Lovely story time Jp I enjoyed that with a cup of tea after cleaning half of Fuerteventura dust out my house, I didn’t know about another Ikea that sounds fab x
Thanks Sharon. Well we have the other half of the island here in our house so perhaps we should put them together and make a new one. Just wait until we get a bad Calima to see some real dust! Sue found out yesterday just too late for the video, that they are building a bigger Ikea but it will still only be a showroom and not a shop! If you come up to this end of the island give me a shout and we'll meet up for coffee if you fancy that.
Creative Vlogs ĺ how are you settling in fuerteventura I've seen your vlogs hopefully you have settled I will hopefully do the same soon been 3 times.love the place to bits
Been Tenerife and fuertventura x 2 times each in last 8yrs for 1 week hols My last trip jan 22 to fuertventura 4wks made me realise how great the place was , hired a bicycle and headed out , birdwatching and buying some food and wine for cooking at my self catering bungalow, i think what made it so good a break was 4wks, chilled, not big crowds and weather , i just felt extra relaxed/happy 😲,
Enjoy your videos. I not only stuck to the end but watched a 2nd time. Hope the weather is treating you right there. Horrible weather now in Wales. I have to watch youtube videos to remind me what sunshine looks like.
Wow - that's dedication (or something)! The weather is great - September and October are the two best months of the year here in my opinion. I don't miss uK weather. Thanks for watching.
I do like your videos very much. I have been in Fuertventura a couple of times for vacation and started at the age of 12 when my father has lived there (Aguas Verdes on the east coast). Haven't been there for quite a while and since my dad has moved back to Germany I had no opportunity to come back. Therefore your videos bring back some memories when I was young ....
Thank you very much, that was very helpful. We have been thinking of making a move to Fuerteventura or Lanzarote fora couple of years now. Your videos are extremely helpful, frank and to the point. We were in Lanzarote in November as part of a cruise and happened to notice the Ikea store and now you mention one is opening in Fuerteventura, this is brilliant. We did manage to escape the UK once before, in 2006 and settled very nicely in Christchurch New Zealand, only to have everything destroyed and wiped out in an earthquake in 2011. Came back to the UK temporarily for 6 months in 2012 to get our heads together and it's now 2018 and we are still here!! We are a little uncertain about how Brexit will affect settling permanently in the Canaries, do you have any insights? PS, your dogs are lovely.
Well we have found out that, despite the rumours, the new Ikea will not be a full store but only a bigger showroom. Things will still have to be ordered and picked up. That is awful that you lost everything. I have always been of the opinion that Brexit won't change things as far as becoming residents in Spain goes. It is in Spain's best interest to have Brits here spending their pensions etc. I am open to offers on the dogs but I can't afford to pay too much ;-) Thanks for watching and I hope you make it.
I love all Your videos! I moving with my husband to Fuerteventura from rainy Ireland probably next year, and we will be looking for house or plot to buy,so that video was very helpful for us. Thank You. Dogs are fab, especially Jenson!
Thank you. It is odd that it seems to be the rain that sends us south more so than the cold. I hope the move goes smoothly for you. Thanks for watching.
Well I'm so pleased you did... and your channel was a big part of the inspiration and information to visit., but now that we have been and fallen in love with the somewhat bizarre place we are even more sick of the UK than we were before! Thanks a bunch! ;O)
Hi John, great video again..you talk about the things people want to ear about rather than 20min waffle and 3 mins of watchable info.. Catch you next week on your update. Hopefully the weather will be better for you guys.
I think I waffle even in a 2 minute video. I still hate to hear myself and am so critical when I watch it back. Fingers crossed the weather is about to improve. Thanks for watching.
JP, LOVE YOUR TH-cam CHANNEL, THE WIFEY, FAMILY AND ME HAVE BEEN COMING TO FUERTEVENTURA SINCE 2001, LOVE THE ISLAND, GREAT PLACE TO SETTLE SOON ME THINKS...
I just recently found your channel - thank you for your videos! We are comming to Fuerteventura / Playa Esmeralda in the South next Thursday and we certainly hope for better weather!
Well my wife's son and grandson also arrive on Thursday so we have put in a request for better weather so I think it will improve. Thanks for watching and have a great holiday.
The request for better weather seens to have made it on time - today we had a great sunny beachday here at playa esmeralda in the south of the island. Yesterday morning when we arrived it was not that good - So we decided to do a little tour with our rental car rather than just driving straight to the south to our hitel. We visited Aguy and had a nice lunch in one of the restaurants close to the beach. - Thank you for your video on Aguy and mentioning the restaurants near the beach! We plan to do the tour from your Betancuria Video as well next week. - Thanks again for your great content! Enjoy the family visit of your wife's son and grandson
Hello JP I m having a good time watching your clips coz they are quiet helpful while i m planning coming here for good as well. Great info John! It's a bold move to just pack up and go but it's worked out well for you both by all accounts. A bit underhanded by owners of second house but "what's for you won't go by you" I always say. Like from me. 🍻👍
It was nice to meet you both too Roberto. Have you been to any good ferreterias lately? I will put that on the list of future videos. Thanks for watching and hope to bump into you again one day.

Thumbs up ere' John, nice to see you in the workshop! Weather has been pants! Sounds a bit like mine except we went to Spain!!! Many thanks for sharing your move :)
Hi, so on the house purchase that you took in La Olivia, you paid 11%, was that 11% added on to whatever price you paid for the house? So say if an apartment fetches €60,000, it would be €60,000 + 11% for legal fee's etc, etc?? Thanks for your video's by the way....
I live on an island as well but not as nice as yours. It's horribly expensive in Hawaii, & mature adults are fleeing like crazy. I'll be exiting in a week but would love to move out of the ZU.S.
That's sad to hear. I spent a few days in Hawaii in 1977 on my way back from New Zealand, coincidentally with an old friend who I have just met for lunch today that I hadn't seen for 5 years.
It would have been interesting to know what you had paid for your place.. or a ball park figure of prices. How much was the apartment? Do you still own that? What was your business in the UK? Do you still have that or still work? Just curious. Thanks
Hi, enjoy your videos, we never go to the same place more than a couple of times, but went to Fuerteventura in 2012 and went on the bus to El Cotillo 3 times in that week, and have since spent 9 weeks over the next 5 years renting various flats in the village, Oct is our favourite time, we love snorkelling in the lagoons and the sea is lovely and warm then. We are having a change now, got a little dog and a motorhome and haven't booked for this year and it feels strange! But undoubtedly will return someday and rely on your videos for our Cotillo fix, but please never do a video of eating a chocolate pastrie from the French bakery! or a Liquorice ice cream from The kiosk! That would be cruel!!!
For you in order to buy the apartment at first. Did you have to get a Spanish bankaccount first or ? Could you maybe make a video about that because I think some people would be really curious about the kind of extras you need to even move to the canary islands.
We needed an NIE number each and a bank account at that time. We also needed to go to a Notary to give Power of Attorney to our solicitor to handle the property purchase in our absense. Although I can see that it might be useful, I try and avoid making videos with that sort of information in as the rules can change. If that happens the video is then out of date so it can mislead people. Plus, I absolutely hate the long-winded Spanish bureaucracy which bores me to death.
That's a great story John! Literally, probably the best move you ever made. But I think you miss Artleknock and the surrounding areas. After all ...why else would you have taken a photo of Rushden tip! :-D
Me and my wife love the canaries, we are young and toying with the idea of eventually moving out here to start our life, is there any dos and donts you could advise
Well the usual I guess in some ways - do your homework; if you can then come for an extended stay perhaps in the winter; start learning Spanish now; don't expect to earn much money - living here and working means more about lifestyle than money.
What's a daily life for you has now become my dream, I have searched thoroughly for a place that belonged to the EU (Im from Portugal) yet it had a tropical weather and feel (Balearics, Malta, Greece, etc), I spent hours on google 360 doing roads to get the feel of places and ammenities - Lanzarote in Canary almost got me, but Fuerteventura was the one the checked the box that was missing - Less darker and bit more white beach sand + some wooded areas - I guess it will take Me 10 years but when Im 59 we will probably be neighbours and since I plan ti do Tourist Nature and/or Photography Tours for a living, who knows if you participate in one, I subbed and will eagerly watch all videos - can you do one about safety and tourist traps ? I believe not.much crime is going on but clearly some spots will be hoter than others, cheers
Great video! Do you ever regret moving to fuerteventura? Me & my girl have been visiting fuerteventura many times, and have that dream of buying a place there in the future. Once again, good video. Thumbs up from me.
Is it better here or say in French Guiana? Only thing I worry about is how windy it's If I am not going to be wind blown lol I heard it comes pretty ruff some times
Thanks for the video JP. It must have been a wrench to leave such a lovely house behind. Could you tell me what the general feel of the island is in relation to the other Canary Islands and mainland Spain, does the calima affect Fuerteventura, are there any lager louts and what is your internet speed? I have been told Jandia is one of the best places to live; is this true?
Thanks for watching Steve. I can't really compare it to the other islands as I have only spent a day in both Gran Canaria and Tenerife, and a couple of weeks in Lanzarote (which I don't particularly like). It is pretty laid back here is all I can say really. Yes we do get the full effect of Calimas here, but they aren't that much of a problem really. You get a few lager louts in Caleta and Corralejo I guess but it is not like Benidorm. We have stone-aged internet although we have been promised fibre optics soon (not holding my breath, even though I have paid for installation). Personally I would say Jandia is very much tourist territory - lovely beaches but dominated by big all-inclusive hotels, mostly frequented by German holidaymakers. But each to their own. What one person loves another hates. The only way is to come here for a holiday and look around.
So where did you book your long stay overwinter stays. I livid in Germany and used to book Lanzarote for 3 month with TUI. No problem in Germany.. Uk 28 Days is max..
We bought an apartment in El Cotillo on our honeymoon so just needed flights (usually Ryanair). Brits can stay for up to 90 days in any 180 now, not 28.
Nice info vid JP, i wanna buy also a property on Fuerteventura, and live there. I am from Holland, i didnt think the taxes were that high 11% above hte asking price, here in Holland that would be 3% of the asking price!! But anyways, i love your vids, and enjoying watch it. I do have some contact with GoldAcre Estates(i think a good party)...if u recommend something else i be glad take your advise, thnx in advantage!! Also i need fast internet for some work assignments.....hopely they got it, cuz in previous u said the internet sucks!! hahahaha
The taxes are ridiculously high which is one of the reasons why the housing market is not that buoyant as once you buy you are stuck with what you have. I now have fast internet Martijn. Thanks for watching.
@@JPinFuerteventura I'vv got another question, is it possible to bring your own car to Fuerteventura?...Or are you better of bying a car on the Island it's self?
@@JMJ.1965 Since yours will be left-hand drive it will be much easier to register here (UK right-hand drive not so easy). Cars are more expensive here than in most of Europe so it will probably be worth it for you. You would also be able to fill it with your things to bring down too rather than shipping them.
Hi JP good to hear everything worked out for you. I have been thinking of moving to fuertaventura for health reasons but don't have much money. I have been looking at 1 bedroom bungalows in caleta De fuste , could I just leave the UK and live in it or would I have to register ? Also what would I have to pay for living there like taxes and stuff, just me and the wife no cars or furniture, just some luggage haha. Hoping to retire early.
Well you have to get an NIE to buy a property. If you live here for more than 183 days a year that makes you tax resident and you would need to register for residencia. Brexit might mean you need a visa. Since neither of you will have state pension you will not get free healthcare so you would need to pay for private healthcare, but of course they are likely to exclude any of your current health problems. Living here is generally cheaper than living in the UK though.
@@JPinFuerteventura Thanks for the reply, 183 days sounds good enough for me , I will right that down, I have arthritis and asthma and I want to enjoy life before I get too old and knackered because insurance will go sky high. Take care JP and enjoy the good life, will look forward to your next videos.
Hi John, I guess your lead-up to the move story is probably not too dissimilar from that of many other ex-pats but out of curiosity, did you ever consider any of the other canary islands for your holiday home before plumping for Fuerteventura or was it always the only island for you ?
I have only been to Tenerife and Gran Canaria on a cruise (so a day in each) but we have had a couple of holidays in Lanzarote. I think Fuerteventura always had more appeal though because the beaches are head and shoulders better than Lanzarote's. There was no contest by the time we actually thought of buying. Thanks for watching.
How long did it take for your name to be on property in town hall ? We bought in april 2017, in april 2018 i went to town hall to set up direct debit from bank and fiund out still in sellers name. I am over for 4 days feb 4th to 8th to hopefully short it out. Plus a trip to garden center
Very informative John thank you can I ask how much the storage charges were in Porta Del Rosario So glad you sold your property so quickly in the UK ours is taking forever to sell and the properties in Spain are on the rise :(
To be honest Valerie I can't remember. At that time Woodside didn't have their own storage so they sub- contracted. I suggest you contact Annette so she can give you the current price. www.woodsidecargosl.com/indexone.html Thanks for watching.
Are there any retirement villages in Fuerteventura Independant living with Medical if necessary? I have a critical illness are there good hospitals nearby?
There are no facilities like that at all here. No retirement homes of any kind as far as I am aware. The hospital in Puerto del Rosario, the capital, is good though.
You can, if the seller is prepared to ship here. Buying new from Amazon means you don't get charged VAT, although you may pay import duty if over 120€. You cannot use Amazon Prime though.
Hi JP. I have a question. Do you happen to know by any chance if it's possible for a certified English as a foreign Language teacher to find a job on the Canary Islands? I was thinking one of the bigger cities. I just got my certification and it's a dream of mine to teach English in Spain. Thank you.
Obviously it isn't something I have done but I believe it is certainly a possibility although I think it is something that many people consider doing. Stuart's Spain Speaks channel has a video in it as I believe that is how he earns a living doing it in Madrid. th-cam.com/video/nsZ1ER159Ec/w-d-xo.html
Are there locals friendly to expats? Any discrimination at all? I've been to this island 2 times - 2014 and 2018 May-June. Would be probably a nice place to retire one day and live in a peaceful corner of the Earth like this :)
Well all I can say is that we have had no problems, and we don't live in an expats stronghold either. Obviously learning to speak Spanish helps. I hope you find a nice peaceful corner. Thanks for watching.
Hi Mark, Well depending on where you live here, and what you enjoy, it should be possible to make friends. One of things that held me back a bit is that I don't drink so no longer want to spend hours in bars and I hate football, which seems to be a major topic of conversation in many bars. Come out for a holiday for a few weeks on your own and see how you get on. Thanks for watching.
Never known it to be cold for so long over here in the UK Next winter should be on the beach in Fuerteventura At the moment I have the 11 Mile Beach in mind Club Hotel Oliva Beach Resort The massive hotel on the beach
I have never stayed there (or any hotel in Fuerteventura) but it is certainly a great spot for the beach. Not so great if you want to go into town at night though.
Im a Greek island person at the moment but I need somewhere for the winter Just lived down the road from you well think its 10 miles down the road in Bedfordshire.Building every where now think its 300,000 more houses in Bedforshire and Cambridgeshire in the next 15 years.Eastern Milton Keynes is coming as well crossing the M1 I do prefer Cambridge
It is a shame that the Greek islands aren't so warm in the winter as they are beautiful. I have had a number of great holidays there. The building just never seems to stop unfortunately. Bedford and Milton Keynes could become one big conurbation at this rate. I don't miss living in the area one bit but then I only moved there due to work rather than it being a choice.
Hi JP! Thanks for answering. You must be a little amused about getting a Mail though our Band account hehe. I've to open another one as a privat person. I'm an Artist. Musician Writer Tattooist etc. I'd experienced quiet a lot unpleasant things recently as my father passed eight weeks ago. Got some serious health issues as well like a proper burn out from working 24/7. In the past I'd spend about 10 times on the Canaries on my own as my folks used to spend plenty years in El Paso/La Palma. I always said "if the time is right I wanna come here for good", now the time is right I assume. Well, the Plan is to open up a little tattoo studio as I finally find my actual profession. Many of the locals here told me it would be awesome as the only other studio is in Corralejo but none in Costa Calma. So the next six month are going to be busy as hell but in October/November I'd like to come back here anyway. JP, do you have an advice or tip for me how and through whom I should look for the right place? It could be a single square room or even a cheap house (to rent) coz I've to start bit by bit but I definitly wanna come here for good. Wish you and your wife luck and health. I'll catch you around. Greets from Markus "Alex" Alexander
Thanks for the update JP enjoyed the virtual walk around cotillo. Nice use of music to.
Regards Simon.
I am glad you liked it Simon. Thanks for watching.

A man with well organised tools, you're okay in my book :)

Wow JP you've done a wonderful job on your home 😊
Sir what is the approx. price per square foot of a home similar to yours?
This is a very rough guess - $100-120. Thanks for watching Walter.
Grazie JP da Roma, ciao Andrea.🌅
Grazie per aver guardato Andrea

Hi, so on the house purchase that you took in La Olivia, you paid 11%, was that 11% added on to whatever price you paid for the house? So say if an apartment fetches €60,000, it would be €60,000 + 11% for legal fee's etc, etc?? Thanks for your video's by the way....
Yes, that is on top of the cost of the property purchase.
Good stuff as per jp :)
Thank you and cheers for watching.
Fuerteventura lovely place, Go every year.
It certainly is. Thanks for watching.
It would have been interesting to know what you had paid for your place.. or a ball park figure of prices.
How much was the apartment? Do you still own that?
What was your business in the UK? Do you still have that or still work?
Just curious. Thanks
great story and very interesting didn't realise you have pay 11% tax on the property price
Thanks Andrew. The 11% does include Notary fees, etc. Thanks for watching.
You like the liquorice ice cream too! I thought it was just me. Dog's can be a tie but they are worth it. Thanks for watching.
You are awesome!
I have been called all sorts of things but never that - thanks
@@JPinFuerteventura Thx !
That's a great story John! Literally, probably the best move you ever made. But I think you miss Artleknock and the surrounding areas. After all ...why else would you have taken a photo of Rushden tip! :-D
Thanks Kevin. I think you are right. I wish I could say I had taken one but I pinched it off the tip's website ;-)
Haha! When I go that way next, I'll send you some footage from my dash cam :)
I am sure you can make it Carlos. Thanks for watching.
Great video!
Do you ever regret moving to fuerteventura?
Me & my girl have been visiting fuerteventura many times, and have that dream of buying a place there in the future.
Once again, good video. Thumbs up from me.
I can't say I regret it at all. Staying in the UK and retiring would have been very depressing. Thanks for watching.
Is it better here or say in French Guiana?
Only thing I worry about is how windy it's
If I am not going to be wind blown lol
I heard it comes pretty ruff some times
I can't comment as I have never been to French Guiana. It is not always windy.
I want to move here when I turn 18. I go here every year and I love it. Do you need alot of money to move here??
Well not that much I guess, assuming you intend to work. Without working then you would certainly need a bit behind you.
I livid in Germany and used to book
Lanzarote for 3 month with TUI.
No problem in Germany.. Uk 28
Days is max..
We bought an apartment in El Cotillo on our honeymoon so just needed flights (usually Ryanair). Brits can stay for up to 90 days in any 180 now, not 28.
@@JPinFuerteventura brits can stay as long as they want, as long as they spending the dinero🤔all a big game.
@@JPinFuerteventura Thnx for replying JP.....and maybe we will meet in the near future, greetz Martijn.
Livin’ the dream...
Pretty much, yes. Will you be too?
I think they went into our names quite quickly as we have always paid our taxes on both properties by DD. Good luck with sorting it out.
cool video
Thanks Carmen
Very informative John thank you can I ask how much the storage charges were in Porta Del Rosario So glad you sold your property so quickly in the UK ours is taking forever to sell and the properties in Spain are on the rise :(
To be honest Valerie I can't remember. At that time Woodside didn't have their own storage so they sub- contracted. I suggest you contact Annette so she can give you the current price. www.woodsidecargosl.com/indexone.html Thanks for watching.
and I meant to add - I hope yours sells soon.
Ahhh, I remember the 321'ers doing about a million dump-runs with their car in the days leading up to their great departure!
Where does it all come from?
Can you use amazon and eBay to order things in fuertaventura
JP in Fuerteventura
I'll check out the link you recommended. Thank you for the reply.
JP in Fuerteventura .
Decent Shed JP
Thanks. I am really pleased with it. Good quality and very good value even considering the shipping cost. Thanks for watching.
Ah, yes, I remember you told me you had flown from Bristol Airport.
The one and only time
JP...THINKING OF GETTING OUT THE RAT RACE ..ON MY OWN THOUGH, IS IT EASY TO MAKE FRIENDS ETC THANKS MARK FROM LUTON 47
Nice video. By the way, it's migrants, not ex pats.
Thanks Rick. That depends on which view you take.
Maybe first try to pronounce the name of the place correctly...
What?
Que valientes dejar. .... Inglaterra ? Siendo jubilados . 😮
And what have you 😂
You've lost me there
Never known it to be cold for so long over here in the UK Next winter should be on the beach in Fuerteventura At the moment I have the 11 Mile Beach in mind Club Hotel Oliva Beach Resort The massive hotel on the beach
I seem to remember I got a good deal. We also arrived, shattered, on Valentines day evening and managed to have a nice meal in the restaurant.
