This time was relatively quick seen as I didn't make too many mistakes. 4-5 hours work perhaps? My first refining attempts back in the day dragged on for days at a time 😅

Man, awesome vid. Do you process other ppls boards or computer scrap at all? I've got some stuff but not sure where to start. I've got some acids and smb and eurea and had a go myself but is has all sat for a couple of years now as I gave up at the time.
I'm currently doing some computer scrap for another fella, still a couple of weeks off completion at least though. Once the video comes out that will give you all the info you need to do your own hopefully!

Excellent video Bryan. Have you got a list or links for all of the chemicals that you have used? Perhaps you can do a video on the safe disposal of all of the chemicals that you have used? You certainly must have paid attention during Chemistry classes at school. About the only three chemicals that I am familiar with are Hydrochloric Acid and Borax and sugar.
I often have to buy HA from Bunnings for use in the School Swimming Pool to adjust the chlorine levels and for brick cleaning cement or mortar.
I and no doubt a few others will have to watch this video again numerous times to get familiar with the techniques involved. Thanks again for making this video.
BTW, do you happen to know the chemical(s) involved in dissolving quartz rock to just leave the gold behind?

Thanks heaps Mark! I dont have links sorry, but i can make a list! Hydrochloric/Muriatic Acid as the holding solution, Nitric acid as the oxidiser, Urea for DeNoxing the finished solution before precipitation if you've used too much Nitric, Sodium Metabisulphite as the precipitation additive (reacts with the Hydrochloric to produce the Sulfur Dioxide gas that makes the gold drop out of solution), Sodium Hydroxide for converting the silver chloride to silver oxide (also the most effective additive for neutralising acidic waste for disposal), standard old sugar for converting the silver oxide to elemental silver.
Stannous chloride is essentially just a heap of elemental tin dissolved (paifuly slowly) in hydrochloric acid, it is used as a reactant with the gold solution to either insure there is gold in solution or ensure you have precipitated all the gold from the solution.
To your quartz question, the most accurate way to slowly dissolve silica and most things other than gold is Hydrofluric acid. It's not something we can purchase concentrated in Australia, but you can buy Alibrite from most auto spares shops and some welding/fabricating shops. Alibrite has a small amount of Hydrofluric in it.
Wear gloves, put your specimens in a PLASTIC container and submerge it in Alibrite. Dispose of the Alibrite every 3 days and replace with new stuff. Continue the procedure until you get your desired end product.
The other (and much more agressive) option is bulk Sodium hydroxide mixed into water. Put into a good quality stainless steel pot/ container and put onto low-medium heat. It's very reactive though, so much harder to control how much gets dissolved and how quickly.

My gold buyer (Grappy$ Gold Buyers) in Vic Australia has an XRF Analyser and a set of lab quality precision scales so he can determine the exact elemental make up of anything sent to him. They're extremely expensive machines on both parts, the XRF especially. I would love an Analyser of my own one day! Better keep mining 😜
Hello how can I remove silver from my fine gold? The gold has been xrf test to 97% with 3 % silver. Is there are to smelt the silver out to 9999’s?
G'day Jenko, you can remove the silver quite easily with some chemistry. But it does require some basic equipment. Research "Gold Inquartation" to learn the process. Inquartation is the easiest way to remove your silver, it will involve adding more silver to the mix with a melt, to bring the silver content up to around 75%. Once there is approx that amount of silver in the mix, you can easily dissolve all of the silver off in some hot dilute nitric acid. Leaving just the gold sponge behind. The silver can then also be recovered again with the addition of copper to the waste solution. The copper will replace the silver in the solution slowly, leaving you again with near pure elemental silver in your beaker.
How much do you reckon it cost in chemicals?
No more than a few dollars Alec. All of them are very cheap. The E Waste refine ill be doing soon will be using quite a bit of chemicals though, will be interesting to do the math on that.
Which places you find gold at ?

Wearing gloves most of the time, always wearing foam sealed goggles. Gloves are a substantial expense unfortunately!
