    Great use of material that you have. The best designs always reuse material on-hand to come up with an item that performs as needed. Attention to detail in the process is the attribute that makes the craftsman.

      It really is. He did an amazing job with it and aside from using better "spring steel" wire to make the springs, everything is really tip-top on this project. I'm truly amazed.

    I remember back in the 60s taking my mother's mouth organ apart. The reeds were all individual like mini concertina or accordion reeds. Now they seem to be just on a plate. I wonder why they changed.

  • @bveracka
    @bveracka 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This truly is a huge accomplishment. I tried making one myself some years back, but I put the project on the back burner for several reasons - primarily to learn to make or buy some better reeds, and because I play accordion I've considered making a one-row cajun accordion instead.
    Anyways…
    The _ONLY_ thing I'd do differently (and what I did myself) is to buy some good steel wire like "spring steel" or strong steel wire - not heavier gauge, just stronger stuff - to make the springs. This will ensure the springs last for a long time, and rebound with the best action possible. Softer steel in paper clips will likely wear out over time, but I guess you'll find out.
    Other than that very small quibble, this is an _amazing_ build, and you did a really great job with this. It's easily one of the most impressive TH-cam project videos I've seen in _years_ - and that's really saying something coming from a guy who watches so many.
    Give yourself a pat on the back!

      Thanks for your kind words and I'm glad you got a lot from the video; it's a big reason I make these. This first concertina was built fairly roughly and I've learned a lot since then. My more recent concertina I built reflects this and I improved many things such as using phosphor-bronze wire for the springs. Surprisingly, the paper clip springs have held up relatively well even after all this time though. I may make an improved 30 button anglo build video in the future.

      Thanks for your interest, but unfortunately I don't have much in the way of documentation for this particular instrument. There is a lot of information about concertinas here, though: www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?/forum/7-instrument-construction-amp-repair/

    That looks amazing! I want to make one but reeds look expensive. How much did you pay for yours?

    • @cas_creations
      @cas_creations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks! There was little to no expense involved in this concertina, as many of the parts were made from household materials (i.e., heat sink aluminum from old computers, random scrap metal, paperclips for springs), and the reeds came from an old accordion I had around, so the price really depends on the amount of scrap you have lying around. On my second concertina, I salvaged reeds from a broken accordion found on eBay (which is my recommendation for sourcing reeds given you have some reed-working abilities, as buying reeds by themselves is often more expensive), so the bulk of the expense there was from that.

    Another excellent vid, thanks again. I was wondering, the aluminium axle/stud, how are they holding out? Is there any way to make rivets from steel nails?

    • @cas_creations
      @cas_creations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you like it! I haven't had any problems with the aluminium rivets a year+ later (this concertina was built in the summer of 2019), though it is true that traditionally harder metal such as brass is used (though brass is still a relatively soft metal). What's nice about aluminum is that it is easy to shape with a hammer, so square-profile aluminium from something like a heat sink can easily be formed into a round hole and it will very effectively clamp the lever to the post. I expect that steel nails could work too, such as finishing nails, but as it is harder to shape than aluminium, it would be important to create a hole that fits very tightly around the nail to eliminate wobble.

    Awesome video! How did you make the reeds?

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That was my number-one question. I've had a go at making my own (see my comment), and part of the reason why I put it on the back burner was because of the reeds. I just couldn't get the sound I wanted; I can tune free reeds with some level of proficiency - I wouldn't have a go at a big chromatic accordion but I can do harmonica and cajun accordion reeds - but actually _making_ reeds from scratch is a whole other mountain I've yet to climb. Even if he bought them, the result of his project is truly amazing. I've never seen anyone make an accordion or concertina in their home shop like this. It makes me want to have another go at mine.

    I'm heavily considering making one. Any suggestions on where to find the reeds?

    • @cas_creations
      @cas_creations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I got mine from an old broken accordion. Try to find one with aluminum reeds (usually newer accordions), as some of the really old models have zinc reeds which add to the weight of the concertina considerably.

      The instrument you have made is pretty good, great work 🤝

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Oleg7212K It's not _really_ hard to make the box, buttons, etc. so you can easily copy whatever design you like best and just build it based on pictures - that's not the hardest part. The real difficulty comes with getting the action just right (when you press a button, you need it to work), and also making your own reeds and tuning them properly. Having plans wouldn't help you with either of these things. I hope that helps to motivate you to try it. I've gotten about 75% of the way with mine, and this guy's shown it can definitely be done! There's just not a lot of info about how to do it online; you have to really dig for it.

      @@Oleg7212K Awesome! I hope you complete your project eventually. It's _so cool_ to know that people are building their own concertinas, since the Chinese-made ones are terrible. Also, when it's finished, you'll know how to repair or modify it since you built it and know every part of its inner workings.
      I've dreamed of making my own 1-row / 10-button diatonic accordion, which is a similar project with very similar construction.
      TLDR:
      _Mega-_ kudos to you for starting! Upload a video when you start making the other parts and show it off! 👏
