This "Shake, shake, shake, shake!" sequence got me laughing so hard I choked on a Mai Tai! So unexpected! I rarely comment on videos, but this time I thought it was warranted. Keep up the good work.

I really like this Anatomy of a Cocktail series. Seeing the process of both re-specing and totally restructuring a cocktail recipe is very eye-opening.

Version 2 looks amazing. The addition of those coffee notes makes the drink extremely appealing. Thank you for the comparison. Cheers!

Loving the new format of 3 drink versions. And just so you know the "shake, shake, shake" by Marius had me rolling.

This cocktail really shows that a lot of sweet is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as you balance it out some other way. Using the coffee liqueur in your reconstruction is also a great idea! I'm going to have to whip one up soon! Also, I have to say that I love the new style of video you guys have. Really using that new bar to the best!

All of a sudden I woke up and felt really into cocktails! I have always been a wine/champagne kinda gal - except of course for the 8th wonder of the world called Dry Martini (my all time fave) and the close second Bloody Mary. Thank you for your amusing and educating and so much fun videos! I wish I could invite you over for some proper Brazilian caipirinha, but if you are ever in Spain... ;) Lots of love to you!

I always thought of doing a reconstruction of the Bahama Mama using infused Rums. Since it is kind of a kitchen sink tropical resort drink I thought a cocktail made around a Pineapple Rum, Banana Rum, and Coconut Rum would be cool.

This format was great, I watch most videos y’all put out and I could immediately tell a difference.I loved the setting, lighting, and editing here. You edited it down to the essentials and were ultra efficient. Loved this episode guys. This channel got me into cocktails and it has turned into an obsession. I find myself at times enjoying the process of creating the drink and creating them for other people than I do actually drinking them myself. This is the ultimate channel for all mixology nerds in my opinion. The ONLY thing this channel lacks is the entertainment value that some of the other big channels bring to the table. I personally don’t care much about this and I’m sure everyone who is already subscribed doesn’t either but I think this channel should have just as many subscribers as some of the others. If cocktail making were a competition and I had to pick from TH-cam bartenders to be on my team, It would be a tie between Bruce and Leandro to be number 1. The history, knowledge, and specs are the best around. This episode felt like a big step in the right direction as far as attracting new subscribers. If y’all have done this format/editing style before today I apologize for being late. Can’t wait till summer gets closer and y’all start releasing tiki content. Cheers and much love from the Boot.

I don't know if I'm clear on a Reconstruction vs. a Rebuild. In many cocktail spaces, a single ingredient change means a new cocktail (think Manhattan vs. Liberal Cocktail).
In terms of main flavours at least, the Reconstructed is missing Orange and Grenadine but adding Coffee. Meanwhile, Rebuild is missing Coconut but adding Banana. I don't know if I fully appreciate the difference since, by the flavours, the Reconstructed seems more different.
If I'm being extra pedantic and annoying about it, I guess I think of added flavours as making a new drink entirely. So calling something a rebuild or reconstructed means you benefit from the name recognition of the Bahama Mama but are providing something different.
(Always digging the content though! Just being curious. I also really enjoyed the tight editing of this video. Well done)

    • @TheEducatedBarfly
      @TheEducatedBarfly  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A reconstruction would be something that respecs similar ingredients. A rebuild is using new ingredients to reshape a cocktail while keeping the original intention/idea intact (hopefully) this really does deserve more conversation tho

I made a riff of the Lost Lake, subbed out the Jamaican rum and banana liqueur for 1/2 Cargo Cult Banana Rum and 1/2 coconut rum, then added a 1/4 of simple to compensate. Also ‘accidentally’ used 1 of OP Jamaican. I also used blue curacao for laughs and got a rather nice green drink.

Minor feedback, the recipe text in the video for the Lost Lake Bahama Mama says 0.75 oz for both rums, whereas what Leandro says in the vid, and the description, both have 1 oz for the Jamaican.

I agree with your opinion on Rose's. For the longest time, I've always used that in my cocktails but, the second I made homemade Grenadine, Rose's is now a mixer I prefer to avoid at all costs.

I made the Lost Lake version for myself and a mashup mocktail version of the other two for my wife.
For the Lost Lake version, I unfortunately don't have access to Smith and Cross, but subbed Wray and Nephew and a little extra of Appleton. If you find yourself in the same spot, I'd turn down the Wray and Nephew to maybe 15-10ml and lean into the Appleton - otherwise the hogo might start to take over the drink.

@Barfly i know this video is two years old but as someone from the country in which this cocktail is from Im going to say outside of the 151 and the grenadine the drink was spot we dont put 151 in it and also we mix the grenadine with the oj and pineapple making like a fruit punch. Also the story of the dribk as it goes because the bartender who made it is very much alive and his old ass would be pissed because the drink was made after the dancer who was his friend and coworker before her death many years ago and Yes the drink is from the Bahamas its not Caribbean the Bahamas is not apart of the Caribbean and we only do regional business with the Caribbean

@@TheEducatedBarfly I’m not questioning that you don’t give credits. Don’t get me wrong. I watched every single video you produced. But if you want to transfer some of your recipes in a document it’s sometimes hard to understand or get the proper spelling of the bartenders name. I personally prefer watching the video and enjoy the video and transfer the recipe out of the description into my private cocktail collection. I would appreciate having the name of the bartender / origin & the year when the cocktail was created in the description. It would make your really good video descriptions even better. Keep up the great work and thanks for replying to my comment

What do you think about the orange juicer you used in this video? I was looking for a citrus juicer and found that style, but since it was so unconventional I was weary about getting it.
Also, when I went looking on youtube for juicer recommendations, I saw hundreds of "content farm-esque" videos promoting that juicer, which turned me off even more.

Hey, how you doing. Great video! Just watched and made the original. Been in the UK you mentioned 0.25 (1/4 OZ) grenadine but then put 22.5ml in brackets which I did. I’m assuming you used 7.5ml? I’m going to retry now using 7.5ml in the bottom and give it another try. Not studied other videos at the minute so 22.5ml might be right? I’ll report back in a shake 😂 x

    • @markthomas3081

Yep, I’d say 1/4oz, 7.5ml is sufficient, need to stir it up with a straw at the bottom to mix the grenadine but it’s the right colour combination too 👍

You said quarter oz, for overproof rum, but the recipe build says 2 Oz. Which is it?

it looked like you only slurped the syrup in the first drink, the straw was red.

Is it really a bahama mama when you substitute coffee liqueur for grenadine? If I were substituting in coffee I'd name it something else. Is the name, "Kingston Red-eye" taken?
Kingston instead of Nassau because of the origin of the rum.

Coffee liqueur instead of grenadine is how I learned it and how I do it at home for guests, but I bust out the ole Hamilton Beach for the fruits. Pour coffee liquer, coconut rum and overproof rum into a chilled glass, and pack with crushed ice. Whip OJ, pineapple and lemon juice till frothy and pour those over and then add the dark rum

I think you're right about the name, though it's not unheard of to play fast and loose with what you call the cocktail when you're openly making a riff on a classic. Love the Kingston angle, but I may just be biased

the ice is crushed, not cubed... is a critical part of this drink.

I used pebble Ice which a tad more stable than crushed
