  • Today we start to take a look at what is going on with our Range Rover Camper. When we went to move it from the commercial shop we fired it up and the dreaded oil light was on. We start with the simple stuff but it appears it may need more than that.

    I’m gonna go with the pump! Shop is looking great. Looking forward to seeing that rig out here one of these days.

      Me too. Can’t wait to get out that way again and happy to have some more people to meet up with out there.

    Why does most oil in the states come in quarts , but here in the the UK it's usually 4/5L containers .
    In fact the oil for my 300 Tdi the last time came in a perfectly sized 7L drum.
    My guess is they used the old pump in the rebuild and didn't check the clearances.

      We do get some in gallons/5L jugs as well. Odd thing on the VR1 I used is locally it is cheaper to buy it in single quarts than the 5 qt. jugs. I haven’t ran across 7L ones, that is kind of neat as that seems to be right around what most European stuff seems to take. At the shop we used a lot of 20L ones.

      Haha. Yes I did. The other thumb has a broken nail as well. Comes in streaks I guess. I should just paint them.

    I feel the oil may have drained out the pump because it sat so long. It may not be faulty. I reckon you take the distributor out & prime the pump with a drill or similar and see how that goes before you remove the sump. It can't hurt to try, plus you wont waste the new oil.
    We would call the workshop as being at the "frame" stage, not skeleton. We are a bit more sophisticated in Australia - just saying.........
    I just went to your internet site and saw you were also the merch model Joe. No expense spared on buxom blonds!!

      I’m just a midwestern hack here in the US haha. Just kidding definitely not correct on any of my construction terms though.
      I think the pump did run dry, either way I’ll have another video with the condition of the gear up today shortly.
      I may have a good modeling career if my construction gig doesn’t pan out. Haha.

    I agree with you on the split gear! Years and years ago on my old Range Rover I had the same problem

      I’d almost bet on it if I was a betting man. Was hoping for something simple haha.

    Gears its common unless the they didn't put an o-ring on the sump

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think gear too. I’m guessing if the o ring was missing that would have shown earlier, but who knows.

    I vote for oil pump gear, unless someone left a rag in the pan thats blocking the oil pump sucktion

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man, a rag would be a good story at least haha.

      @@LostCauseRanch a friend couldn’t get his dirt bike started and ask me to take a look at it. I started to pull the carb off and found a rag he has stuffed in there to keep the dirt out when he changed to air filter. You never know…

    On my old 3.5 V8 I could not get it to prime. Had to take the top off the oil pump and pack it with Vaseline (Petroleum grease) because it dissolves into the oil when up to temperature and then you just dump the oil and refill. Worked first time! Could also be a blocked pick up pipe?

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it may have lost its prime, have it off now and I'll have another video showing the gear up soon.

    I’m going to guess that the oil pickup tube is not in right. 🤷‍♀️

    Just because it was a fresh rebuild doesn’t mean they didn’t slap the old oil pump gear in there so I’m going with that. Remember I told you mine still doesn’t make enough pressure after changing it out, as of yesterday I think I lost a lifter or some thing because of it🙃 tick tick tick. I guess it didn’t like the spirited drive to the redline I gave it yesterday.

      I wonder if yours has worn cam or rod bearings losing pressure. They spent the money on an Atlantic British short block. Hopefully and a new gear haha.

    • @FlawedOffroad
      @FlawedOffroad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LostCauseRanch I suppose it’s possible. I checked the cam bearings at least to make sure they didn’t walk when I had the pan off. Highly doubt I will put any money into that motor though so I might have to look up your LS swap parts list

    Hiya, take the oil pressure sender or switch out, pressure feed by hand pump of whatever, about a litre (ok quart) of oil into the engine then refill the engine to required amounts AFTER refitting as full of oil as you can new filter, by backfeeding a large amount of fresh oil it not only feeds oilways but must prime the oil circuits/ give it a try.. On 2litre ford pinto race lumps i built I ran the hex drive rod the oil pump in a drill to pre lube the motor, Can you do this on a rangie lump ? I only had diesel ones so dont know.. Good luck/ Ian UK.

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That might be worth a shot as well, I never though to feed back through the sensor port. I think being this is a distributor motor you might be able to pull that and rig something to spin the pump.
