Good "hack" on this jump box! I came across your video before opening up mine... it was stored a bit too long and was stone dead. Plugging in the charger port (on back) didn't do anything so I assumed the charging circuit had failed. I pulled it apart, the circuit board looked OK but the battery was completely discharged. I pulled the battery out and put it on a trickle charger as you recommended and the battery actually did charge up! I let it charge for two days and then reinstalled it and the pack sprung to life! The charging indicators work and it's charging now. Apparently the charging circuit won't activate if the battery is completely discharged. We'll see how much stamina the battery has after a discharge but I'll get some use out of it now! Thanks!
Also a common problem with these is that the rear prongs detach from the circuit internally so plugging it in won't charge (since it's not connected). That's my issue currently, the retractable prongs are broken off and floating freely
Dude, that's my problem, too, but because I was a moron who let that plug stick-out probably the entire time I had it--instead of pushing it in keeping it safe and closed: There is a reason for that and it's an important one as that plug isn't nearly as strong as I thought it was: Naturally, of course, I finally banged it on something carrying it around--it got weird after that, then collapsed altogether--Harbor Freight should change their name to Chinese Freight--I took it apart: There is another TH-cam video of a guy whose plug also broke (through apparent normal wear and tear--he also claims he paid $150 having little idea he apparently got two chargers for the price of one--except he only got one). He fixed his plug on TH-cam somewhere that I saw yesterday--inside all that is essentially somewhat of a simple DC charger--that essentially holds that plug in. But you can't open that and even if you could, replacing the plug would be probably impossible--it's cased, so would have to be broken open. Below appears to be my similar comment--inside all that is an adapter you might use for a portable electric piano--a hidden flyer from the Chinese Communist Party would have been nice but I'm afraid all I found is all the excitement you're going to find too, if you take it apart.
Good video. I tried this and the first time the battery tender indicated dead cell of bad battery. So I tried a car charge it told me that it was at full charge. I left it on a little longer and it then indicated 50% charged. So I left it on for 5 hours 12 volt 2 amp charge it now completely charged. So thanks for the video.
Mine is now lighting up the yellow light a couple days after recharging. I hit the Test button, and get the yellow light, saying it's lost charge. Obviously i should just test for voltage at that point, so prolly my next step. It's seen some cold days, maybe the battery is sulfated. I like your fix, surprised you started that engine since that's not a strong connection just thru the clamps. What i am wondering about is swapping out the lead battery for the same size Lithium one 🤔. That would be gigantically more capacity, much lighter weight and it wouldn't care if you let it go dead. Seems like it would be quite the sleeper for a jump pack.. Thoughts??
Internal battery on ours is 12v/18Amps. So, given 50% DOD without messing it up, we could replace this with a Lithium Battery, or just salvage the parts for post WW3 days...
These don't last very long they stop charging after a couple of times after use, I have tried 4 of these the 4N1 the one with air compressor they are defective! Get a JNC 770r I have had mine for over a year now and it still works as good as new. I got 3 of these at first for gifts for my son, daughter, and wife cars they all failed within a few months the charging circuit is the problem you can charge them with a 2 amp battery charger but just to much for me I would recommend a different one for sure. They also failed after replacement the first time so we moved on to JNC 660's and JNC 770r's. They also make one with air compressor.
I have the 4 in 1 version of this. Ive had it a couple years. It seems to still be charging through the plug in the back since it indicates it does and the air pump still works. I use the air pump all the time. It just wont jump a car. Idk if its a circuit problem or if the battery wont put enough amps to jump but enough for everything else to work
Right, thats my experience. I think the lithium ones are probably better and when mine brakes down, I'll probably toss it and buy one of the lithium ion ones.

Everything works on it except the last couple times i had to jump a car it wouldnt jump. The power pack battery chargers when its plugged into the wall, the pump, lights, n everything else work, it just wont jump a car.
I have one and had some one force a cord that didn't come with it and broke the plug in now its loose and floppy and I can't get it to charge,it was charging with a extention core but couldn't get a good charge any help would be appreciated on how to fix that loose plug in on jump box
Lead acid batteries have to be maintained at 80% plus capacity at all times or they start to sulfate and will no longer hold a charge this unit is something that has to be charged at least once a week and all accessories completely turned off or it will go bad quickly
I had to keep mine charged constantly the entire time I had it; one day I was at The Budget Inn--I wasn't doing heroin or smacking my bitch up--all of a sudden an alarm went off: It was the charger! If I had been away, management would have lost it--they threw concrete and other debris at Clarence Quick--it's how business is done there (Quick is one of those people every city has, and if they don't, government gets one from outer space, gets 'em hooked on something, letting them loose on the public). I found my battery pack convenient for jumping other people and naturally only really used it twice myself; now that it's gone, I'm slightly terrified I'll be stuck with a dead battery someday--which was the reason I bought it--I got sick of dead batteries. It's still kind of neat, though, especially if you're at a dump, doing nothing but looking at your battery charger, thinking of other people who will never have it so good because they don't have one.
I have a similar Cen-Tech power pack and the air compressor feature stopped shooting out air through the air hose. The unit charges normally and the air compressor kicks on when flipping the switch but no air circulates out the air hose nor does the needle gauge move when connected to an inflation tire stem. By any chance would you happen to have any suggestions of what could be causing the issue? Thanks for sharing.
I have no idea. I’m guessing either something broke in the compressor or it’s just not producing enough pressure with the piston. Hopefully it’s within the 90 days and you can do a warranty return?
@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects These compressors work well until the hose gets hot and rupture you can take it apart and cut a small piece of the hose off and reinstall it it should work again until you get it to hot and the hose blows out.

Tow truck driver has a real strong little tiny one that he can jump six cars on it. But these chargers have to be completely charged before you try to jump start a car otherwise you ruin it
I have the same one. When it's time for it to do the job ot failed. I charged it for 24 hours it's not joy. I tried to exchanged from harbor freight but since I have the receipt and 90 days past there's nothing they can do. I tell you I just lost my confidence in buying at Harbor Freight. Now I am left with a junk that cost me money for nothing additional junk in the landfills 😡
I'm scared to open mines, because it beeps a lot. Red light is on. I'm scared to charge it, due to water damage. My mom placed it where it got wet. What do I do because there is a lot of noise to it.
They really aren't the longest lasting chargers. I think the newer ones with the lithium batteries are much better options. I'd hook a trickle charger up to the battery directly. Thanks for watching.
If there's no circuitry issues, you can get a better battery. Like an interstate. They are pretty much motorcycle batteries. Just make sure its the same dimensions.
It seems like I did that just to show it "wasn't possible" to start it, and that when I did start it with just the jump pack entirely on it's own, that it was entirely the power pack starting the car. I had to watch back through it. Just looks stupid to me now. So I edited it out. Nice catch.
Get a new battery for it if using a car battery charger or tender doesn't work. Pretty much the same battery as motorcycle or lawnmowers n such. Just measure it n get what the same dimensions
Your title is misleading. You didn't repair it. You modified it to a sub par working condition. You're title should be more accurately called, "How to Modify a broken Jump start power pack to working condition" Since most tinkerer's, such as myself, are the ones searching for the info on how to actually fix it to full working condition, sorry to say your video was a bit disappointing. What you did I could have figured out on my own as a last resort. Want I want to do it fix my broken jump starter. I'll give you credit for pointing out the board issue. My guess is that component is probably the common culprit in most cases.
I think mine last five to six years and I didn't open the box for about a year--having one really did a number on my status--how I appear to other people is very important but now that I don't have a battery charger, will I still have friends..?
