Can you make a test please? 4k timeline , full res, with braw footage or any other demanding codecs, simple color adjustments AND a node with heavy noise reduction…. Can it play in real time (assuming 24 fps)?
even full spec m2 max cannot play even 4k footage with real time heavy noise reduction without rendering the clip first its just not a thing and shouldnt be expected to be one as thats ridiculous, noise reduction is always for the final render not live playing
Would be more useful to know how actually working in a timeline in davinci resolve performs compared to M1 Max, as exports are not where we spend 99% of our time...
@@MarineSwanreally smooth usually. But it all depends what camera codec you’re using. For exemple I mostly edit 8k raw 50p coming from a Nikon Z9. For editing, no problem it’s smooth. But once you start adding noise reduction or AI superscale or retime with optical flow and speed warp, you’re done, it’s unplayable without cache/node render. Same goes for sony a7s III 4k50p footage but you can go further and still have realtime playback. Other than the previous effect I spoke about you can add a lot of effect/correction without worrying. In the end you can do almost anything but there is always some realtime limitation at some point. Anyway, I almost never edit proxy, except if I have an external editor via cloud.
@@jppj4067 well let’s say not bad, I don’t know how Nikon files are, but let’s say about bmk 6k or sometime Komodo that is also 6k have you ever tried? And also about color correction for sure not heavy at this point how it’s been? Thank you so much for the help anyway
@@MarineSwan BRAW and Red files can be a bit taxing if you start really adding things to them. For this test I added the facial beauty stuff, color graded the BRAW footage and had 8k B roll. On the M3 Max it’s fine, M2 Max it’s ok but easier to edit in proxy and the M1 is similar. I’ll be pushing these in subsequent videos so you will get to see how it performs soon
Will be great to see how it performs with noise reduction, filmgrain, 2x super scale, glows, halation and Gaussian blurs on the footage. Really push it hard for each frame and see how it performs
Working on that now. For the most part it does well. Of course when each clip is rendering the fan kicks on and it’s a bit slow but once it’s all rendered 8k Red Raw clips play in full quality no issues
Thanks for the update. It’s definitely more interesting to see how workflow performs with playback when working on heavy projects in Davinci. This is substantially more important than being able to play back rendered 8k video which it certainly should. The base M2 does this already. Looking forward to the tests 👌😎
I just want to know how much the M3 Pro and Max will spank my M1 Max in final cut pro. Should I wait for the M4?🤔 I only want 14" models so it's compact for traveling.
M3 Max is more like the M2 Ultra if I was to give a comparison. With let’s say Sony 4K files it’s not really taxing on either system. It’s when you get the heavier codecs do you see it step up. So all depends on what you are using for filming
GPU heavy tasks in Resolve is what I find the most limiting. How is noise reduction performance on the M3 Max? How many frames realtime can it perform? Also, would be nice to have a simple bar graph when you mentions the numbers and times. It makes it easier to compare.
These videos about the M3 Max are educational. I am skipping the MacBook m3 and waiting for upgrading my M1 studio to a M3 studio with a few plus ups. 😀

Yeah, so of course the new one is faster, but for me one of the biggest reasons for buying Macs in the first place is the fact that they last really long. I have the M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14" from 2021, and it's still very much a great workhorse and does everything I need in the Adobe suite at a very reasonable speed. That being said, of course I'd still love to have the M3, especially because of the color :)
Yes they have a longer shelf like than a comparable PC. This is also one of the key benefits. The M3 Max in most of my tests is 3x faster than the M1 but not by a huge margin. Reality is Apple has made such a great chipset with the M1 etc for some the reason to upgrade will either be for more monitor support, faster rendering for 3D animations etc and or larger projects. For the average user the M1 and M2 are more than adequate. That being said the M3 in Space Black is stunning :)
Most interesting thing was how the rendering time of the m2 mac studio max was twice as fast as the m3 laptop. No matter how fast you are you're limited by cooling.
I'm about confused why didn't you render the same project in Final Cut as you did in DaVinci? It seems for shorter renders there's hardly any difference. A minute here or there hardly seems to matter.
Thank you dear Bobby, i was thinking to replace my m1 max but for light sony codec edit there are ZERO improvement/money. I will stay another year or two with m1 max :D
I think the average render time difference it`s arround 20min m1 max vs m3 max ( prores ) maybe for sony its a bit more or less. To spend another 4.000$ for ~20min sounds painfull ! For sure we talk about light, one layer non gfx render that normal editors use. In this case nothing to worry for m1 max .
@@zrepe yes. For larger projects and timing is of the essence and one needs to multitask while doing it, is where the more powerful M chipsets will come into play. If it’s singular projects and edits are light then gains might not be worth the investment. However if you sell the M1 Max for decent amount, the upgrade price isn’t as steep :)

Real issues with Macbooks come when you want to edit a big project; example I've been editing two seasons a TV series for a couple of years now the media take close to 100TB of storage space so it lives in a server. The Macbook just can't keep a reliable connection to the server, dongles failed I've tried all of them 10GbE and 1GbE connection breaks up ramdomly making it unbearable. So my $3K editing laptop (a bit more if you add up the expensive useless dongles) works for watching youtube and browse the internet while I edit on a desktop PC with a dedicated 10gbe card. The only solution apple has given me in two years is to replace my $20k server or go sit right next to the spinning drives through a 1m Thunderbolt cable.
