Best of jazz guitar videos at www.veojam.com/jazz_blues Jazz guitarist/vocalist and band leader, John Pizzarelli plays and sings Route 66 at the Leverkusener Jazztage, Leverkusen/Germany, October 1995.
Written by Bobby Troup who starred in the 70s TV show EMERGENCY! along with his wife Julie London. Julie was a great singer of Jazz and Pop Standards. This trio is fantastic and I love the chordal emphasis of many of Pizzarelli’s solos. This soloing is very creative on this song... His choices are always outside the box while keeping well inside the Jazz tradition.
When God dished out the talent, he was certainly generous to the Pizzarelli family! However, they have all worked tooth and nail to develop God’s gifts. I was blessed with the music gene, but never had enough ambition to pursue it, as I should have. I’m 72 and regret that I didn’t pursue music as a career. Instead, I’m a secretary. But John’s music thrills me and makes me so happy! Thank you so much, Pizzarelli family!
John is one of my alltime favourites Met him once personally in the early nineties, playing in a very small pub for about 30 (!) people in the city of Maastricht, the Netherlands. Great human and fine artist !
I've seen these guys over a dozen times in NY, Philly, San Francisco and other locales and they are truly great musicians. Their shows are never the same and they can play any type of music. Note, that the great Ray Kennedy did pass away last year, but the group has continued with Larry Fuller on piano.
Doesn't get any better. I wonder what some young folk miss these days !. Never being "put in the way of this Music" . Now Rappers ,"Do Gigs" I Despair ! .
This guy's brilliant -- love the rhythm guitar while he's singing. That singing in unison with his playing is amazing... that's very hard to do. Great piano player... fantastic.
Hey Bryan. You start with the signing, really. The improv starts in your head and your learn to sing it. You then try to find what you sing on your fretboard. You begin simply and take it from there. It takes time, but it’s doable. I find it easier to sing improv than playing it, in a sense. Which kinda proves my point.
Thak You Great Master John Pizzarelli!!!. Thanks for All!!. Your Taste when You Sing an Play Guitar!!. Se nota que hay, amen de un Talento Natural, Muchos años de Estudio. Happy 2013!. (Hector Julio Sanchez Inda from Berazategui, Buenos Aires, Argentina).
I'd really like to be in a party w/his perfomance there, everybody in a very well fare, everybody smiling and happy, Gee this music makes me fly ... so, let us fly uhuhuhu
His voice, along with George Benson's, is so close to Nat King Cole's. An ethnic Italian with a fine singing voice. His scatting is reaching for George's throat, artistically speaking.
regarding scat singing while he solos...... I understand your question but you need to listen to more guitar jazz. It's part of the style. He's a bit louder than most but I dig it.
Ray Kennedy is one of the best jazz pianists of his time, yet can no longer play since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. A fundraiser has been created to pay Ray's medical bills which are not covered by health insurance. Here's the link to donate to this gifted musician who has given so much beautiful music to the world: www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/support-ray-kennedy-and-his-family/93579
Ray wasn't a monster pianist. He was 'The' monster pianist. The best piano player I've heard in my lifetime. And I heard them all great ones like Peterson, Tatum, Billy Taylor,.. and I'm not taking anything away from those monster pianists but Ray Kennedy was 'The' monster one.
I sure miss Bucky, however glad to see John keep the standards alive. Maybe John can do an album of standards called, "We sure miss Bucky." (I don't care for scat singing by the way).

They are working so hard but having so much fun! Wish I were there. Nothing better! Feel very privileged to watch and listen. They’re the best!
My favorite guitar player! Hugely underestimated!
Any smart and sensitive musician surrounds themselves with amazing collaborative artists!
Had no idea he could scat! He is always great to hear. Been described as a speed demon on the guitar and that is accurate. Thanks for post.
John and Ray enjoyed each other so much!
Doesn't get any better. I wonder what some young folk miss these days !. Never being "put in the way of this Music" . Now Rappers ,"Do Gigs" I Despair ! .

The scat singing in unison with his guitar is my favorite part of John Pizzarelli's style. How does he do that?? Awesome piano in this song too!

Really great!!!!!!!
Listening this in 2017
The solo reminds me the Andreas Oberg's improvisation on "Billie's bounce" in 2008 (some cool licks are very similar). Good music!

Man, Ray Kennedy is THE pianist!!! :)
@tzuiop His guitar is made by Moll Custom Instruments out of Springfield, Missouri.
Bill Moll makes his current custom model instrument--the one seen in this video is a Benedetto, which preceded it.
There's hope for American music yet,
Hail John Pizarelli !
Swings with style..
What was that 2:48 think? I recognise it so well... I've been singing on that lick, and a bit more, for almost 10 years..!
omg
A giant!
Nice 謝謝 谢谢 maddsi
I agree... a 7 string Benedetto.
His voice, along with George Benson's, is so close to Nat King Cole's. An ethnic Italian with a fine singing voice. His scatting is reaching for George's throat, artistically speaking.
JP is a cool cat indeed!
I love the lick @ 2:45-47
If he recorded the phone book I'd buy it
i saw bags groove there
@mychristmas100 I think it is a Benedetto.
regarding scat singing while he solos...... I understand your question but you need to listen to more guitar jazz. It's part of the style. He's a bit louder than most but I dig it.
Wonder who that pianist is, wow!
