If your propeller gets caught up in some weeds you can actually reverse the hell out of it to clear it off. Works most the time, except when it doesn't!
That is brilliant. Here in Ireland we dont really use kayaks to their full potential and i think its mainly due to having to paddle and using the rod at the same time. This is the ideal answer to the problem. Stay safe in it and tight lines.
Westin you're inspiring me to make TH-cam videos even tho I'm starting out with just a GoPro hero +!! Thank you for inspiring others and spreading positivity!
My wife jus got me this for my Bday.... I'm kinda on the fense about this boat, not a big fan of having to get water inside the boat every launch. Wish they woulda made a temp plug for it until you get out there. I haven't actually picked it up yet jus running thru some videos first. TY for this vid 😁
My buddy has the Oldtown Topwater 106 it’s an awesome yak. Being able to hold positions is crucial to catching fish; you’re able to be in the strike zone is a game changer without drifting off. Hands free is the way to go!!
I have the pdl 106 and love it. I fish the James River here in the Richmond Va area and I am able to the tide coming in or going out. The other day fishing in a small creek I peddled in reverse as the tide was coming in and didn’t have to peddle up the creek first. More fishing and less peddling. PS I car top it as well and it’s light enough and easy to see on the crossbars.
Heck yaw! I’m glad you likes the new yak! Quick tip on deploying the pedal drive that I was told when I bought mine is to lift up and towards the front versus up and towards you! I’m looking forward to seeing your next old town kayak.
Man That's a nice Kayak. I would like to upgrade my kayak to a pedal Drive. I love how you can lock the steering in and the rotor. I love the compartment in the middle to For Keys and drys stuff. I really love the drive with that instant reverse. I just don't know if it will work for me I have very very wide feet and i don't think my feet will stay on the pedal as wide they are. But I really would love to get this kayak.
so I don't know if anyone has said this yet but do not lock the PDL drive to the kayak I always leave mine unlocked so if it hits something it just kicks the PDL drive up into the kayak instead of breaking stuff
Makes sense! But I’ve also had mine already push itself out of the hole when I didn’t have it locked and was peddling. Would have caused damage to the prop if it was in the horizontal position when it came up
How “easy” is it to paddle? Trying to decide between this or a kayak with trolling motor. I am 49yo and have had my hip replaced. I bike no problem, but want to make sure the pedaling isn’t super tough.
The motor driven kayak really makes life ez. It may just be because we have the 10 and a half foot peddle drive but it also seems more uncomfortable for the lower back long term since you’re always pushing against the backrest while peddling. The 120 sized kayak which we have the motor on has a higher seat position and you can just kick back. But the peddle doesn’t take too much effort to answer the question
I just got the 106 PDL. Tried it the other day. I’m 61 with lower back issues. The pedal drive worked like a charm. So easy. No back pain after 4 hours on the lake. I give it 5 stars!
I can’t speak for this exact kayak, but I’m around 240 and own the topwater 120 non pdl and never once felt unstable. I believe the 106 pdl is roughly 3 inches wider than mine too. Hope that helped a little
I would just say grab the 120, since this one does feel compact and they put a lot into a 10’6” yak. The stability I highly doubt would be an issue even at twice my size given its wide base
@@WestinSmith I currently rock the Big Fish 120 but have been looking for an upgrade to PDL. so the PDL 120 would make sense. Thanks! As always, great content.
Seems they may have improved it although I do prefer a higher seat position which is adjustable on the autopilot 120 so maybe the PDL 120 has that option as well. The 106 is great but seemingly small for my taste
I’m curious to see if you end up putting fish finders on the yaks. I’m new to it and just got the topwater 120 non pdl (I wanted the pdl, but it just wasn’t in the cards) and have been throwing around the idea of getting one, but nothing crazy
It feels fantastic and that was in high winds, but comparing them is slightly unfair because the SS127 has another 2 feet on it. This PDL 106 has great stability though, never worried about it flipping etc.
@@WestinSmith awesome..i have the bonafide ss127 and have been on the ss107 ive been debating on going to a pedal drive. Ive been so comfortable with the 127 that im unsure if i want to make the switch. Thanx for the feedback. love your videos i only wish I lived close to water like you do..im at least 2hrs away from any water...good ol west tx..lol
Westin, check out Greg Blanchard, he’s got a very similar kayak an is a tournament bass fisherman who has a channel an films all his stuff, might get some pointers on camera setup an what not. Nice yak my brotha, straight fish slayin machine!!
Westin: "Deploy, commandeer, calling Devon's kayak a ship! Westin gets into a new kayak and he's all nodical terms! I like how you did a review of the new kayak on the water while using it. Instead of just doing a review on land all boring.
Yeah these yaks with pedals just make a big difference I bet I’ve yet to own a kayak of any short but whenever I do buy one I’m gonna go straight for one with pedals and a little bit bigger of a yak if possible I’m LOJO sized man but yeah this yak in particular is pretty legit seems big and spacious solid and smooth yeah man good shit Westin you duh man
Westin Smith I do fish the California delta a lot and it gets crazy out there sometimes but I’d have to see the size of the 120 but I’m sure the next size up is priced a little more I’m sure
I feel like a grand is the most I could spend on a yak anymore I’d just look for something like LOJO has honestly cause I’m a big man and id love to get a pedal drive then buy a trolling motor also to hook up to it that would be the shit
Yeah I hear ya. It’s an investment but the pedals do set it off and LoJo’s SS127 is about $400 cheaper than this one. We have those SS127’s as well and they’re dope
Westin Smith oh definitely and are you talking about his SS minnow Johnson? Is 400 dollars less or LOJOs kayak he just gave Andrew? Either way they’re all dope but how much is your old town running exactly I never saw the price? Also what about your bone yak? Can you install a pedal drive to that?
Someone mentioned that, I’ll have to highlight it in one of the next videos! However when it had a lot of water in it, taking the one out made a big difference
Westin Smith yeah crazy stuff. I got a predator 13 form old town but it’s just a paddle. Oh so you don’t get confused my Instagram is Fishing with the Joneses. This is just my personal account. I’m the same person lol. Not that you cared or anything but just in case you know lol.
Nice looking Yak ! That peddle powered prop is cool !! I believe if I ever get on it would have to be a WIDE sided yak !! I'm not that small of a fellow, and kinda TOP HEAVY get my drift 🤣🤣🤣😉 ! Personal note DEV'S legs look sexier than yours NO OFFENSE !! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 COOL VIDEO !! 😁😁✌👍👍😉😉😉🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hahahaha yeah the base is about as weird as the BONAFIDE so I’m sure it can accommodate! I bet the extra space of the 120 is pretty killer, this one has its advantages of the smaller boats like lighter weight and more nimble. Always trade offs !
Check out the NEW KAYAK HERE: bit.ly/sportsman_westin_smith
What accessories should we get for the new KAYAK?????
A white claw cooler for sure and maybe a fish finder like the small $99 garmin
Haha 🤘🏼😂
The anchor wizard is pretty sweet
If you have one try doing a deep see finder thanks for the content thanks so much.😁😁

Thanks Nigel! These open up a lot of options !
Best part too is catching a fish near the weeds and being able to reverse as you pull in the fish and not get stuck
Yeah double whammy!

Just ordered this same Kayak. Looks like you had a lot of fun. Coming from an MDLR watcher. Will be following you too. Old Town has come a long way.

wonder if they could come up with some type of shield or cutting device to help keep the prop clean of grass.

I just received 120 PDL and can't wait to get it in the water I also have the pelican 130 HD2
Because of your channel I went out and bought a 106 pdl. Can’t wait to try it out! It was one of the last ones here in pretty much all of CA.
How are you liking it? Do you go on lakes with a lot of boat activity
I learn so much from watching your videos
Thanks Brenden!
You two make me want a yak! That old town is awesomeness!
They are a ton of fun
What happens if you pedal while paddling? Is it like turbo speed or do legs alone hit a max speed the kayak is designed for?
How roomy is it being it’s 10,6 and has a pedal drive. Also how stable is it
What do you prefer, the bonafide or a pdl? I have a bonafidess107 was thinking of selling
Do you think this would be good for going upriver with a pretty steady current?
Is there a plug or anything for the pdl slot for if you don't wanna use the pdl drive?
Heck yaw! I’m glad you likes the new yak! Quick tip on deploying the pedal drive that I was told when I bought mine is to lift up and towards the front versus up and towards you! I’m looking forward to seeing your next old town kayak.
Ok sick! I’ll have to give that a shot
where do you get that kayak box with the rod holders?
What’s your GoPro mic setup, what’s products do you use?
Another kayak coming...Next level...It has to be the one with the trolling motor.
🤔
What app are you using on your Apple Watch that shows the wind speed, etc?
So just looked at the kayak and can you attach your box to the scupper plugs with zip ties or string
I’ll have to try that
Those are self-draining scupper plugs. Just got my 2020 Sportsman PDL 106, awesome yaks.
Ok no wonder their design is a little different
Me too! Couldn’t agree more!

Rudder Deploy!!💥😆😂
Awesome video man!
Thank ya !
Bro that ride is absolutly sick i want the 120 powerd by minkota
Yeah that one would be dope as well!!
how do you turn
I’ve been looking into getting a pdl kayak it might just be this one after I saw this. Keep up the good work man!
Thanks Blaine! This thing is insane, you’ll love it. Either this or the more spacious 120, both are dope
The 120 really doesn’t give you more space in the cockpit, it’s just longer in the bow and stern
so I don't know if anyone has said this yet but do not lock the PDL drive to the kayak I always leave mine unlocked so if it hits something it just kicks the PDL drive up into the kayak instead of breaking stuff
Makes sense! But I’ve also had mine already push itself out of the hole when I didn’t have it locked and was peddling. Would have caused damage to the prop if it was in the horizontal position when it came up
Hell yeah another banger! The new yak is sick homie ‼️💯
Thanks!
Westin Smith if you ever find yourself in Oregon holla at me bruh! Got everything y’all will need. Stay solid!

Did you consider getting the motor version?
Yes
Westin Smith any reasons you didn’t get it?
Hows the seat in the 2020 model? I watched a 2019 review and the biggest problem was the bar by the lower back was digging into them.
Seems they may have improved it although I do prefer a higher seat position which is adjustable on the autopilot 120 so maybe the PDL 120 has that option as well. The 106 is great but seemingly small for my taste

You’ll know soon enough! Don’t want to spoil the surprise

sup man one thing no googan squad is not doing is salmon fishing so you need to get the ball rollen
