’s good to use clean white beach sand when doing this. It slowly over time self compacts and will not hold water by simply adding a mm here or there. The water will move through that sandy base like a funnel.

    I bet you could drag around a 10ft x 3ft chunk of chain link fence and it'd do the job and be lighter.
    It'd cut the time down too since it'd be a big square chunk of many contact points....a bit more than the 3 rails on that homemade thing.

    You should mount the broom heads on the back of your drag grate. This way the front metal knocks down the piles upon impact and the brooms push the sand down into the canopy as they pull behind.

    • @lawnrebel
      @lawnrebel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah.. I am not going to give them the satisfaction by responding to their retarded comments. The best time of year would be in the spring or in the fall. When the grass is growing the strongest. It needs a good month or more before it goes into the harsh season be it summer or winter. Thanks for watching.

    While watching this, I was remembering the old farm days and a manure spreader behind a tractor. I’ll bet it could broadcast spread sand as well. Of course the big tractor would play havoc with the already fairly smooth lawn.

    Connor, What kind of dirt do you have in your area? I've got heavy clay soil, I'd like to try this out, but I'm wondering if the sand will actually work itself in without being turned, or just run off in the next rain. I've got mostly KY Bluegrass, 80-90%. Also, in the years you've been doing this, did the sand ever change your pH to the point where the grass started flagging in health?
    I like you that drag is also a perfectly good looking fence when you're not using it. Nice bit of kit.

    • @EdwardVarner
      @EdwardVarner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      M Larsen I’m from GA and farmed for a bit of my life in our very heavy red clay. Adding sand is a very tricky procedure for clay. Too small of a grain size and you will turn your clay into concrete. The best thing for clay is organic matter (compost etc). Buy a truck load of compost and do what he did and you will probably be better off than using sand. Take a few samples (4 per 1000sqft of yard) to your local Ag extension, they will tell you if adding sand to your soil type will work or not. Good luck 🍀👍

    I did something similar to level topsoil across an area whee I had a ditch culvert installed, then filled in. However, I took one of my 5ft high 4ft wide chain link fence gates off of the fence, ran climbing rope through the hinges, rigged 2x4s tol hold bricks on too for weight, then attached the whole rig to my riding lawn mower. Worked like a charm.
