      One is never too old to love jazz and the Pizzarellis. Met them once in Madison, NJ. I can't believe NJ politicians won't endorse "I Like Jersey Best" as our state song.

    many years ago .. i mean 18 to be exact, i went to a pizarelli concert at a park in north jersey (FORGET THE NAME OF THE PARK!!!).. brilliant concert (and free :-)). I managed to chat with him.. NICEST GUY on the planet. Had to ask him who his favorite guitarist was and he said "joe pass" without batting an eyelid.

      I lost track of which keys they were in, especially with Pizzarelli's chord solo.

    That Joe Pass lick at 3:53 is originally from the song moanin` by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers if i remember correctly.

      (6 years late)
      I always thought of that as an old bop lick, I can't think of the origin but I've heard it on lots of different instruments possibly starting around the 40s, but that could be the first time it was used that specific way, which would have been 1958 (released 1959). To keep my mind off of death, I feel like breaking it down :) I like that you pointed it out.
      In any scale
      1, 4-b3-3, 6-4-5, 9-7-8
      In the key of C
      C, FEbE, AEG, DBC
      **if my ear is correct**
      (More ranting)
      I couldn't find that lick in Moanin', at least in the studio version off of that album, with that famous Lee Morgan trumpet solo. Maybe we're talking about two different things.

    Cigarette holder which wigs me
    over her shoulder, she digs me.
    Out cattin' that satin doll.
    Baby, shall we go out skippin?
    Careful, amigo, you're flippin',
    speaks Latin that satin doll.
    She's nobody's fool so I'm playing it cool as can be.
    I'll give it a whirl but I ain't for no girl catching me,
    swich-e-rooney.
    Telephone numbers well you know,
    doing my rhumbas with uno
    and that'n my satin doll.

    Not sure why I clicked on this, I have an aversion to this standard, at the conclusion of my first jazz guitar lesson many years ago, my teacher circled this song in the index of the Real Book for homework and told me to have it learned by the next week, I did learn it with great difficulty and with many alternate voicings too, but I've never liked the song that much since then. Apparently Mr. Pizzarelli had no such aversion and that is why I'm sitting here at home watching him perform instead of the other way around.

    Truthfully, he's not much of a singer. He's functional, but that's it. He's a much better guitar player even though there were parts in this one I didn't much care for compared to other performances of his that I have watched. I don't know him personally nor have I ever met, but he is a fairly good showman on stage.

    • @darkoanton5
      @darkoanton5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Forget about being perfect. Do you think Pizzarelli's voice better than Sinatra's?
      I'll stick with my opinion that Pizzarelli has a functional voice. As for Sinatra, his voice is much better than functional.

    • @darkoanton5
      @darkoanton5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** On what way do you think that Pizzarelli is an original? He plays an old style of jazz. There's not much originality in that. But he is a heck of a guitarist even if he is not an original. He's also a heck of an entertainer.

    • @VANEPS7
      @VANEPS7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I hear his voice in the same vane as some other "cool" singers like Chet Baker and Bobby Troupe and is perfect for his type of music. As far as his guitar playing being better than his voice that is probably true of his guitar artistry and most singers voices since he is a wizard with the guitar. You know he does have it in his genes what with his father being the great Bucky Pizzarelli. His leads are fantastic and his rhythm playing is second to none. But then everyone is a critic and few of those complaining including myself are good enough to hold this dude's pick.

      I've met John, Bucky, and Martin a few times when they have played at Jazz Alley. All masters of their craft (Bucky is without peer). All gracious, friendly guys. As was said "a national treasure" all three.'
