Once I get my bobcat, quad bike, trailer, levelling equipment, landscape rake, tons of sand and my reinforced driveway, I’ll be ready to go! Looks great 👍
It's all about the entertainment factor for most. Think about HGTV..... How man is people who watch HGTV are really going to do a quarter of what they show on TV.. Very little. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the great info. I'm trying to have the best lawn on the street and one guy has his looking like a pool table. Now I know my next move to take him down.
Oh my gosh. I saw this video years ago and remembered your lawn. I went on vacation and was biking around town and saw this house that had a perfectly flat lawn and a pretty house. I literally told my friends I thought I saw it on a TH-cam video. I went on Google Earth and I was right! This lawn really is as great in person.
Fantastic job man!!! Amazing! I used to work at a golf course and you have it down. You stated you improve every season and one thing you could do is put broom heads on the topside of your drag. Once level and the sand dry, flip it to the broomhead side and drag it to work the sand in. Best of luck! I will be subscribing, awesome content!
Wow. Just happened on this video. Moved to a house where the backyard needs serious leveling. Just about to get to soil, but this is the answer. Plus, I live in FL and all the yards are sand any way! Heck, there are 22 million people here all living on sand. Thanks!
I just saw this video. It really is a great video. Most people think that leveling and flattening out or yards this it takes excavation compound first. remember ANY type of sand even on the cheapest of budgets is the ONLY way to accomplish this job. Well done showing all of the different ways to do it. 1 suggestion, use a cement rake, it will replace your landscape take forever!
Great job sir!! My clients always panic on the day we scalp them and apply the sand. I tell them I'm blocking their phone number for 10 days and then I'll call them. It works every time
Add a piece of chain linked fencing behind your drag, the same size as your drag, and it helps out a lot. You won’t have to drag quite as much with the added assistance. You might have to weave a piece of rebar, or a pipe through the very rear of the fencing to make it lay flat and give it a little extra weight, but it works out great. One time I burned an old box spring from a bed to where it was just a bunch of springs exposed, and then through some cinder blocks on the top of it for weight, and that works too... lol
I had a very lumpy and bumpy lawn, and it was due to worm castings. These are small mounds of dirt left by worms. The mounds are usually 1" to 2" wide and 1/4 to 1/2" high. They are hard to see because they are under the grass, but you can feel them when you step on them. The best way I could find to get rid of them was to slowly shuffle my feet across the lawn to feel for them, and when I found one, I would spray it will a jet spray from the garden hose to erode it down. That method worked well, but it took forever. I have a small lawn, but I probably found 1000 mounds to spray, and it took about 8 hours of walking and spraying. The good news is that it saved me from dumping thousands of pounds of sand in my yard!
Just did this in my lawn a couple of weeks ago. Spread about ten yards of washed sand over about 5k square feet of hybrid Bermuda. Two days ago, hurricane Laura dumped probably 6” or more of rain on it. An hour after the rain stopped, I could’ve easily mowed the lawn. I love how sand firms up when it rains.
The first thing I noticed in the opening minutes were the brown bald areas. My lawn is not level even though I have tried over the years. But my whole lawn is lush green grass. I love healthy grass more than flat dirt. You have done an amazing work - Each to their own. :)
I rehabbed by back yard this spring and I had to bring in about 10 tons of fill. And I managed to blend and level it all with a home made drag box I made out of 2x10 and fence fabric. towed behind my tractor. Worked amazing but I like the metal drag idea better. I can make one at work and I think I’ll do that for the fall top dress.
Thanks for making this video. This will help me on my lawn. This is by far the best video I've seen on leveling a lawn. Simple and to the point. Well done.
Another great ‘how to video’! The new grass in cotton wood corner looks like it has come on really well. Hopefully the cores have broken down for your first reel mow. 👍
7:37 - this is very true, you can bury Bermuda in sand and it'll grow straight through it. I've been fixing 6-7 inch ruts in my yard with Soil3's leveling mix and the Bermuda has grown right through it all.
Connor was the first “lawn” channel I happened across and became fascinated with his no bs style. I’ve always been into building shows and Connors videos on the she shed deserve more credit and time.
Had my drag built using your model, and made it deeper as you said you would do if you had to build another. Spread out 10cu yds of a compost (food waste/municipal food waste and NOT human waste) sand and clay mix with a manure shovel and a tow dump cart with my lawn tractor. The drag worked very well and the low areas I filled in are as flat as can be after a few passes, but the piles of this material were a bit too much to move without knocking them down with the same dump cart with a few cinder blocks in it and in the dump position (a drag on wheels :)). Thanks for the tips on the design, but mine cost a bit more than $50, I guess steel is a bit more pricey these days :). Not sure how much it weighs but I know that it's north of 100 lbs. Anyway, great tool to have for the long haul! Thanks again!
We sit that too when we lived in Atlanta. We lived on on a golf course and top dressed our lawn 7 years in a row. It was cut with a reel mower and looked like glass. 👍😊
To make the drag work a bit quicker on the piles at the start you could put x2 20ltr drums on either end and have them fitted with a tap so you can drain a bit of water (weight) out as the sand gets thinner. 🤙🏼🇦🇺
I've got a small area 70sq yards put down to artificial grass. Great for the kids to play on but I do appreciate the time and effort that goes into keeping a good lawn. Nice video
My ex-wife found a way to eliminate my fun hobbies and any attempt to seek adventure. I feel your pain watching a grown man dedicate so much energy just to make a lawn look perfect. 3 years ago, I traded in the ex for a newer model and never looked back. My lawn looks mediocre now but life has never been better. Excellent video and editing, just don't forget to focus on what really counts as life is short.
I can't wait for the summer for this reason. I'm in South Carolina where the heat is miserable. Wife and kids aside, my spring and summer revolves around the "6 B's": Baseball, barbecue, bermuda, beer, bwhiskey, and my Baroness.
Never knew this was a thing. I’m a handy guy but even if I was retired today I would still never do this. It’s just taking the lawn to another level that i wouldn’t want to tackle.
I watched your video about building the drag when it was originally posted. But I thought heavier is always better so I built it out of the heaviest gauge 3” material I could find. Don’t assume that heavier is better. It can actually rip the lawn out if the high spots if the lawn is at all wet and you don’t have a fairly level lawn to begin with. I’m in my first season of a completely new lawn and it’s been incredibly dry even with occasional watering. Irrigation gos in this fall and then I need to figure out how to get rid of the massive amount of crab grass that grew from the big box store seed I used. Live and learn...
Nice, but just an idea. You could lighten your workload by adapting the levelling frame that you've fabbed up and add a hopper with a grid/ holes in the bottom that just drops an adequate amount of sand before / into the leveling grid. That way you could just load up the hopper and tow it with your ATV and distribute the sand and level all in one. Could be much easier. Or maybe fill up a trailer with sand, and attach the leveller to the back of the trailer and dump a load of sand off the back of the trailer with a push rod or something whilst you're pulling with the ATV.. Either way, hope you find a method that makes the process easier for you, looks good keep it up 👍
This definitely isn't as easy as it seems. Definitely have to have the right equipment and cut grass super short. I had a hard time finding the correct sand and was charged way too much. I called the cement companies and they didn't know why I was calling them. Lol.I ended up paying 300.00 for 8 tons of crappy sand that ended up giving me a yard full of weeds. Putting that Honda 90 to work! The engine is based on the old 70cc engine from the 70s. A truly underappreciated and durable workhorse of an engine.

Your leveling videos get better every time. Extra wheaties in the morning might help with tight things.
... I hear the good cardio workout going on there too ...
I appreciated your use of the word "broom" as a verb. I say the same thing, and people just don't get it - it's completely different from sweeping!
