Thank yall for locking in family make sure you check out my other beastie boy reaction Shocking Reaction to Beastie Boys' Intergalactic Music Video-th-cam.com/video/8Y_uf-BRty8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MbpqbJaMGw64laKh
All of this was came from the diversity in that area back then. CBGB's was right in the middle of things. Punk, rock, and rap was all around and people started putting it all together. Blondie and the Beastie Boys were big at kicking the door down for the underground rap that was NY, back then. The song 'Rapture' from Blondie raps about it with "Fab Five Freddy told me everybody's fly DJ spinnin' I said, "My my" Flash is fast, Flash is cool." When the song was released they were to do a SNL appearance. She refused to do so unless the show brought in The Funky 4 +1 along with them. Was around the same time the Sugar Hill Gang started receiving radio air play. All those people were in and around CBGB's back then where the music was. People all talk about diversity, that was the music scene in New York in those days. Beastie was actually a punk band and did a rap as a joke for a prank called, Cooky Puss. and it hit big all around town. All of them in that area hit the Music industry hard together. Was really something to see when it all happened. That is what this country needs more of, if you ask me. Music can do that if more people would just listen. There's never been race in music, It's the opposite.
The Beastie's debut album Licensed to Ill was released in 1986 and was the first rap #1 album. This album is from 1998. It won 2 Grammys, Best Alternative Rock Album and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Intergalactic". This is not the album version as this was recorded live. Apparently, they recorded this album in this crappy little room.
Ad Rock was directly responsible for Def Jam Records. He discovered LL Cool J and introduced him to Rick Ruben…. Rick produced LL’s album and enlisted Russel Simmons to help promote it. That’s how Def Jam was born.
Beastie Boys was picked up and blew up big time under Rick ruband they went through a few style s**** when they started at least when they were first being put out on the radio they had this weird Rock rap thing going on But over time as they got more and more fans and more and more experience they moved solidly into hip-hop. This video was like I think early 2000s maybe late 90s if I remember right so they'd already been doing their thing for like 15 years at least
The second group signed to def jam to be exact. Right after Run DMC. Ad Rock also was the one that randomly picked up LL Cool J’s demo off Rick Ruben’s dorm room floor and played it.
You just witnessed the brilliance of DJ Mix Master Mike (the fourth Beastie Boy) This track was done with NO BEAT MACHINE, other than their voices everything you're hearing came from scratching and cutting that ONE RECORD. Mix Master Mike won so many DJ competitions in his career that they asked him to stop competing so others could have a chance at winning. Their earlier stuff broke the mold of the day, for that try "Fight For Your Right", you may even recognize it. I like their 80's stuff but I think their best work came in the 90's My favorites are "So Watcha Want" and "Shake Your Rump"
Actually Bestie Boys was originally a punk band in 84-86 and in 87-88 switched up from punk rock to rap making beats in DEFJAM WITH CHUCK D. FLAVOR FLAV FROM PUBLIC ENEMY! Just take a look at the name and I've been in the music/rap genre game from '74 so I grew up with this classic tracks that you're jamming but I grew up on the West Coast but listened to East Coast rap because I liked the harder beats like BOOM BAP RAP BEATS! You want a 90'S rap from RUSSIA WITH THE CLASSIC BEATS THEN CHECK OUT: - Miyagi & Andy Panda feat. TumaniYO - Brooklyn! But if you want a player rapper L.L. COOL J - RUN D.M.C.- KOOL KEITH - PUBLIC ENEMY - BUT MY FAVORITE LAID BACK MELLOW BEATS IS FROM BIG DADDY KANG - R.A.W & SMOOTH OPERATOR & AIN'T NO HALF STEPPIN'. Checkout some hardcore West Coast rap right around NWA second album but this artist is political rap but o.g. gangster PARIS - THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT! CHECK THESE ARTIST OUT AND YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED! YO CHECK OUT BIGL L. RIP BIG. L!
Beastie Boys are the ones who gave LL Cool J his first beat that made him famous. On top of that they helped Public enemy get their start because they opened up for the Beastie Boys
Sabotage, Whatcha Want, Brass Monkey, Sure Shot, Body Movin’, Shake Your Rump, Hey Ladies, Hold It Now Hit It, Root Down, Pass the Mic. bangers, every single one!
Paul's Boutique is one of the greatest albums ever made. It uses more samples than any record ever, it was made before the industry caught on to cashing in on that side of things. This is late Beastie Boys, they started as a punk band and got into the rap scene in the early 80's. One of the pioneers of the genre.
I grew up in Jersey… was in high school when Beastie boys came out in 1986. I was a long hair metal head. But the Beastie Boys crossed all lines of music taste. Even the Metal heads would jam to “No Sleep Till BROOKLYN!” I still listen to them today!
BEASTIE BOYS WERE A 1980s GROUP. They used to be a punk rock band at the beginning of that decade. They eventually started rapping, and the rest is history. Their first song was 'Cookie Puss'.
This song was from their 5th album, Hello Nasty (released in 1998). If you wanna hear their early shit, I predict you'll be blown away by Paul Revere and also by The New Style, both from their first album (released in 1986). As for their *best* song... yo, that's hard to pick just one because Beastie Boys are the GOAT: "They are the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991."
They had multiple styles. This song was a throwback, but they put it out later in their career. Also, the point of being in the basement is that real hip-hop was still underground. In a way it still is, because the popular stuff today isn't hip-hop. It may not be my place to say anything, but the culture that gets talked about so much has suffered over the past 30 years. There are only a few artists saying anything real or having fun with it in a way that resonates. Hip hop was dope back before everybody had to curse all the time and only talk about drugs, guns, money, and hoes. It used to be about storytelling, turning parties out, and boasting on lyrical skills. It was just fun. They used to make music you could hoop to. Now, it's mostly junk, with a few excellent exceptions.
the concept of going down to the basement is because at the beginning of hip hip many groups trained in the basement of their homes, and was just a dj and mcs .. nothing more
This was like 3 or 4 albums into their career. And mix master Mike was blowing up the scene. He’s not just a DJ, he’s a DJ god. A legendary being that makes records do things that shouldn’t be possible.
"Fight For Your Right To Party" was their breakout hit from the 80s (and their tourmates Public Enemy riffed on that with their own song "Party For Your Right To Fight"). 1 - 2 - Punch would be doing that and their "Fight For Your Right (Revisited) - FULL Length" video where they make fun of their younger selves. (Also be sure to do the FULL length one as people get mad in the comments when people only react to the cut version.)
The reason for the long intro was they wanted to show it was done in one take. The legendary Mix Master Mike. This dude pretty much invented modern turntablism. If you ever want the history on scratching there is a great documentary (free on TH-cam) called “Scratch.” It’s worth the watch. Hip Hop history is a must know. As well, Beastie Boys were some of the first to do it. Another great film was “Krush Groove.” That was one of the first Hip Hop movies. Beastie Boys, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Bel Biv Devoe, Sheila E., Kurtis Blow, Bobby Brown, Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin. Amazing cast. Krush Groove and Wild Style are essential movies in Hip Hip history.
Since they did this video live. And its in 1999. This is what I experienced when I seen them. When they were part of the 1st Def Jam Tour in 87/88. It was Run DMC, Whodini, Erik B & Rakim, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Roger & Zap. That was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I almost fell off the balcony getting LL's autograph. #birdgang 💚🐐🍀
Rhyming and stealing is one of my favorites and it’s from their first album, the official video was from one of their concerts. You can see how wild the be. I also love “no sleep til Brooklyn” and “the new style” But I I love “Che check it out” for how crazy the rap and video is. “Car thief” and “staring down a barrel” are great songs
My first BBoys concert in KC in 1989. Saw them 4 more times in KC, 2x in Chicago, 1x in LA and my last show was Red Rocks in 2007.🎉 They sound just as amazing in 3000 seat venue vs a huge concert venue.
The Beastie Boys blew up with Licensed To Ill in 1986. I remember a high school dance where they played the album repeatedly. They are an 80’s/90’s/00’s group.
I was 14 when License to Ill came out in 1986 and it blew our tiny little minds with Paul Revere and Fight for your Right to Party. Two completely different genres of music made by the same group on the same album and both huge hits. Their love of punk, rock and rap got bigger and bigger with Paul's Boutique and my favorite album of theirs is Check Your Head where they were playing their own instruments on most of the songs. They inspired so many people over the span of their careers until the tragic passing of MCA. Great song to react to guys.
This song came out in 1998, so 12 years after their first hip hop album came out. They were punk before they turned hip hop in 1986. Their first and most famous album came out in 1986. License to Ill. They were touring with RUN DMC in the 80's. They got LL Cool J signed in the 80's. They're absolutely an 80's group. But also a 90's group. Hip Hop icons.
The first Beastie boys song is called Cookie Puss .. maybe the original meme .. they where a NY Hard Core band who started doing hip hop , with Rick Rubin at NYU . There career is long and this song is fairly late into it. My favorite thing they did is Paul Boutique .. the whole album is crazy .. it should be listened to start to finish for the full experience .. Props to the Dust brothers for the collab.
@jasonbyassee7541 nah, in Philly, we got to hear Cooky Puss on vinyl in 1983 on Lady B's Sunday rap show on Power 99FM radio back in the day. My brother and I would tape her show; he still has some tapes he managed to keep. Check out Questlove talking about when he heard them on Lady B's show. We were really lucky in Philly and the area to hear kick @$$ music in those days. You take care 🙂
These dudes are Legends! They’re live show was Bananas, I’m from Baltimore too, they rocked the Civic Center which is now the Arena, and anyone who was there for any of their shows will attest to that
1) Mixmaster Mike was voted top DJ in the world 4x and was banned from even competing anymore 2) this whole performance was done live during MTV awards in one take
The Beastie Boys were not just rappers, they were also killer musicians but you hardly see it in videos. They preformed live on the David Letterman show and played all the instruments themselves. Drums, bass, lead, the whole works.
This older style rap is FAR better than what he have to listen to (or not) today. No cussing, no drugs, no guns, no b*tches etc...FAR better and cleaner for OUR kids to listen to!
This isn't late ninety's this is a 80s style group, So you have to not view them as a new group but a classic group. Most young people only have Limited thing to refer to Or compare to so they see it as less than.
So, fun fact: One of the people who helped push them into their careers was Donna Lee Parsons (a transgender woman in the punk rock scene who got the first two Beastie Boys EPs released as well as their first gig when they were first starting.) When she was dying of cancer, the boys got together and paid her 'royalties' for helping them, enough to get her gender-affirming surgery so she could be on the outside who she was on the inside. The reason it was 'royalties' was because she never would have accepted them doing it out of charity, so they basically said "you helped us get our first album out. You earned this money just as much as we did." She died a year later from her cancer, but their generosity and love for her was felt.
"Sabotage" or "So Whatcha Want" are probably their most popular. Do one of those next. But, there are a LOT more after that. Y'all just scratchin the surface.
Mix Master Mike was part of the team that won the DMC championships in 92 & 93 As for best Beasties Songs, my favourite beat of theirs is "So What'cha Want?" from the Check Your Head album, its a serious jump around type beat.
They dropped license to I'll in 1986. I seen them in concert in Jacksonville Florida 1987, they opened up for Run DMC. They were definitely an 80's band.
Beastie Boys is definitely an 80’s group. They were still relevant through the 90’s but their first two albums “License to Ill” dropped in 86 and “Paul’s Boutique” in 89.
7:20 "He was the one that made the song about the hood" ... OH HIM!! YEAH that narrowed it down 🤣. Real talk, hate when that happens to me, but you're good with rolling with it. Nice reaction.
Thank yall for locking in family make sure you check out my other beastie boy reaction
Shocking Reaction to Beastie Boys' Intergalactic Music Video-th-cam.com/video/8Y_uf-BRty8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MbpqbJaMGw64laKh
Young man, you should do research before reacting. BEASTIE BOYS 1981-2012. 90s group???! Don't listen to comments, everybody can comment. Cheers.
All of this was came from the diversity in that area back then. CBGB's was right in the middle of things. Punk, rock, and rap was all around and people started putting it all together. I do in fact have a comment. I want to see you guys reaction for real to "Beastie Boys Live in Glasgow." The entire show.
@dunsonhouse just saw this video great reaction but the beastie boys came out in 1986 with license to Ill
They're absolutely an 80s group.
And 90s.
And beyond.
Timeless.
❤ YES!
For real. They were on tour with RUN-DMC and LL Cool J back in the 80s.
They also gave LL Cool J his big break. They are absolute Legends of Hip-Hop
Hip hop rayalty right there !
Facts!!!
Beasties were one of the foundation groups that helped build Def Jam.
Ad Rock was directly responsible for Def Jam Records. He discovered LL Cool J and introduced him to Rick Ruben…. Rick produced LL’s album and enlisted Russel Simmons to help promote it. That’s how Def Jam was born.
They were with Def Jam back when its mailing address was technically Rick Rubin's college dorm room.
Damn skippy
Beastie Boys was picked up and blew up big time under Rick ruband they went through a few style s**** when they started at least when they were first being put out on the radio they had this weird Rock rap thing going on But over time as they got more and more fans and more and more experience they moved solidly into hip-hop.

That was first cassette tape my brother and I had when we were kids. Im getting old.

@@highd12 I unfortunately never got to see them live :(
the opened for Madonna's Like a Virgin tour and THAT was a crazy idea
This was their performance piped in live for tye MTV music awards, 1 take, 1 record, no beat machine.
It’s incredible. They were a great live show. Saw them 3 times and they were always on point and gave it 💯
@@domenicgalata1470 Picture it. 1997, last minute tix in the pit, they come back for the first encore with "Sabotage." I'm lucky to be alive!

Appreciate the comment the family
Yes!! I'll be 61!
Gen Xer here as well. Turning 53 this year and still listening to the Beastie Boys.
Ya’ll make me feel young! 47, and Pauls Boutique is still one of my favourite albums of ALL TIME!
Hell ya brother License to Ill one of the most badass albums of all time!
They were definitely an 80's group. Whoever said that was not old enough to remember the 80's.
This is the "studio" they started in. Straight from Brooklyn. The party doesn't start until the dj shows up.

Paul's Boutique caused a sampling litigation crisis lol
Forgive me if someone already pointed this out…
You notice in the video that NOTHING happens unless the DJ is there….hell of a compliment to the DJ.
I grew up in Jersey… was in high school when Beastie boys came out in 1986. I was a long hair metal head. But the Beastie Boys crossed all lines of music taste. Even the Metal heads would jam to “No Sleep Till BROOKLYN!” I still listen to them today!

80's group, 90's group. 2000's group. . dont matter they drop sick beats like malaria
This should be remembered as an absolute classic of hip hop. There isn’t another song like this. Truly amazing
the concept of going down to the basement is because at the beginning of hip hip many groups trained in the basement of their homes, and was just a dj and mcs .. nothing more
and sometimes a drum computer
The DJ is the musician playing the turntable and emcees like instruments. When he leaves, they are just unused instruments again.
This was like 3 or 4 albums into their career. And mix master Mike was blowing up the scene. He’s not just a DJ, he’s a DJ god. A legendary being that makes records do things that shouldn’t be possible.
No License to Ill came out in 1986 - That makes them an 80's groups... I remember buying the CASSETTE as soon as I heard Fight for your Right..

Somehow, that seems to get overlooked by the so-called knowledgeable commenters.
They helped build Def Jam straight 80's and beyond
Fight for Your Right (1986) was my first Beastie song, was a HUGE hit. It's Rock Rap.
The number one selling hip-hop group of all time.
A lot of Missy Elliots beats were inspired by beastie boys. These guys were one of the true pioneers who lead the way for Artists today.

I grew up on The Beasties and Run-DMC back in the '80s. Good times!
They started in the 80s. They were the first rappers to hit number one. They were among the originals. Your fans are yun'gins.
They’re started in the 80’s
The Beastie Boys were not just rappers, they were also killer musicians but you hardly see it in videos. They preformed live on the David Letterman show and played all the instruments themselves. Drums, bass, lead, the whole works.
This older style rap is FAR better than what he have to listen to (or not) today. No cussing, no drugs, no guns, no b*tches etc...FAR better and cleaner for OUR kids to listen to!
This isn't late ninety's this is a 80s style group,
So you have to not view them as a new group but
a classic group. Most young people only have
Limited thing to refer to
Or compare to so they see it as less than.
Their first Hip Hop Single was Cooky Puss... even Africa Bambaata rated it.
It was played in NYC Clubs.
With respect, they're Hip-Hop OGs from the 1980s, and then became mainstream in the 90s.
"Sabotage" or "So Whatcha Want" are probably their most popular. Do one of those next. But, there are a LOT more after that. Y'all just scratchin the surface.
Watcha Want for sure 🎉🎉🎉
Beastie Boys never make the best hip hop lists. They are without a doubt one of greatest hip hop groups of all time if not the greatest.
Top 3 Periodt. 🇺🇸🎤❤️🔥

Mix Master Mike was part of the team that won the DMC championships in 92 & 93
As for best Beasties Songs, my favourite beat of theirs is "So What'cha Want?" from the Check Your Head album, its a serious jump around type beat.
The Malibu comment made me laugh out loud! F*ing hilarious. Thanks gents.
Because Malibu came out 20 years later?
Active in the 80's through the 2000's. RIP MCA
The first record they put out was released in Nov. of 1986 "License to ill"
They dropped license to I'll in 1986. I seen them in concert in Jacksonville Florida 1987, they opened up for Run DMC. They were definitely an 80's band.
Appreciate the comment

Beastie Boys is definitely an 80’s group. They were still relevant through the 90’s but their first two albums “License to Ill” dropped in 86 and “Paul’s Boutique” in 89.
This was live for MTV in the late '90s but was a throwback to their '80s rap style.
Appreciate the comment
I had their License to Ill album when I was in highschool in 1987. They def started in the 80's.
They made history by having the 1st rap album to hit #1 on the Billboard Chart
Rhyming and stealing it’s one of my favorite songs in their official video is at one of their shows. You really can’t see how wild these guys were.
Best rap group of all time. Also there voices are unique and RIP MCA who had one of the illest voice in hip hop history.

Five Burroughs is when they peaked. Lyrics, music, everything. Everything was on point for that album. Check it out, To the 5 Burroughs!!
They actually started as Punk band before they went into Hip-Hop. I always find it faschinating tbh!
They're an 80's group I was totally into them when I was a teenager in the late 80's. But they had a strong career in the 90's too. 🤗
Hiphop in its purest form.. beastie boys the real deal
Best album "Licensed to Ill".. "She's Crafty".. "No Sleep till Brooklin".. and "Intergallactic Planetary".. Epic late 80's/90's band..
Beastie Boys came out with LICENSE TO ILL November 15, 1986....
7:20 "He was the one that made the song about the hood" ... OH HIM!! YEAH that narrowed it down 🤣. Real talk, hate when that happens to me, but you're good with rolling with it. Nice reaction.
Beastie's are always having so much fun.
They’re 80s and 90s, all good music
1986 is when they hit the scenes...80's group!!!
When hip hop was hip hop. The 80s. The 90s. This shit was TRUE ENTERTAINMENT.
The Beastie Boys first album License To Ill dropped in 1986
Mix Master Mike is on another level. Just great work.
DJ Mix Master won so many DJ competitions they asked him to stop entering so other people could win. Then he became a judge
This was towards the end of their career, they started in the 80s with Licensed to Ill and even before that as a punk band.
THIS VIDEO AND JOINT IS RIDICULOUSLY RELEVANT TODAY FOLKS.
