Really good content. Interested to have more of this kind of vids on sea and land engagements. Nice picks here. Gonna trow a few doubloons later. Cheers!
Hey Skipper. +1 for Land battle's. I was just reading about the history of Castillo San Carlos, Maracaibo after watching your video. The attack in 1666 by François L'Olonnais, the devil incarnate and "scouge of the Spanish". Now that's was one sick puppy, and we wonder why pirates get a bad name.🏴☠️
I hope there’s another one of these someday! Hopefully we get to see the Ganj I Sawai capture as that battle was pretty climactic with the pirates taking on a much more heavily armed opponent, partially winning by luck, and both sides taking heavy casualties in the fighting, with the impact of the raid on pirate history arguably being one of the most pivotal moments ever in sea rover history. The Battle of Cape Fear River and capture of Stede Bonnet is also a good one, not as massive but it is interesting that an overall lackluster pirate like Bonnet very nearly defeated a hardened veteran and seasoned pirate hunter like William Rhett, even inflicting more casualties on the hunters. An underrated battle which connects to this video is the Lynnhaven Bay 1699 action between John James and HMS Essex Prize, James seized a merchant right under the navy ship’s nose then battered her with gunfire until she retreated, a rare win for a pirate ship over a British navy vessel, James was also an eccentric figure overall, allegedly according to Grey he was Henry Every’s quartermaster and flew a green flag with gold scimitars taken from the Gunsway (could be true, description is very close to the ‘Grand Admiral of Surat flag’ found in some period map charts), and he was described as exceedingly ugly by a prisoner, to whom he bragged about being William Kidd (despite the crew still calling him James, the prisoner still believed him somehow), and also repeatedly stating he would rather trade with Englishmen than rob them, while robbing an Englishman (curiously, almost the same exact message conveyed by Every). Edit: forgot to mention the connection to the video, James’s success in the region against a coastal guard vessel inspired Guittard to attempt a repeat of his victory, directly leading to his defeat and death.
capture of the gunsway is probably another honorable mention purely because there isn't a lot of detailed information about the engagement itself, whereas in these picks most of the precise tactical decisions were documented
I would also note here too as a possible future suggestion or an honorable mention of a battle in 1707 when a lone pirate brigantine, possibly under Captain John Halsey, engaged four Indiamen near Bab-el-Mandeb in the Red Sea and boarded two very rich ships, causing several losses in the first battle despite company men's resistance. I discussed this in the GnG Discord. The battle is described in Charles Grey's old book Pirates of the Eastern Seas (Grey offers long source quotes of official EIC correspondence in pages 275-279.). There also hast to be some interesting earlier buccaneer sea engagements... I would think especially if we take Frenchmen who went into the Pacific into account, a quick search shows how Raveneau de Lussan told of a battle between several buccaneers including Captain Grogniet and a Spanish flotilla, but pirates got a bloody nose here in the end. We can also look at the privateers like Rogers we also have a battle against Spanish Manila Galleon. Returning to Red Sea men we of course have Culliford against Indiaman Dorril too, even if the battle was never resolved properly making it less impactful. I agree about Bonnet's last fight and think it does greatly differ from the pirate captures in dishonorable mentions here in the video. Then there is also Captain Martel's capture which has some similarities with the Bannister story even if the pirates failed in the end. Also Some French filibustiers attacked English traders a lot in the 1680s so there are those stories too. Anyway just thinking aloud but there should be enough of these for a future follow up vids...
Well, mate, if you're going to do a set on great sea battles I think it only appropriate for you to do a set of land battles as well. Ya know, to keep the balance and all. Thanks, take care.
0:52 It rather annoys me when people today think that pirates were these bloodthirsty murderers who killed everyone They saw sunk every ship they came across and stole everything they wanted And they absolutely refuse to accept the fact that most pirates tried to go after people they could force to surrender without a fight because they didn't have infinite replacements to keep filling their crew with
That's true, for the most part, but at the same time, some pirates were bloodthirsty murderers who killed everyone. If the pirate in question raised something like a black and white skull and crossbones, for example, they just intended to loot what they could, but not harm anyone, if possible. If, however, the pirate in question, raised a black flag with red on it, that was to show, they did intend to spill blood, and kill anyone who got in their way. In most cases, pirates simply wanted to relieve other ships of their valuables, with as little bloodshed as possible, but there were some sadistic pirates who enjoyed the violence too. Then you have the British vs the Spanish and French, the Catholics vs Protestant, aspects too. Some situations are more volatile than others.
It is possible that Jean Lafite and his crew may have fought the largest pirate land battle at the Battle of New Orleans. He had his own crew plus the militia of New Orleans denizens were most probably also smugglers, pirates and various riff raff. Unfortunately his final battle at Galveston Bay against the US Federal government was reported to be epic, though not well documented, and his death was a mystery.
Thank you so much for igniting an interest in pirates that I didn’t even know I had! I had just finished black sails and had an itch for more things about pirates so I googled “best TH-cam pirates history channels” and I’m very happy that yours ended up being the first recommendation! I would like to know how you became so knowledgeable and where I can look to do more of my own research?!
You forgot the best pirate the world has ever seen!! Ok so it was four decades after the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, he’s still the best: th-cam.com/video/B4GKrzh1woQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1NbxbUjH2HDlwV5Y
Beautiful work friend. What would you say to cooperate with a great history channel named Epic History to depict your pirate battles at land and sea. I'd LOVE if that could happen. Well done 👍👌😉.
Eeeyyyy! Nice to hear the cannon intro again!
Holy shit thank you for never using AI slop images on your videos.
I’m excited to see a land engagement video❤
I'm something of a guitard myself
Likewise, I attempt to learn the instrument in high school, after two years I was still rubbish. So I am most certainly a solid Guitard.
Same, I’ve only focused on playing cover songs and not bothering with music theory
True, my friends always call me acoustic
@@cr0sad3r70 XD
You look guitarded
"Ok...I GUESS if you guys want me to??"
That had me rolling 🤣
This is making me want to play Sid Meier's Pirates!

Follow up & land battles
@8:20
To be fair. Inflicting casualties is rarely the end goal of combat. Achieving a goal with minimal losses is.
Super cool video! Here before this is one of your top 5.

28:40 "the richest heist in all of history" someone needs to do some reading on private central banking...
Great videi
nice stories but how could muskets shoot away a mast?
These would be better pirate movies than the recycled tropes and redundant "Retelling" of the past eighteen years.
Jack Sparrow has really dragged down the quality of pirate films
God I love this accent!
