I'm a Chinese American woman living in the South. Even before COVID, I get stared at or called out even in normal places like the grocery store or at the office. Since the COVID outbreak in the US, I've been careful not to go out alone unless I'm in a very public space. No one should have to live like this, under a shadow of fear.
Race, gender, sexuality... These are all labels used to divide us. Everyone feels underrepresented or mistreated in some way. Can we please make an effort to overcome these and protect each other? Let's stand up for one another and stop hate now, before another label is in the headlines.

All hate crime is bad, but if we can not solve the most prominent hate crime, that has been over due for solving, how can we address and try to and try to tackle another one that seem to be influenced from a virus. So well said, Trevor, thank you! Almost two years ago, my Korean teacher told us in class that she faces harrassment on a daily basis and once when we all went out after class, we experienced it first hand. On the street, several random guys came over and asked her "how much for one hour?" or "konichiwa pretty woman" and stuff like that all the way to the café we went to. It was obnoxious to see. I had to turn my car around in this parking lot today. There were two older Asian people standing by their cars, respectively. I swung my car around near them, heading toward the entrance. They looked at me with such fear in their eyes. At first I was puzzled, "Why did they both just stop, turn, and look at me like that? It's a routine thing, a car making a u-turn...?" But then I realized, they didn't know if I was going to shout something mean to them, or shoot them, or run them over, or some other violence. I felt sick to my stomach that that even crossed their minds, due to what's going on right now. The fear in their eyes, it just haunts me now.

The police say "He was at the end of his rope" because reporters ask them "Why did he do it?" What f**ing difference difference does it make which of our "rich tapestry of reasons" (love that phrase, I'm going to keep stealing it) this particular evildoer chose? Reporters act as though the shooter is the "interesting" part of the story and the victims are the "not news worthy" part of the story. We need media that leaves these people alone, ignores them, and makes it clear that no possible problem could justify the actions they've taken. Media companies love to claim they are the most attuned part of our society, and they need re-tuning about this sort of violence. The victims are the only news worthy part of any tragedy like this.

I sometimes think, "And all of this is happening because a Black man was elected to the Oval Office--TWICE". And I have lived long enough to tell you that although there have been serious racial tensions, it has not reached this level of paranoia and crazy since I was a child.
Two white persons were also killed in this situation. I have argued that although this was definitely a tragedy (ALL lives matter), one cannot ignore that the majority killed were NOT. The Asian community is alarmed but everyone thinks they should just shut up and go about their business. I simply do NOT understand why people refuse to understand the history of this country and why it might cause members of minority groups to react with fear and apprehension when events like this occur.
I am very concerned for the future of this nation because it refuses to confront it's history, deal with it and emerge stronger.
