    Good video. I've just retired here with my wife and everything you say is true and more. Workmen next door found a badly injured goat which we managed to get to a rescue centre and ended up with a rescue dog into the bargain (Toby, and we love him). Relaxed and civilised is the mode of life in the village where we live. We decided to bring over two cars and a motorcycle as well but then discovered Spanish Canarian bureaucracy. However, it's very hard to find anything here that's as bad as what is normal in the UK.
    A few comments on the list
    1. Climate. This year was a very hot August, but even neighbours said it was unusual. End of October saw a big storm and now everything is a lot greener. But even when the weather seems harsh, it will still be sunny later on.
    2. Cost of living. You forgot to mention the lack of heating bills.
    3. Landscape. I love it just before sunset when the light is magical. Also, it's the only place I know where you can see so far. And then there's the fauna, right now we have the Hoopoes at their maximum and you are not too far from a goat anywhere.
    4. Lifestyle. Throw away 75% of your UK wardrobe and get used to showing off your legs. You'll also eat healthier here.
    5. People. Probably the best bit. There are numerous festivals from mid September to mid October and we went to as many as we could. Very good atmosphere and at one we went to the local teanagers served food to their elders. At the kite festival recently the small children could draw pictures on paper kites and fly them.
    I'm even starting to get used to Corralejo. Did you know it has an italian quarter with some excellent Gelaterias?

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a coincidence, our second rescue dog was called Toby (now Jenson). Bureaucracy is definitely on the, albeit, small, list of negatives. Lack of heating bills would be a good one. Fuerte is quickly becoming one big Italian quarter with the Italian government grants to make them leave Italy ;-) Thanks for watching and your comprehensive comment!

    Fantastic informative video, I fell in Love with this island back in December I'm really considering living there now however I have a cat & he must come with me. I found the island to be beautiful a real scenic place the roads so clear to and the locals go out there way to help, as for the extortionate council back here sounds like the cost of living is very welcome, I'm learning kitesurfing so I think the island would be good for me, and oh the weather 🌞 yes please lol x👍

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Creative Films : It is certainly cheaper to live here than the UK, and other northern European countries, for the most part. My heating bills are certainly low - I think the gas bottle we have in our one gas fire is about half full now after two winters so we have used just over 12€ worth. Many people bring their animals with them and there are some specialist firms which will bring them by road and ferry, if flying isn't an option. I don't kitesurf but my niece's partner is a champion kitesurfer and he enjoyed his recent trip out here so I guess it must be good. Thanks for watching and your comments.

    I visited Fuerteventura for the first time in my life last month (January 2017) and I really liked it. Lovely weather, nice beaches and not too developed like other islands. My friend moved out there 7 years ago and I must say I'm tempted to relocate and find a job there. I speak fluent Spanish so I think I'll have an advantage.

    I'm desperate to give up my middle management job to move to the canary islands. Just for the climate. We've had two decent summers back to back in the uk. 2018 didnt rain for 5 weeks and 2019 we have temperatures up to 32°C which was great but as you know we dont have air con as standard in the uk. The winters I suffer so bad from November to march. Aches, pains difficult to get up at 4:30am when it's dark. Commenting 2 hours each way in the rain. We had a week in gran canaria in November, The day I flew out of east Midlands, my town flooded. The sun was amazing on my bones and back. My mood was instantly better for the entire week. My son and I are looking in to leaving wet and gret Nottingham behind
    Also as you mention the cost of living. My son works 40 hours a weeks and barely covers his rent and council tax and public transport. My main reason to move out there would be the climate, My sons would be cost of living, The beaches are just a welcome bonus.
    Your videos are very informative.

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah middle management. I left middle management 30 years ago to start my own business. The endless meetings and the final straw that broke the camel's back was a meeting to discuss the agenda for another meeting! It is a lovely climate here and SAD is unknown as even at the end of January we still have almost 10 hours of daylight. I don't even want to imagine getting up at 4:30 whether it is dark or not. We don't have air con either as we simply don't have enough really hot days (or nights) to justify it. Just a great steady climate all year. As I say, we only have two seasons really - summer and spring. I hope you manage to get here Kerry.

    Thank You. Best holiday of my life was here. I met a beautiful Spanish lady two days into my two week holiday in 2004 and will never forget the time we spent together.
    (On that note, you forgot to mention the naturist beaches, incidentally)
    ...I may retire to this fantastic place.

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was lucky then and no wonder you won't forget it. Well although we came here on holiday because of the beaches, somehow we never seem to get to them any more. We keep saying we must start going again but that is as far as it goes. Well, retiring here is certainly not a bad idea that's for sure. Thanks for watching.

    We moved from Sweden to Tenerife 20 years ago, learned the language and became Spanish citizens. The language opens all doors. Next month we will visit Fuerteventura again with our local Spanish senior club. We have visited all the Canarian Islands. Great to live in Paradise!

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well done Herman. I must admit that whilst my Spanish is getting better I do struggle to speak it. My brain is wired for solving problems not remembering things such as words. My wife is the other way, she remembers words immediately but is not good at things like maths. As much as I love Fuerteventura it is not Paradise. Ask the thousands of abused dogs if they agree.

      @JPinFuerteventura  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was still running my UK business when we moved here. I was able to run it via the internet. I'm still not actually retired though - it is more like forced unemployment until I get my UK state pension later this year. We live in the north of the island. Thanks for watching Philip.

  • @clark47jc

    Fell in love with this place after a holiday there. I would love to live there, but I wouldn't have a clue as to finding employment at my age (52)

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly isn't easy, particularly without speaking Spanish. Technically I am forced unemployed (thanks USA), rather than being retired, but have just had to accept that, particularly at 62, I have zero chance of getting a job. I have to get by on what I have. Fortunately it is generally a cheap place to live. Thanks for watching and I hope you manage to live here one day.

    Hello John, followed your vlogs for several years now. I know the Island quite well, in fact back there next Saturday. You say in your vlogs you don't drink alcohol. I think you said you gave up because you didn't care much for the Spanish/Canarian brew. Just wondering if you would drink British style Beers if they were more widely available on the Island?

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you say, I don't drink. I haven't for 6 years and stopped for 9 years back in the 90s too. This is partly because the beer is awful but also that I don't really like alcohol that much (and after 10 years of policing, what it does to some people). I also hate hangovers, not that I drank enough to get one very often but when I did the next day was a complete waste of life. If you could get good British draught real ale then I might have the odd one now and again. Thanks for watching Ian.

    Oh my god, thank you! I am seriously considering buying a small piece of land inlands and install a ' tiny house'/prefab house on it; it does not require any plumbing and it runs on solar panels. It would be a great escape. How is the permit milieu in Fuerteventura? Is it difficult do get things done in terms of building/camping? I have been searching online and notice land is not too expensive, though quite remote. I just wonder how easy my plan would be.

    Hola JP. I found your site today:) I was interested to hear your remarks about people with arthritis suffering less. I'm looking to relocate to a sunny destination in Europe and am just back from a trip to Mallorca. It was cold and wet and my hands did not appreciate the experience. I have heard that the barometric pressure in the Canaries is pretty constant, which apparently is much kinder to your joints. I think a trip to the Canaries needs to be planned :)

    Hi JP, you've been very good to reply to my queries lately & I really appreciate that. Just one fundamental question for you, which we really agonised over during our last holiday in July 2018 ... whilst in the UK we get fed up of the rain and cold ..... but when living in Fuerte, do you ever want to escape from the wind? We felt it was really relentless during our holiday this year, getting sand blasted every time we tried to settle on the beach, to the point that we started to question whether this really was the place we really wanted to live. Hopefully the 'average' weather is better?
    Cheers, Alistair

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well Fuerte is a pretty windy island for much of the year. Generally less so in late summer. I don't notice it that much now, particularly as we hardly ever go to the beach any more, which is odd as the beaches were a big part of coming here. It's a bit like the only time my relatives in Brighton ever went to the seafront was when we stayed with them when I was a kid. The wind does keep it cooler in summer.

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  ปีที่แล้ว

      The weather is naturally a little less predicable in the winter, so you may have a few rainy days, however you would be very unlucky if the majority of days were not beach days. There is little difference between the norh and the south. One thing for sure, in that 2 week period, on the worst day here it will still be better than the best day in the UK.

    Hi We have been coming for long trips for a few years to get away from the UK winter, and echo everything you say about Fuerteventura. I noticed on your video you visited the rim of a volcano', looking into the caldera from a safe platform.
    I would love to see this, and wondered if you would reveal where this is? Thank you Keith

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Keith. Thanks for watching. The volcano is outside Lajares. You turn off the Lajares roundabout by the football ground towards Majanicho. You park on the right literally at the end of Lajares where you will see some footpath signs. You follow the path along the front of the hills (Camino Calderos on the map) all the way to the end and around the corner (left) and you will see the footpath climbing up the side of the volcano to the viewing platform. Great views from there and make sure you take an apple or something to feed the very friendly ground squirrels up there. Map here - www.google.es/maps/@28.6951748,-13.9275687,1989m/data=!3m1!1e3

    I wanted to ask if you have any concerns re your right to stay as a resident since the disaster of Brexit? Thanks

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a number of friends living here who have medical problems (arthritis and asthma) who never need to use their medication, unlike when they were in the UK. Personally no, and I don't see it as a disaster either. There is no way that Spain would not allow the Brits to stay as they are too good for the Spanish economy. Likewise any EU citizens settled in the UK will remain. It is just the leftie media that likes to fuel the belief that things will be different. Brits were moving to Spain long before we even joined the EU. As it is your dream do you have any plans to make it your reality? I hope so. Thanks for watching and for your comment Wendy.

    • @wendylowe7757
      @wendylowe7757 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for you immediate reply. I pray you are right about the rights of Brits to live abroad. (And vice versa though European nurses have been informed their NHS contracts will not be renewed!) I guess I'm extra worried as when I get sick I need expensive hospital care. Since Brexit I feared that no matter what financial challenges, I'd never get a visa type permit of residence, as I am an expensive poorly person. But hey...that's the £200K or so I've cost the NHS in the past 20yrs. I am well in hot dry climates, so maybe no more relapses? Thanks for your vids here. I'm counting the days till 5th April when we'll be in Corralejo again. My plans are in their infancy but 'failing to plan is planning to fail' love Wendy

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The NHS telling EU nurses they aren't going to renew their contracts is rather different to the Home Office telling them they cannot stay or work in the UK. As I keep reminding everyone who blames Brexit for everything - Brixit hasn't happened yet and won't for at least 2 years. I am sure you will have a great time - April is just around the corner.

      Well as you may expect, there aren't that many job opportunities. Those that are tend to be in the tourist sector so aren't very well paid. If you speak Spanish then your options will be greater. They may be more opportunities in the more populated islands (Tenerife and Gran Canaria) but then there are probably more people looking for jobs there too. Good luck with the move whatever you decide.

      You are in a similar position to us when we moved here. If you can afford to live in the UK then you certainly can here as the cost of living is lower. Since leaving the UK it is not as easy to live here as you no longer have the automatic right to do so but it just means you have a few extra hoops to jump though. For example, in order to swap your UK license for a Spanish one you will need to take a test now. I suggest you search on Facebook for "Citizens Advice Bureau Spain" and join as you will find lots of useful and up to date information on there. Good luck.

    We would love to live there , but Brexit has put a stop to that . There is no way I can afford private health care especially with some pre existing conds.

      Brexit won't stop people being able to move to Spain. It may put a few additional hurdles in the way. Before Brexit you needed to have private health insurance if under UK state pension age and, as the arrangement between the UK and Spain regarding healthcare is nothing to do with the EU, that will probably continue once the UK leaves. Don't right it off as an idea.

      Yes I understand about that I am of pensionable age but my wife is a lot younger . Now as things stand at the moment her health care as mine would be free as we are legally married , unfortunately it’s my belief that after Brexit Jan 31st 2020 it will all change and you will have to be self insured , possibly linked to annual visa renewals as other non EU countries are beginning to do now . I have a friend who has lived in LaJares for about 12 years now with his own property and I know he is concerned with this now . Its a lovely set of islands and we have visited al of them many many times , may your good health and enjoyment continue for many many years

    what about the level of rent

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since long term rentals have become increasingly difficult to find, due to the demand, inevitably, it seems that rents have been increasing.

    Hi, just watched some of your vlogs. Do you have a facebook page and email address? We are from the uk but live in Australia and been here 6 years. We love the canaries and look to retire there to stretch out our pensions (we are 48 and 50 with a 5 year old) and Australia is very expensive on a pension. Thanks. Sue and Gary

    Hello, my name is Patrick. Ive seen some videos about the island, great job! Ive been in caleta de fuste for a vacation 6 years ago. Such a wonderfull place, still have warm memories. Ive been thinking about moving permantly from holland to fuerteventura. Pretty done in Europe, want to live my next 30 years in freedom and want to help rebuild economy. Do you pherhaps got any recommendations or advise about
    houses/jobs, chances in overall? Personally its a huge step, tho willing to take the risk. Still weighting a lot. Looking forward to hear from you.

      Well I wouldn't exactly call living in any part of Spain freedom. Bureaucracy is an art form here. Sadly most jobs here are in the tourism sector so wages are low and at the moment are almost non-existent.

    Ditto for Lanzarote! I Bought a 6 bedroom, 7 bathroom house, beautiful 4.2k sq m garden and pool in a rural position with indescribably stunning views, for the price of a 3 bed semi in UK, council tax for the year pays for one month in the UK, bins are separate, 51 Euros for the year for two collections a week. What is more you can actually see the council workers regularly attending to the roads and cleaning and clearing the roadsides keeping up appearances, what do they do with all that money in the UK? Build up their pensions I think.

      That sounds like a stunning property. With regard to council tax, it is hard to believe that we get so much for so little here and yet so little for so much in the UK. Thanks for watching.

    Hello JP, just dicovered your show, glad you are enjoying life" in the sun, I have been coming to Fuerte to windsurf for many years, now 57 yrs old living there has been on my mind fo a while now, having tried to work out how much per year renting would be, roughly, instead of buying a house, which I already own, and can sell for capital, Do you know if you can live in a modern RV camper van. Not like gypsy, I expect to pay all going utilities ground rents ,taxes, I know you can rent them. as an alternative to a house, any info would be appreciated

      Hi Nick. Thanks for watching. You can rent one-bedroom apartments for as little as 300€ a month upwards on long-term rent, depending on where you want to be. I am not sure how you would go about siting an RV. There are no residential parks that I am aware of. It seems people who rent campervans just park up by the beaches most of the times, which I don't think you can legally do. Drop me an email if you want details of rental websites.

    Great videos. A place I would seriously consider relocating too, I think we would have a lot to offer by doing so. The U.K. is in rapid decay and it’s becoming unimaginably difficult to have a decent and dignified life.

      Obviously it has its bad bits but overall it is a pretty relaxed life here.
