      @@anthonykearney608 Was the Republic ever really the "good guys"? The separatists had some pretty legit complaints about corruption in the Republic. Also, the Republic outright refused to aid in defending Naboo, but pulled an army out of nowhere the second some people (peacefully at first) tried to leave the Republic. All Sith lord manipulation, sure, but they were still making the best choice for themselves when the republic had to flip out and drag everybody back in at gunpoint.

    • @evanceier8577
      @evanceier8577 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@scoreboredgaming see, the problem with the separatists (other than the casual use of human shields, WMDs, etc.) Is that they're run by a sith lord. Beyond that they DO have a very legitimate grievance, but ill go for the guys who go out of their way to save people than the ones who put those civilians in danger.

    • @scoreboredgaming
      @scoreboredgaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@evanceier8577 The Republic is also run by a Sith lord. And their bulk of their armed forces during the war were slaves. And importantly, their conduct during the war doesn't justify the Republic starting the war. The Separatists didn't secede for the sake of committing war crimes and using human shields, they left because the Republic kinda sucks and they tought they could do better. They may have been wrong in hindsight, but they had every right to set up their own government.

    It's ironic that in the Malevolence arc, a story that is clearly modeled on the hunt for the Bismarck, the BTL-B plays the role of the obsolete Fairy Swordfish Torpedo Bomber.

    • @MrBandholm
      @MrBandholm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      It is actually even more interesting to consider, that the Fairy Swordfish wasn't an obsolete aircraft, but a modern naval torpedobomber at the time.
      Just consider that it was the only aircraft that started the war in active frontline service and ended the war in active frontline service, and that it accounted for more enemy tonnage than any other airplane in history.
      That is why the BTL-B is such a good fit.

      Update: It was obsolete by 1939, being a canvas biplane. That served it well against the Bismarck as her AA guns had been calibrated to faster planes. But it DID account for more tonnage than any other plane in service, and outlived several models designed to replace it?! This thing was the plane that wouldn't die!

    The Y-Wing is proof that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. They keep trying to make better, newer bombers and they keep failing. The Resistance bombers, the K-Wing, the B-Wing is more anti-capital ship than bomber, they actually made the Y-Wing look cooler by making it older with the Clone Wars variant. You don't mess with perfection.

    • @isaac3702

    • @HrothgarHeavenlight
      @HrothgarHeavenlight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Well B-wing is superior choice for assault fighter / bomber. Especially B-Wing E. K-Wing was much better bomber but it was much more costly , where B-wing cost only 1/3 more, K-wing was almost double cost of Y-wing.

    • @Barrobroadcastmaster
      @Barrobroadcastmaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@HrothgarHeavenlight The B-Wing is a giant, flying cross. It cannot bomb. It's an attack platform but not something you'd use to attack any ground-based installation, period. Its gigantic profile also make it the worse choice as a fighter.
      Honestly, it was the writers' choice in the EU to make the B-Wing a "replacement" Y-Wing and it's very fitting that it pretty much never did. Book after book, the Y-Wing is still in use and it's excuse after excuse with the B-Wing's development. The very form the B-Wing has is flawed and unsuitable for use as anything but a giant, flying torpedo platform.
      I'm sorry but my original statement stands. The B-Wing just doesn't do it as a bomber. Great for sending out in waves to take out capital ships, if you escort them heavily but not as good at their job as a squadron of Y-Wings. I'll take Aggressor Wing any day.

    These things were supposedly obsolete when I served in the Imperial Navy (from about the Hoth Campaign to just before the Battle of Endor), but I must say that the Rebel Alliance and other terrorists used them to excellent effect. They make superb long-range raiders. Though they're easy enough to kill even in a baseline TIE Fighter, the time to kill is quite annoyingly long. If deployed in large enough numbers (especially with a good fighter escort of X- or A-Wings to keep us busy), these damn Y-Wings could do massive damage to installations, capital ships, and especially freighters with proton torpedo or heavy rocket strikes.
    So in short, I must give them due respect even as I want them all to DIE DIE I HATE YOU DIE DIE DIE!!! Ahem. Yes. Respect. Long live the Emperor.

    I like the this original BTL configuration best. All the B.S. about how stripping the armor of made it faster is total Bunk. It's a space craft, in space weight is not as critical as is power out put. Once a ship is in motion it will stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force. Basic Newtonian law of motion. The only time aerodynamic drag/weight/thrust would be of any concern is in atmosphere. Something the BTL only does as a planet side Ground Attacker, to which you want as much armor/shielding you can carry. Like an A-10 compared to an F-35.
    Star Wars like most other space based shows has people believing that "Plane in Scape" physic's is real. The one show that does the physic's right is "The Expanse".

    To be honest, I didn't like this choice. I feel like they gave a Y-wing variation to the Republic just to use a more familiar ship design that the Rebels would eventually use. I get that they didn't fit with the Tarkin Doctorine of the Empire. But the idea that the Empire had such a successful fighter and melted them down into scrap, instead of just phasing them out slowly like other ships is just weird. We know the Empire kept using V-Wings and Arc 170s for a few years at least. That they didn't continue using the Y-Wing makes little sense.
    I think it would have made much more sense had the ship remained in service until its manufacturer was discovered to have Rebel sympathies, then the remaining ships would be destroyed to avoid them falling into Rebel hands.

      Well the role of bomber wasn't a priority even by the time the clone wars ended, the victory class were meant to usher in a new era of heavily armed warships that had raw firepower to replace what the y wings did. Arcs were able to dogfight and v wings were interceptors, and that's all the empire really wanted. It's why tie bombers were given so little design thought

    • @heavyarms55
      @heavyarms55 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anthonyhartman411 Yes but remember we're talking about a fighter that was a mainstay of their existing military forces. They had to number in the thousands, if not tens of thousands across their territory. Simply scrapping overnight would be huge totally unneeded waste of resources. I could see them not buying more of them as they shifted to the TIE bomber line. But just scrapping them immediately makes no sense.

    I gotta know, have you ever played Starsector? It does a great job at showcasing fleet warfare and infrastructure in space.
    And it also shows that a fighter is nothing compared to a capital warship.

    • @dogbone4665
      @dogbone4665 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boobah5643 all those are accounted for (except maybe stealth and hacking), since the fighters are highly maneuverable and small (roughly the size they'd be in starwars).
      As for the payload, theres fighters that carry nukes that can oneshot half of the smaller ships in the game and cripple the larger ones, though a solo bomber isn't getting anywhere without either protection or a squad of other fighters. And if it has more armor at the cost of maneuverability, it definitely won't be coming back without help.

    It always mystifies me that no-one in Star Wars lore (in terms of the Rebellion) seems to think along the lines of 'we have these slow but well armed bombers that are very vulnerable to modern fighters and these interceptors that are not very well armed or sturdy - why not fit the engines of the interceptors onto the B-Wings so we have speed, durability and weapons'

    • @sirboomsalot4902
      @sirboomsalot4902 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because B-Wings are massive and heavy, and Interceptors are comparatively light. I’m willing to bet the engines in the B-Wing are way more powerful than the ions on the interceptors

    My opinion on the Y-wing has done a complete 180 over the years. At first I didn't like it because of it's age, it's slow pace and the existence of the B-wing. Now I love the Y-wing because of it's simplicity, efficiency and effectiveness at it's role; it's doesn't need to be flashy or superpowered to get the job done.
    It's a close battle between this and the more famous BTL-A4 but I say the BTL-B just edges ahead in my preference, mostly due to the extra gunner.

      It kind of has an interesting backstory. A guidebook described the Y-Wings in Rebel hands as all having been originally armored, but maintenance crews were tired of stripping all the armor to get where they needed to go, so pilots agreed to just leave the armor off to increase availability rates. The people making the Clone Wars show like the idea of an older armored variant, so they took the armored look, increased the armor even more and came to the conclusion that that is what its predecessor would have looked like.

      I love the Rebel Y-Wing largely thanks to it's iconic barebones look. The exposed internals and the fragile appearance of the engines reminds me of World War 1 era bi-planes. More especifically the Swordfish torpedo bomber, a bi-plane that was already outdated by the time it fought in World War 2 which is now dominated by all-metal fully armored monoplanes that are much faster and deadlier, but it was such an effective and reliable design that it ended up staying in-service far longer than expected, dealt a lot more damage than more modern torpedo bombers and proved to be an amazing aircraft despite all it's drawbacks. Just like the Rebel Y-Wings, outdated but is still more than capable of kicking ass. And let's be real folks, it's not often we get barebones spacecraft designs in sci-fi. In a genre dominated by extremely sleek and futuristic looking space crafts the old, beat-up, barely functional look of the Y-Wing sure makes it a lot more unique.

    I know it's classified as a bomber, but to me it's more like a ground attack craft similar to an A-10 since it can dog fight as seen in Return of the Jedi and in videogames. Also, this is my favorite Star Wars "fighter".
