One of the french army's nickname is "The Big Muted" because traditionaly things are done but not announced. For exemple, as french amator of miltiray history, I dicoverd today that a French battalion fought in the Corean War and was one of the most decorated of the war alongside the US regiment it was part of. So it could had been just communication to get the rumors down while preparing the transfer and training of pilots.

2000D are not retired. France has about 60 of them and plans on keeping of few tens until 2035.
