I'm a teacher. I cannot tell you how many times I have looked at my classroom and thought "how would I react in case of an active shooter? Would I be quick? Would I freeze? How would I protect kids when I am a woman and 5 feet tall to top it off. How do I leave kids behind if they are hit? Is this window by my desk a weak spot in my class" There are many more of those questions. I have had other jobs. I never had these thoughts before. I am tired of the active shooter drills, the training, the videos, having to think about barricating doors, using tables as shields, and having to look around the classroom for possible weapons to defend ourselves. That is not something kids and teachers should have yearly trainings on, but we do. Would I try to defend my kids, absolutely. But, that isn't normal. No, one exit wouldn't work, no you should not arm the teachers, we are educators. Cops on campus have not worked in many cases, and we don't need more religion on campus. We need roofs, books, chairs, materials, more emotional support for our kids, we need more supplies for homeless kids, and programs to better engage our boys and girls. Turning a school into a war zone with bullet proof tapestries and shock glass or whatever sounds like the dumbest thing I ever heard. Please remember schools are for education and our kids need to feel safe while learning and not feel like they can get shot at any minute.
@jmo0725 for most people. There are multiple exits in case of fire, you do know that, right? Unless you think the fire marshal is somehow working for him.
So your thought is what? Disarm the entire population? You think as a whole we have become enlightened to the point where evil no longer exists. Hows that working out in Ukraine. Or chicago.
Thank you Ms. Serrano. Thank you for caring for and teaching our future. Unfortunitly, teaching in this country is a thankless job, instead of the invaluable profession that it is. So here's to you Ms. Serrano and to all other hard working professional teacher out there. 🥂
Just a quick note on the whole "one way in" policy. Ignoring for the moment that it makes it easier for a shooter to prevent escape and creates nightmare scenarios for the fire department, right now every school I've ever been too only ever has 1 Door that students can enter anyways. There are other doors, but they all require a special key to open from the outside and automatically lock after they close. The main entrance is usually locked and is unlocked electronically by administrators once they verify who is entering. Yet we still have shootings. Thus the "one entry" policy is already a failure.
Chicago, ny, California, Portland, ect all have strict gun laws yet they still have the highest rates of gun violence. Looks like common sense gun laws are already a failure. I guess the only question left is why you seem to have been to so many schools I'm supposed to use your experience of them as proof.
The 1 entrance/exit thing is a double edged sword. Once the bad guy is inside, there's no escape for the victims trapped inside if the entrance is blockaded. A little arson and _everybody_ is dead.
@@lahays4324 the theory isn't just a one way in one way out bit, it's also about having security there as well. There needs to be a bridge between any gunman and their targets.

Those trained officers knew if they step into the building, it can set off the shooter causing more deaths. The teacher can wait for a moment and shoot the criminal when he or she is distracted. I don’t believe teachers should be armed, but allowed to be if they wanted to as well as other school employees. These gun-free zones are idiotic.
The teachers are overworked and underpaid and now they are expected to get in a firefight? Those people are delusional. Edited because it was unclear I meant teachers. I goofed.
I was just thinking the same here in Denmark - AND our schools have lots of doors where kids run in and out freely, there's not a single armed grown-up (and the kids never have to participate in drills in case of shooting). It's heartbreaking that this keeps happing in the US, and nothing changes :(
in the US the idea of 'freedum™!!' is everyone living in a fort armed to the teeth all pointing guns at each other. Its odd considering that most of the rest of the world see freedom as never having to think about being shot in the first place

You with your reason and complex and convoluted logic - do you think this is a math game and time for "thinking"? It's simple - both kids and teachers should have miniguns and RPGs, so when a shooter comes with an AR-15, boom - target destroyed.
"Does he realise, that when you close the doors to trap the shooter, he is already in the school and you trap the other kids with him?" - Probably not. @@leob_v2 I couldn't tell if you were joking or not, but if you weren't, I think it's important for it to come to your attention that about 50% of school shootings are caused by students. All your doing is arming the shooter, and giving them easier access to guns. Giving teachers or students guns is basically just asking for more shootings. And the permission forms that come with that are insane. There would be many parents who wouldn't allow their child to so much as hold a gun, for reasons such as mental health problems, or just gun-phobia. And making sure that those students don't get there hands on the guns is a whole other issue. All together, giving kids easy access to so much as a pistol when in school is a terrible idea, especially after considering the increasing depression rates among the younger population, as well as the increased tension and stress of just having that many firearms near someone and the temptation to just pick one up and shoot would all just make it a crisis and a half.

SO MANY of the arguments against gun regulations can be countered by "look at other countries", but too many US americans just do not have any idea of what's happening outside of america. Second, the whole idea that the gouvernment is out to get you. I think a lot of US americans think that they need big assault rifles in order to be able to overpower the police/military if needed. In switzerland, people get a gun after mandatory military services when they have proven to be responsible and disciplined. But a lot of US americans want the guns without the responsibility because they see the responsibilty as a threat to their freedom by the government.

TEN F-ING MILLION americans are improperly using opiates (CDC - 2021 look it up) and the government does literally NOTHING. When we get drugs and drug crime under control, you will see gun violence fall off a cliff. As for protecting children, the only rational and reasonable answer is to protect them with armed security. For me it comes down to this: at 17 years and 364 days, was the killer less disturbed? Was he less mentally ill? Was he living “without a plan”? But he couldn’t do it. But at 18 years and 1 day, he was able to put his plan to action. So don’t come at me with “no guns wouldn’t change anything”!

It probably won't change much. I don't think a civilized country should have that many armed citizens, but i think that is just a tiny piece of what makes it a problem in the US. As much as Trevor is right when he points out other countries where people don't attend church and they don't have school shootings, countries where they play violent video games and they don't have school shootings, he forgets that there also are countries where they have lots of unregulated access to guns but they still don't have school shootings like in the US. Please help reshape the the conversation on National Gun regulation. The 2nd Amendment opens with the phrase “A well-regulated Militia”, but the conservatives only focus on “the right to keep and bear arms” language of that Amendment. This means the very language of the Constitutional Amendment that confers a right to bear arms also, and most importantly, provides that right shall be “well-regulated” and today it is clearly not!
The phrase “well-regulated” was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. Establishing government oversight of the people’s arms was not only not the intent in using the phrase in the 2nd amendment, it was precisely to render the government powerless to do so that the founders wrote it.
@@timc46440 its funny who you are just skipping over the 'militia' part of that sentence in order to write your own fictional narrative.

I went to London, Hong Kong, and Melbourne in the late 90's. Sometimes I would say Canada when people asked me where I was from. This was during the height of Jerry Springer and company. If I were to travel anywhere now... I'd be too embarrassed to admit I came from the land where people, actual real people, voted for Trump. No way would I admit I lived among those deranged cult members.
In Great Britain, people asked my husband and I if we were Canadian. Constantly.
I lived in Germany for almost 7 years and whenever I met new people and they asked where i was from I was ALWAYS embarrassed to say USA. I learned quickly that WE are the only ones who think highly of us. America's bad rep is international and we deserve it!
Well, you also come from the country which eradicated polio and invented internet (most of it).
loved watching colion nior destroy every single one of trevor's arguments.
I can't help but to agree
Yep
colion the fascist had no valid arguments
For me it comes down to this: at 17 years and 364 days, was the killer less disturbed? Was he less mentally ill? Was he living “without a plan”? But he couldn’t do it.
But at 18 years and 1 day, he was able to put his plan to action. So don’t come at me with “no guns wouldn’t change anything”!
Absolutely. His mental health wasn't a concern to anyone UNTIL it culminated in a horrific massacre and outraged Americans wanted reasonable, common sense change to gun laws, understandably so...then, and only then, do some speak up that guns aren't to blame. It's a lack of mental health resources. Hmmm....sounds like only certain lives matter, at certain times, until it stops being profitable.
The real question is how does a 18 year high school drop out, without an license and living with grandma, afford 5,000 dollars worth of guns? Where did he get that money from? Very strange.
👏🏾
Law abiding citizens having no guns, would not change a thing.
@@plusorminusandtime I think the real question is why would we allow an 18 year old like that to even purchase a gun, regardless of how much money they have?
This just in from the Washington Post: “The teacher shut the door behind her, but it ‘did not lock as it should’ Travis Considine, chief of communications with the Texas Department of Public Safety…”
Yes, yes, yes, yes! He spoke so much truth! I am so done listening to opposing sides trying to make BS make sense, when it sounds ridiculous. All because they don’t want to compromise and just have better gun control in order to SAVE LIVES OF CHILDREN and OUR COMMUNITY!
Compromise would require listing to the other side. People need to stop pointing to fringe idiots and politicians thinking that they represent the majority regardless of what "side" you're on.
Gunbcontrol kills millions.
Shall NOT be infringed.
Several asian countries, several central and south american countries, several african countries where it is not very complicated to get a gun and a lot of people own one, still no school shootings.
@@TheAlja the USA left $90 Bill worth of military equipment to terrorists in Afghanistan. Sent billions to Ukraine for “military” aid🙄, and the government is literally giving their citizens weapons to help them fight “foreign” invaders........

Err, so why do you keep allowing people unfettered access to guns?
exactly, if anything that IS an argument FOR gun control, not against.
a gun ain't no pet and some poeple think it's alive has feeling. the Guns are the issue its made by a human for killing.
Yep. We should take the guns, and leave the crazy people on the streets.
Ok, how would you change the current gun legislation to prevent "Unfettered access"?
Criminals already obtain guns illegally. Making a gun "more illegal" is just writing on a page that will be ignored.
Police: “we ain’t going in. This guy is shooting at people.”
Republicans: “well then give the guns to the teachers.”
The ridiculousness!!

It's disgusting how some of these republicans are deflecting such a grave issue. It's absolutely insane what they're suggesting.
What is insane is not asking ourselves how an 18 year old with a part time low paying job can afford a $4000 rifle?
@@jackwitman8504 You think the biggest hurtle to stopping a bad guy with a gun is money? If that kid worked 10 hours a week, for $10 an hour, it would take less then a year to buy that gun.
@@Goldfiend Then the problem is that kid. if they go thru all that just to buy a gun. then they can probably again steal the guns may be from the military.
but they voters keep re-electing people like Ted Cruz or the former Florida governor now senator Rick Scott and many other NRA sponsored pro-gun morons
Though I do agree that a lot of Republicans are focusing on the wrong solutions, unfortunately, a lot of leftists also ignore some easily verifiable facts. I don't believe anyone is going about the violence issue correctly.
There are 193 countries, and we are 3rd in Gun Violence. if you take out Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, St Louis, and Los Angeles (All Cities with strict Gun Laws) We'd be 189th in Gun violence making us the 4th Safest.
Well said. Can we also address the war on teachers and schools being perpetrated by the right. Teachers as a group are doing more for society than any other. They deserve more respect, money, and funding
War on teachers? How about the war on the U.S. Border Patrol by the left? It was a border patrol agent that finally, after inexplicable delay by the cops, kicked the door in and killed the killer.
Thank you for this. ❤️
The war on teachers from the right??
Teachers are already very well paid. Increasing their wages would require a steep increase in taxes.
This is America

Please help reshape the the conversation on National Gun regulation. The 2nd Amendment opens with the phrase “A well-regulated Militia”, but the conservatives only focus on “the right to keep and bear arms” language of that Amendment. This means the very language of the Constitutional Amendment that confers a right to bear arms also, and most importantly, provides that right shall be “well-regulated” and today it is clearly not!
To me that makes it sound like Switzerland, “you want a gun, join the military.”
No they actually focus on all of it but many focus on "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
@@timc46440 its funny who you are just skipping over the 'militia' part of that sentence in order to write your own fictional narrative.
When taken as a whole it is very clear what the meaning was, not just in the amendment but also in other parts of the constitution and the letters the founding fathers wrote to each other. They were explicitly talking about a well-regulated state militia that could defend the state from outside and inside attacks and, if the need arose, stand up to the government. It is absolutely nothing to do with a gun being maintained and nothing to do with individuals owning guns
@@TheNzFox Hmm I was replying to John's comment about the definition of "Well Regulated" I didn't skip over anything, it was part of the conversation, yet here you are to inject yourself to feel validated, you have your interpretation and I have mine, nobody is changing anyone's opinion.
