    New comment on an old video: As someone who used to work in the paper industry, the reason why paper works better than cloth for applying oil is because the paper was treated with wetting agents during production. The wetting agents work to attract water and subsequently they repell oil. So the oil tends to sit on the papers surface rather than being absorbed like on a cloth. It ends up taking less oil because more is transferred to the wood versus being absorbed into the applicator

    Hi Ben. Just wanted to say that I think you are a true master craftsman and that I have enjoyed all of the videos in this series immensely. You really are an inspiration. That guitar is a work of art.

    That smile right at the end, "There you have it."
    You can see on your face your in love with that guitar, and rightfully so. Recently found your page and started watching the whole build from video 1. Amazing work. I spent time as a woodworker and can appreciate the detail and instruction you put into your videos.
    Thanks for posting your passion. Keep up the artistry.

    I have actually found a good method of getting deep oil penetration is to use 800 grit sandpaper with the oil. Lightly wet sand the oil into the grains. The wet sanding with oil creates micro wood dust with the oil which settles deep into the grains. It makes an absolutely pristine finish with oil.

      Do you use the sandpaper on First or last coat?

    This is very helpful. I bought a mahogany Jazzmaster guitar kit and finally decided to do finish it with teak oil (I don't want a very glossy finish). Looking forward to getting into it today!

    Would several coats of danish oil work well on mahogany if then finished with wipe on poly?

    Ben I must admit, I never really understood why this guitar was so special, I though it was rather bland and kinda boring. Yep those were my thoughts, until I saw that gorgeous flamed body against the light oh my god how could I have been so blind? I swear I can´t understand how could I have not noticed before, after watching all 54 episodes. My respects Ben, you really mean a lot to me, your videos, work and passion are what made me get into luthiery. Cheers

    I'm loving the Danish and Teak oil look... Might be the way I go with my Tele...

    Does an oil finish impart any unique sound qualities to an instrument? We hear a lot about nitrocellulose lacquer, but what about the oils or oil/varnishes?Beautiful guitar.

    • @patbassman8251
      @patbassman8251 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only reason Nitrocellulose is considered better for tone is because it fakes off and crack so its like having bare wood , its not durable at all , a light amount of an oil finish lets the wood breath so probably contributes to the tone .

    Nice video!
    I have a couple of questions?
    I am planning on a finishing an basswood body with a quilt maple top.
    You say first layer is lemon oil.
    Could you use the Dunlop lemon 65 (fretboard) oil for that as well?
    And why the Teak oil, will it at a darker color?
    Thanks!

      These days we use www.crimsonguitars.com/products/penetrating-guitar-finishing-oil first followed by the thicker version.. I wouldn't know about the dunlop oil, there are often wierd things in there that I don't know about. Teak oil, in fact all oils.. will darken the wood a bit.. B

    @someweirdguy101 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ben, I notice you apply the oil across the grain rather than with the grain as I've always been taught. Is there a reason you choose to go across rather than with?

    which brand of Danish did you use? i caught Rustin's on the Teak, is the Danish Rustin's also? it seemed like the better option from my hardware shop but there was several other brands.

    Next time, after the final coat, but before the wax, try a little nose oil.

    Probably a dumb question but what happens if it cures before you wipe it off at the tacky stage?

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then add more oil, it will start dissolving the earlier layer and you can go from therez as long as you get it early enough.. once it has had a few days to cure you will need to sand down with fune wet and dry sandpaper mixed with fresh oil.. B

      +Luca Digioia Crimson Guitar finishing oil is fairly recent. The last year or so. As far as I understand this video is several years old. I don't know exactly how much older, but I believe this is still Ben's garage workshop, at his house.

      +Nathan Holden As their business grows I do wonder if CCG wil keep using oil finishes. Doing a whole guitar & doing it right seems rather labour intensive.
      Off topic, I used Tru-Oil on the back of the neck of my Les Paul. Great product.

    why do you do the wipe down step?

    • @insederec
      @insederec 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could be wrong but I was told when you put on oil you are layering it. If you don't wipe it the top layer will dry over and you can't get the oil to penetrate.
