My 4 Favorite Gin Cocktails - These Will Turn Gin Haters Into Lovers ❤️

  • I have been known to get a little arrogant about Gin. It's True I know, and hard to believe....I know...I know. Nobody would ever describe me as arrogant! But I digress. As a bartender I come up against people's reluctance to drink gin. It's funny to think that the preference of vodka as the clear spirit of choice can be traced back to the 1940's and a campaign against gin by a company (which no longer exists) called the Heublein Company (also known for the bottled drink Brass Monkey made famous in a Beastie Boys song) which was representing Smirnoff Vodka. At the time Gin was king and Vodka was an obscure spirit nobody wanted to drink as it was closely related to Russia. But they hatched a plan when inspiration struck in a Sunset Boulevard bar and marketed a drink called the Moscow Mule and set into motion the fall of gin. So my question has always been, can people still really be victims of a 1940's anti-Gin marketing campaign? And as I have made a career of trying to get people to understand gin again and realize it's potential and superiority over Vodka (for cocktails anyway) I have to say that I think so. They always come up with the same three or four reasons about why they don't like gin: 1. They drank too much cheap gin got too drunk and can't stand the sight of it (a fair reason I guess) 2. Can't stand Juniper flavor 3. I'm allergic to gin/juniper (this last one is possible but usually not the case) and 4. I hate the taste of alcohol/spirits so I like to hide the vodka flavor with juices.
So I came up with this Gin cocktail challenge to illustrate not only that most people DO NOT hate gin, but the versatility and potential of Gin as a spirit. The thing is, Gin is a spirit you have to know how to use. And it's easy, if you don't pair the flavors of the botanicals correctly, to make terrible drinks. It takes a bit of understanding but when you do understand this spirit, it opens up a whole new world to you. I have a 99% success rate with this challenge, most people can't look me in the eye and say they hate gin in cocktails and most become absolute fans of the Martini the king of all gin cocktails and one that heavily relies on it's botanical components for balance. So....WILL YOU TAKE THE GIN COCKTAIL CHALLENGE???

I universally introduce gin cocktails with a bees knees. Absolutely one of my personal favorites and I always have honey syrup on hand. Having said that, I have never had an eastside (we never have cucumbers...?) Also, my barrier to a gin martini isn't the gin, its the vermouth. I am still building my palate to tolerate vermouth (of any kind), though drinks like the scofflaw are helping there. :)

    • @jacquin8511
      @jacquin8511 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Try Italian vermouths, or craft versions. Martini and Noilly Prat are somehow the most common while being the least likeable. Drink Manhattans, Negronis and Martinez to get into red vermouths!

What a coincidence! I literally just rewatched the Eastside video for a Cocktails 101 I'm hosting because it's such great introduction to gin. In addition to the juniper flavor, I find that people are put off by anything that isn't a G&T for three reasons:
    1) Unless the drink is built in the glass it's "too much of a hassle" to make.
    2) If the drink calls for bitters or liqueurs outside of Angostura, Aperol or triple sec it's deemed complicated or expensive.
    3) Lowballs and drinks served up are often considered "too strong".
Once I became aware of this, it got a lot easier to make people excited about making and ordering cocktails.

    Great video.
About a year ago I decided to go from Gin-Hater to Gin-Fan and started playing with several brands and cocktails. The drink that really got me hooked was the Bombay Saphire Laverstoke. With some experimenting at home the Aviation became one of my favorites, as well as a Corpse Reviver #2. I like Negroni variations quite a bit as well, but can't take a full dose of Campari.
I still can't do a G&T or a Martini - the astringency and bitterness are too much for my palate. When used in cocktails that feature lemon or something viscous - like Cynar - I'm super happy.

Gin is not my favorite category of spirits, but I have been getting into it more over the past year. When I was in Japan earlier this year, I found a bottle of gin distilled with native Japanese botanicals like sakura flower, yuzu zest, Sansho pepper and others along with the usual suspects. I liked it and was very pleased I was able to find it in the states.

I actually had been making them with Aviation for a while before I found out that the Bee's Knees is one of the recommended cocktails to make on the Aviation website. Anyway, awesome video. I've tried all but the Artillery, but I can't get ahold of The No.3 London Dry in my area.
EDIT: I would also like to say that my dad had been notorious for saying that he hated gin. I made him a Bee's Knees and he had to admit that it was really good.

It’s interesting. I always made a bees knees as a Tom Collins’s but with honey instead of simple.

I was once one of those gin haters but I love me some good gin cocktails. A couple others to try would be a gin gimlet and the Cream Gin Fizz (technically tiki) on a hot summer day.

Will have to try the Eastside and Artillery.

It was about about the time of lockdown that I started looking into mixing at home and I thought all Martinis had vodka in them. I’m not proud of that. I will take your challenge now though, I’ve ordered a dry vermouth and a bottle of Beefeater :)

Interesting my favorite introductory gin drink is the water lilly. Floral, sweet, sour, delicious. But I actually went straight to gin and tonics when I first started enjoying gin, nothing better on a hot summer day.

Anders had a variation on the Eastside called the Juliet & Romeo, where you add rose water and reduce the mint, very good. BTW, I love the idea of this challenge.

LOVE a Bee's Knees! Right now I am on a kick making French 75s, playing around with flavored simple syrups such as a mint or raspberry. They have been a hit with my friends. :)

Update: Subbing with raspberry simple syrup made for an amazing drink, well worth the try! Mint simple syrup is very good too, in a whole different way. Very refreshing in both versions in my opinion.

which close up shots are talking about?

Haha ok well maybe not close ups but closer-ups? First one at 1:15. I remember most vids used to just be one single angle the whole time right? Production value is looking great either way is what I'm saying! 👍

I love gin (Plymouth being my most recent favorite)! I recently got more into mixology (thanks in part to this channel and others like How to Drink) and I find that gin is the spirit I use the most. I especially like making citrus-y drinks because I feel the citrus pairs nicely with the botanicals in the gin. Great video!

i love gin, particularly flips and DRY martinis, i personally hate too much vermouth, so the one you made here i'd probably not care for, but good video! i don't know what it is about vermouth that makes me dislike it, but i put barely enough to coat the glass, maybe a tsp.

I was in the camp that I thought I hated gin due to martini's that I was allowed to taste as a kid that were horrible. And then I started watching you and greg during the pandemic and my father in law won a bottle of Tanqueray, which he gave to me because he "hates" gin... I needed to find a way to drink it and so glad I did. It's now gin is my favorite spirit. I have tried several of your Gin drinks and love the 1904 Martini and Marguerite from 1904 as well and dirty Martini's. Now I am exploring different gins and vermouths. Not a fan of the 1:1:1 Negroni though... sooo bitter. Thanks for showing great recipes for Martini's.

The key with cocktails is to believe you will like it before you try it. Change the attitude change the outcome (at the expense of building out a home bar with every obscure spirit there is)

I don't like the botanical scent of gin because it's so overpowering to me but this looks okay. You made an interesting point about amplifying the alcohol instead of hiding it and made me realize that's EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I'll try these soon, thanks!
