      Spacedock - overall I like the design of the Ent D Galaxy Class.
      However I think the elliptical saucer section should have been turned around so that ellipse points forward like on Voyager. More aggressive.
      and the base reinforced to handle more stress. also the neck should be shortened.
      to offer a more tactical profile.
      the Star drive section needs upgrades too, like a shorter but thicker neck to support the weight of the saucer section. an overall thicker star drive engineering section, but not as thick as the Enterprise C.
      With the saucer redesign, the warp nacelle pylons need to be shortened as well.
      Enterprise D should keep the large main shuttle bay on the saucer.
      And put two medium shuttle bays in the star drive section. rather than 1x medium and 1x small shuttle bay. Personally I would like to see the saucer get Two Conventional Torpedo launchers, and keep the star drive single one adapted for fireing quantum torpedo. The AFT saucer should have a single conventional torpedo and the AFT star drive should have Twin conventional torpedo.
      The enterprise D should keep its primary phaser configuration, but add additional secondary phaser arc to cover any blind spots, in its new configuration.

    It's worth noting that for all the talk of superior firing angles of Klingon ships that the Galaxy class's broad surface area and phaser arrays give it some of the widest firing angles of any ship displayed in canon. Which makes sense if your ship is not terribly fast or able to change direction very quickly. One doesn't need to dance with their opponent if one can simply engage them from every approach.

      The Galaxy also had more rearfacing weapons than the Sovereign,atleast pre Refit(the one that happened canonically between 2375 and 2379)..
      After all..Just look at the model of the Sovereign(the studio one,which has the same armament as the Insurrection Version)...1-2 Photon Torpedo Launchers...and maybe 2 Phasers..
      Have to give the Nemesis refit credit here...Whoever designed that certainly remembered the lack of shown rearward weapons...Probably the reason why of the 6 Torpedo launchers and 4 Phaserarrays..4 Launchers and all Phasers were mounted facing aft :D
      Granted..we can only see(maybe) 1 of the 2 additional forward Photon Launchers...

  • @ryusuei

    One thing I'd like to point out, is the Saucer of the Galaxy actually has a Warp Field Sustainer to allow it to stay at warp speeds if separated at warp, not the Drive section extending the field. It would drop the saucer's speed to Warp 2 but that would still give it an advantage to get out of a combat zone if needed, hence how the saucer got to Farpoint Station. Otherwise it would have taken far longer than it did to have gotten there at mere impulse speeds.

    • @fiestameisterse5868
      @fiestameisterse5868 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No the Saucer didn't as the warp sled or warp sustainer for it hadn't been invented in the early 2360s and they could run the impulse drives at near relivistic speed but preferred not to due to time dialation my theory is that as soon as the saucer dropped out of warp once the star drives warpfield no longer enveloped it it continued on to farpoint on maximum impulse

    • @TheDetailsMatter
      @TheDetailsMatter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Still, it seems reasonable that a Galaxy saucer could have contained a low-output, limited lifespan warp field generator capable of achieving a low warp factor (somewhere between 1.5 and 3) and sustaining it for a length of time that would permit the saucer to traverse a significant percentage of the trip to the nearest active starbase under its own power in a viable trip duration (days to weeks as opposed to months to a year or more under Emergency impulse).
      The warpsled technology was demonstrated as a shuttlecraft enhancement during the Kirk era. An uprated version for full-sized ship application should have been viable by Picard's time. That the Enterprise-D didn't have such a thing installed (or parts on board to quickly assemble and deploy it in a lifeboat situation) I would attribute to the extensiveness of civilian support facilities built into the saucer. Perhaps later variants without civilian populations would be equipped with a lifeboat warp system.

    • @CiaranMaxwell
      @CiaranMaxwell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally think it should have one if it didn't.
      All Starfleet vessels with primary and secondary hulls (saucer and engineering sections) are capable of saucer separation _once_. They use explosive charges to do this. The original Constitution could use either section as a lifeboat in this way. This was because the nacelles provided both warp field generation and warp propulsion. The refit version and later ships could only use the saucer that way because warp propulsion was merged with the impulse engines.
      The point of the saucer on the Galaxy is to be a _reusable_ lifeboat for the civilians. At warp 1, it takes 4.3 years to reach the Centauri system from Sol system, and we're _closer_ than average. At sublight, it takes longer. If they need to escape, the impulse engines ain't gonna cut it.

    In my head canon, the Galaxy class essentially replaced the Excelsiors as the workhorses of the fleet, with nearly 250 Galaxy class ships and variants constructed up until around the turn of the 25th century--an average of 10 completed hulls launched per year over a 25 year production run. They essentially become the 'face' of the Federation, representing its latest technologies in constant upgrades and refits, and acting as colony support and the primary first contact and diplomatic vehicle of the fleet. Many Galaxies are refitted as command ships for military and exploratory squadrons, and about half of them make it to their scheduled 100-year decommission date.
    Nebula class starships end up being an experiment that doesn't pan out. Billed as being the more "economical" version of the Galaxy class, the Nebula class proves to be just as expensive to build, but without the extra efficiency of the Galaxy class' warp field geometry (hull shape and nacelle position matters). The swappable "pod", while giving ships of the class extra modularity, ends up becoming a point of structural failure in combat situations and during high warp maneuvers. It's found that the internal volume of the Galaxy class is more than sufficient for housing any additional mission-specific equipment deemed necessary for the job at hand, rendering moot the "modularity" of the Nebula class. Only 30 Nebula Class ships are ever built, with the last hull being delivered in 2385.
    Sovereign class starships become the jewels in the crown of Starfleet for over 2 decades. Even the launch of the Odyssey and Vesta class ships in the beginning of the 25th century did not diminish the prestige of captaining a Sovereign class ship. With only 30 Sovereigns completed by the turn of the century, they were a rare enough sight to cause a stir wherever they went. Entire starbases would shut down as officers and visitors alike would run to the nearest viewport or exterior monitor for a glimpse of an arriving Sovereign class starship.

    [TLDR: a spare saucer just full of weapons, that can be hot swapped in case of trouble or war]. (TLDR Warning is not idle).
    Starfleet should take advantage of the modular nature of the detachable saucer section. Apparently it's a lot easier to build a saucer section than a drive section (makes sense, it's just a simple shape with components filled in to requirements) as shown by it being used in other designs, such as the Nebula, and even fitted together as space stations.
    Specialised saucer sections could be constructed, optimised for specific mission concepts. To very quickly develop a world, a saucer could be dropped off at a planet and either become a fully capable orbital facility (And that may be how the multihulled saucer stations were deployed), or deorbited (in a controlled non "Generations" manner) and become a ready built city on the ground, opening up and expanding to become the hub of a future metropolis. However, one shot hulls that just use the drive section as a tender are just the beginning.
    Instead of having to refit for 'possible' future conflicts, which takes time, have a saucer that was effectively a battlestation or weapons platform - nothing else, no crew except for maintenance access, minimal life support (or uses drive sections life support) ect. It's fitted to a Galaxy's secondary hull when needed, swapping out the 'nice' friendly peacetime hull, and relying on the battle bridge, warp core and shields (although it may have extra shielding and ablative armour) ect of the drive section.
    And while fitting it with an arsenal of phasers is tempting and useful, it's still just one ship with one set of shields and can be destroyed as such, if you can briefly withstand the fire. At close range it would be priority target number one of the enemy fleet, and it needs a lot of power for all the extra phasers (secondary reactors?). Still some more phasers would be handy for missile defense and eliminating attack ships and corvettes, lower power phaser strips wouldn't tax the systems too much as the primary damage dealer is just torpedo after torpedo continuously hitting.
    Using it as a missile truck/artillery barrage is a better use of it's abilities. The saucer could hold thousands of photon torpedoes (not quantum torpedoes, they are 'expensive' and in limited supply, and space is not an issue - quantum are more compact) and dozens of launchers for simultaneous launch of large salvos. Plus the massive computer systems of the Galaxy could handle the processing of all that targeting information.
    It could have similar firepower to DS9 (which had 5000 photon torpedoes), but in a mobile package.
    And then it just rains down massive long range barrages of photons at range, sort of like a souped up version of the homewold missile destroyer. Imagine a fleet manoeuvre where as an opening salvo, hundreds of photons rain down on the enemy fleet as they approach for engagement.
    It could also be disguised to look like a regular saucer section to sensors, with dampening fields hiding the arsenal if the extra expense was warranted in peacetime, before the Dominion war. If expecting trouble (say going to Romulan space on a piece of unconfirmed intelligence) it could be swapped into the drive section and potential adversaries would never know what they were facing.
    Or just keep them in reserve in Federation facilities without the extra build requirements of *Q-ship systems, in case of a hot war, which could break out at any moment with the Romulans, and without the structural compromises of windows and other ergonomic hull cut outs. Also since they are just a standard hull design without a warp core, navigation, sensors or other complicated components they are easy to build. Since, as mentioned above, the same saucer is used for the Nebula class saucer Starfleet obviously has mass production for it.
    Or once the Dominion war started they are built to reequip every Galaxy in the fleet. After the first is built and swaps out the standard saucer, the previous saucer section is retrofitted, and as each ship gets it's battle saucer fitted, the old saucer can be quickly stripped out and modified to replace the peace saucer on the next ship, leaving no down time for ships in the field.
    Considering that war time Galaxies had up to 65% free space, it's obvious that more systems could be fitted, if they had greater down time. And magazines for torpedoes are the simplest (and most effective use) of all that real estate, even without turning it into a unmanned remote weapons station. Or different concepts could be utilised, with a more tanky direct damage phaser version with a lot of extra reactors, a fighter carrier and general field support ship (a bit of a waste, just reequip a older ship) and so on.
    Note this concept could also be used for Excelsior class ships, as they have detachable saucer sections. Although the ability to reattach is an upgrade, a quick swap could be done at a shipyard. To standardise, Galaxies could be the longer range missile boats and the Excelsiors could be the closer range direct energy shooters with extra phasers and even disruptors - as many guns as it could carry.
    *Q-ships were used in WW2, it was a freighter turned into a gunboat with hidden rapid fire cannons behind panels ect. It was designed to sucker submarines into surfacing to use their deck guns to destroy lone unarmed ships instead of wasting expensive, limited torpedoes. As soon as the sub surfaced and before the deck gun could be manned the panels fell away and the sub was sunk before they could react. In Star Trek they could be used if you didn't happen to have three cloaked warbirds to back you up.

    • @AenVegra
      @AenVegra 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hm. Not sure how power distributions works in this case-as the Stardrive had 12.75 exajoules of energy output of itself, which is GENERALLY way beyond what a fusion Impulse Reactor can provide for similar space.
      But, the realistics aside, I feel like both the 'rely on all the power from the stardrive to launch a collosal torpedo salvo' would probably leave ample power to spare. I suppose you could build... well. I'll just say what I *personally* would build for hotswaps.
      Rescue modification-Life support and stasis equipment-which is old tech at this point and very, very cheap comparatively, no non-replicatable components-stacking much of the inside of the galaxy class saucer. Combine it with a singular Impulse Reactor and Drive, allowing rapid point-to-point beam out of people from critically damaged ships. Now... the outermost portions, cover entirely with shield generators. Enough to mitigate the bleed-through effect of Polaron Beams with the multiple shield layers... and when I mean pack the sucker-i mean PACK IT. Line the outside of the hull and every space close enough for them to be efficient-with those high capacity shield generators.
      Strategy-jump in, evacuate colonists to the deeper portions of the saucer section, which are all life-support chambers for refugees/survivors/stasis pods for critically injured, where you then offload everything when you get close to the nearby staging area. You hot-drop the saucer section and let it coast-and then maneuver-into dock with it's low-powered impulse drive and reactor. Hotswap with a fresh one while the other is still getting sortie'd, go right back to the battle lines-one with fresh shields and an empty hold for new evacuees/full shields to rescue and provide cover for other ships through shield extension.
      Long-Range dreadnaught modification-pack the saucer with short-recharge shield generators, like on science vessels. Give it backup impulse reactors for auxilliary power-if needed, those are optional. And then just pack every single avaliable surface space with phasers and phaser capacitors. Very simple.
      Strategy-This one is for longer engaugements and tactical momentum gathering. You jump into a combat zone and just FRY EVERYTHING YOU SEE with those phasers. And, you're also tougher because of all those auxilliary shield emitters. Also, you can use the impulse reactor-if you have one-for Multi-Vector-Assault, just using the phaser capacitors and the impulse reactor-but only seperate if you think you can win. Then, you yeet yourself into combat and you come at them with everything you've got, you hit them hard, you hit them fast, you steamroll over smaller forces... and then you recollect your saucer if you deployed it-and continue to the next engaugement. There's the reason for rapid recharge shields-By the time you're at the next battle, you're fully charged, both phasers and shields all over again, and ready to rinse/repeat.
      Starburst Modification-Simple, simple, simple. As many torpedo tubes, launchers, and spare torpedoes as you can POSSIBLY fit in one spot. Jump in, unload, retreat, repeat.
      Supernova modification-Make this as CHEAP AS YOU CAN. Pack it with as much antimatter as possible, or, failing that, fusionable materials. Yeet that sucker at Warp directly at your enemy, launch a probe, do a 180, and fly as fast as you can away from the miniture sun you just threw at your enemy. Say hello to my little friend-400,000 cubic meters of antimatter, assuming it's stored in a highly compressed state like anti-osmium... Enough firepower to singlehandedly crack the crust of an entire planet with ease-and we've seen what warp cores to the face can do in the series.
      This is basically that, but on steroids. Man oh man, would the Dominion or the Borg be in for a surprize when they get hit with the equavelent of several thousand warp core breaches *directly to the face*.
      I'm not saying all are ethical... I'm saying they're the kind of stuff I'd pull.

    The problem with the Galaxy Class in combat: turn rate of DEATH! Seriously, they steer like a cow. Refit for carrier duty and then functioning as a command vessel that could carry several thousand troops and massive amounts of supplies was an excellent use of them in war time.

    • @hiveinsider9122
      @hiveinsider9122 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The turn rate was offset however by their massive firing arcs, with most forward facing weapons having around the 180-degree arc range (the phasers are pretty much 360-degree). The only place I can see them having trouble is at the back and to the side (there is a single torpedo launcher facing backwards) as there isn't much there but phasers.

    • @KnightsWithoutATable
      @KnightsWithoutATable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The enemy, if more maneuverable, can concentrate fire on one side or flank two separate shield arcs at once putting massive stress on the shields, causing collapse. That curvy hull doesn't come with armor either, so if the weapons have bleed through like Dominion polaron weapons do or you start to loose shield the ship will be destroyed.

      @PaiSAMSEN 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      For that purpose, I think an entirely new design would work better. You need more than lots of guns to make a good warship.
      The way I see to prolonged the life of a Galaxy-class is to convert all those extra luxury area into reconfigurable area that could be reconfigure from luxury area like the standard Galaxy-class into militarized compartment, either for troop transport, extra shield generator, or other purpose. (obviously not to the degree of fan-design Insignia-class where they literally swap sections of saucer section for mission specific module, but the same idea.)

    The USS Galaxy or at least the idea of it always kind of captured my imagination. She's not only the prototype, and constantly used to test bed new refits and technology...but outlasted both its sister ships (including the Enterprise D) by a long long time, even surviving wars it wasn't originally meant to fight... even though it was supposed to be overshadowed. I think it's the only one of that first generation of Galaxy's that survives longer than a decade.
    I dunno, I just love the idea of the first ship, and the test ship at that, which I like to think was never meant to shine as bright as its more "finished" sister ships including an Enterprise, somehow ironically lasting decades longer and due to all its upgrades probably ending up a far more powerful vessel. Like, I like to think its a ship with a lot of quirks and problems since its the prototype and they're always testing new systems with it, but somehow it just always miraculously pulls through. I bet it has quite a story.

The Odyssey only succumbed when the attack ship rammed her star-drive section. The Enterprise D herself has survived no less than 12 direct, consecutive hits from disruptors and photon torpedoes with her shields down (ST: Generations). Galaxy Class armor, or hull plating if you prefer, is pretty, darned tough, I'd say.

The resulting beam has enough destructive power to destroy a small planet, which our -Star Blazers- intrepid crew try not to do very often.

      @@histguy101 That's conjecture. Intrepid was a more efficient, compact version of Galaxy, but it didn't make her better in every way. Voyager was refit every episode because Bermin wanted the show to be episodic. There were plotlines where Voyager was critically low on reserves, the first wasn't long after they arrived. Eventually, they were getting pretty sparse on crew, even after addition of the Maquis, Seven, the survivors of Equinox, and enhancements made by Borg.
      A Galaxy could have either attracted more enemies or friends. Surely, the Kazon would have had pause going up against one. The Enterprise-D was not just a flag ship and powerful vessel but was designed to be a luxury liner. Like combining a Destroyer and a Carnival Cruise ship. It was loaded down with a lot for entertainment. More holodecks than any other ship and more ship space for relaxing than deep space nine. I mean if you spread out the crew then it matched up to scenes where you see people alone walking the corridors. The only real place you see a lot of people is the bridge and 10-forward. Compared to older version of the Enterprise it was truly a vessel to not only work on but live on and be happy to do so. It held like 1k crew members families included but could hold over 6k people. I am not sure if families were 100% pulled from being on Federation vessels just because of the Dominion war which did not last as long as it seemed. What is considered the golden age of the Federation where vessels could be powerful but used for exploration and have families aboard as well may have ended but I do not believe it ended entirely. The real crazy version of the Enterprise was the USS NC1701-J. That thing was the size of 7 to 10 Borg Cubes. Larger than all the Enterprise ships combined that came before it. I have no clue why a ship that large would be needed by the Federation. Having a city size ship is one thing but having a ship the size of 3 cities is just beyond me. I cannot even imagine just having 1 bridge crew and 1 Captain being in control of a ship that size. I mean how many warp cores did it need to power that thing? How much of starfleet members were needed just to fill the stations and where did it dock for repairs? When the ship is larger than space stations then where the hell does it go to get repaired when it is damaged. Not even the city ships from Stargate Universe The Destiny was that large and it was truly a flying city. Think about how long it took to build such a massive ship and I am sure they only turned out 1 of these size ships. It would take decades to turn out a fleet. I can only imagine the federation building such a ship to be used to not just travel our galaxy but travel to others for exploration. That might make sense to build a ship that size. I mean I know they were fighting a Temperal war but dam do u need a ship that big? Wtf Starfleet.

      AFAIK the _Enterprise_ alone could carry everyone on Deep Space Nine and their belongings, and it’s own crew and passengers comfortably with room to spare. Like, the _Galaxies_ can carry something like fifteen thousand people in a pinch. _Wonder of the Seas,_ the largest cruise ship currently in service, has a maximum capacity of seven thousand. Makes sense looking at it, she’s about the length of a _Galaxy’s_ saucer and nowhere near as wide.

    According to the ship's Chief Designer, there is a third Torpedo Launcher in the saucer's docking cavity, facing rearward. This tube is covered and not immediately evident but can be seen in declassified deck elevations. Unfortunately, this otherwise brilliant summery, overlooked the Galaxy Class Captain's Yacht (Starfleet's version of the old Captain's Gig used by the US Navy, decades ago). This special shuttle, larger and well appointed, is docked at the bottom-center of the saucer, and is reserved for special Diplomatic transport.

  • @kyle857
    @kyle857 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    A classic design but flawed in several ways. The escape craft (sauccer section) carried the vessels most potent phaser arrays leaving the stardrive section with secondary arrays for combat. It also lacked the ability to warp away meaning that it was only useful as a lifeboat if you knew ahead of time that you were going into combat. The huge number of science labs, auxiliary vehicles and the massive resources and number of personnel it could carry really did make the Galaxy class a true mobile starbase.

    When it comes to online discussions of "what sci-fi ship would you love to have," the Galaxy-class is always my answer. I'd take the Enterprise D over any other sci-fi vessel. Plus, it has holodecks. You could live your entire life on a galaxy and have plenty of room, food, entertainment, protection, family, friends, and cool space stuff to see. You already know all of this, you're here! Honestly the only vessels in my mind that come close would be a Sovereign-class like the Enterprise E, or on the Star Wars side of the house, a MC80 Mon Calamari Star Cruiser. At least Mon Cals were converted luxury liners. They wouldn't be so spartan and bleak like most other interiors of Star Wars ships.

    One thing that always bugged me about battles between starships in stng
    They would trade shots back and forth .i can understand phasers maybe need recharge time but not photonbtorpedos. If i were cpt i would launch 10 photons at once then fire phasers then 10 more photons. I figure a ship could get off a volly like that in under 30 seconds and judging from evrrything we have seen on star trek not much could withstand that much firepower

    • @anchises666
      @anchises666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be fair: In the older Star Trek series it was very rarely the case that adversaries had to be completely annihilated. Often it was just to disable the enemy ship, to force them to stand down, to chase them away, to disctract them. Sometimes the enemy was too powerful to be even effected, no matter how much heat you would throw in their way. Or the opposite: The enemy was much weaker, so use of force had to be constrained.
      What would be possible is shown in "The best of both worlds", where the Enterprise bombards the Borg cube with phasers and torpedos for quite some time but even there it is more to create a diversion.
      But genereally it is true: The battles in Star Trek are quite inconsistent. I think the next best thing to starship-combat would be submarine-combat. But of course these can be quite boring so over time the depiction of combat became more fast paced, more close-quarter and generally more like aerial battles between fighter aircraft.

      @@anchises666 I think there were limits on just how much they could spend on special effects, and how long they had to create the special effects with real physical models for a weekly tv series. On the whole, I think they did an excellent job for a sci-fi tv series, and the movies just got better and better (until Kelvin timeline when things just got stupid crazy... but I digress).
      The best looking starship combat sequence was definitely in Nemisis! It still gave the impression of large ships moving thru space, but really pounding each other with their weapons systems the Enterprise E having to constantly rotate to give different shield sections time to regenerate... it was just the best starship battle sequence in Star Trek history (including the more recent Kelvin timeline starship battle sequences which were just fire everything and hope for the best with absolutely no strategy of any kind..... mehhh!).

    It’s worth noting that the Dominion’s huge tactical advantage, of their polaron weapons being capable of penetrating Federation shields, did not last forever. Starfleet eventually developed a countermeasure to neutralise this advantage before the war, but in a strategic ploy, they deliberately didn’t refit the fleet immediately, even while Jem’hadar warships inflicted mounting losses on Federation starships in border skirmishes. Instead, Starfleet waited until the outbreak of the war, when the Federation deliberately provoked the Dominion into a premature invasion, to allow all Federation ships to adapt their shields to defend against polaron weaponry. The resulting surprise allowed the Federation to gain some early victories, inflicting heavy casualties on the Dominion as Starfleet began a steady retreat to establish fortified lines.
    Other Dominion advantages soon turned the war around. Superior strategies, numbers, Changeling infiltrators and the fearsome Jem’hadar began to gain the upper hand on the Federation and the Klingon Empire, inflicting horrific casualties on both powers. However, Starfleet’s decision to wait to implement the upgraded shields was likely one of the main reasons why the Federation didn’t lose the war in those early months and ultimately regain the initiative in a huge counterattack aimed at Deep Space Nine.
