This one is in excellent shape. These boats are getting older. I haven't seen one in this good shape in a long time.

Great vid and well worth watching for anyone in the market for a trailer sailer. The gel coat on that boat is in fine condition for its age and it looks a great boat. Mine has a few spots that you can see sunlight through - from the factory. The gelcoat is pretty thin on these boats. If there is no damage on the outside, forget it! As to the hull thickness, as one of you said, its thick where it needs to be. Years ago on a forum I saw somebody bagging the hull because you can push on it higher up and it will flex slightly. Somebody commented "have you ever seen a jumbo jet take off and noticed how the wings can flex and move" The user name was Laura Macgregor ;-) These boats where not built in the 70s with a "more to be sure" mentality, they were designed on a computer (probably running windows 3.1 LOL). Yes the hull is built light for trailering and it is designed to flex. It is thicker where it needs to be. The gelcoat is pretty dam thin though... Unfinished glass in the lockers, well she's a Mac ;-) No millionaire's boat... Mostly looked like pretty minor cosmetic stuff to do there, although replacing the rubbing strip wouldn't be a fun job...:-( New to your channel so not sure what kind of waters you mess about in, but if you do bars, go with a decent sized motor. These boats are flat bottomed barges and wallow around like a dead seal in a following sea, especially when trying to come back through a bar or seaway. Better if you have the power to come through power boat style rather than displacement boat style... If I was to repower, I would probably go a 90, rather than the 50 I have... I was a bit worried with a crack in the motor well thinking it might be a stress fracture in the glass from having a way to big motor on the boat, but I think it more looks like somebody has jumped in there or something ?? Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you do with the boat, thanks for sharing, cheers, Paul

I used two 5’ PVC pieces on the glide rail on the trailer. I helps with visibility while Trailering and landing the boat. It also helps in not scratch the Port and Starboard side hulls. Check your Hull number with the MacGregor Data Base to know it’s not a Chinese Knock off.

I just bought a 96 that’s been very neglected and I gave 7200 for it with a 50 merc. I haven’t started it up yet it’s been cold and now I’m out of town working. I absolutely have no clue about these things and I’m gonna step the mast when I get home and see what’s all missing with the boat or what I need to replace. So please please please go as much I to detail.

I had a 2001 26X. Ever considered that MacGregor may be a Chinese Knock off? I’ve seen a couple of them already. One of the giveaways is the headway inside near the Galley is that it’s shorter than 5’7”. The other giveaway is the very thin Hull. It pops back and forth with just the slightest push of your hand. Check the Hull # to see if it’s an original 26X.

Unlike Bayliner , Macgregors have never had a hull failure. it appears there is some cosmetic issue not much for a 23 year old boat.. and the transom is as was designed.. Transom was meant to carry a 50 HP outboard.

The gelcoat is pretty shiny for an X of that age. One thing puzzles me: what makes you think it's a late model, like you say in the beginning of the video? Rest assured. The fiberglass is pretty beefy where it needs to be. I drilled a hole in the bottom for a marine toilet thru hull and found that it's almost an inch thick there.

    • @FrigateChaserFishing
      @FrigateChaserFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Late model 97. Read somewhere they changed the ballast mid 97 to fill from the back vs filling from underneath. As far as I know that is the only difference.
Your right it is thick on bottom. 🙌🏼. Our main concern is stopping the leaks in the ballast and then we are golden. Back to happy times. 😁. Thanks for watching!

@@FrigateChaserFishing My pleasure. I subscribed, curious about what's to come.
I think you're right about the ballast tank. AFAIK all MacGregor power sailors were filled from the transom, but early X models had a smaller transom valve than what I saw on your boat. At some point in '99 they moved the ballast vent to the front berth area and replaced the cabin step with a ladder. That's what I have.

  • @lisahampton1368

Hi, interesting video. We owned the 2nd X sold. #005 1995, Aileen. Hopefully still somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.
I was concerned when I saw the VIN number was removed from the back of the boat. Was this a salvaged boat? Looking at the damage that you were showing on the side, the bow & transom, there was either storm damage or not tied up well.
Please see the old promotional videos from MacGregor. If you do not remove the foam it will float when cabin is flooded.
It is an unusual boat. Not the best sailboat & not the best motor boat. It was designed to be a hybrid. Inexpensive & light so a mid size vehicle or mini van could tow. These were sold all over the world. 5000 made. This is not a Catalina or a Hunter. You will not find that quality in this boat.
I see your boat has bottom paint. I was wondering how many years it went without?
Bottom paint was usually added by people who kept them in salt water, after purchase. Our 1st did not as we traveled all over California, Nevada & Oregon.
Oh, if the trailer was ever in salt water start checking that closely. A friend bought a used one & we had to make a new one for him. The original trailers were very cheap.
Looking forward to your next videos.
